How schools are reacting to Apple’s entry into education by steschin apple

[–]zzcm 2 points3 points ago

i think people are forgetting one thing, the original ipad can be had for 300, and when apple announces the next version, all the current versions will drop in price. long term, ipads will become cheaper and cheaper so the cost will be less and less of a factor.

401(k) - what is the ideal amount to contribute based on employer contributions? by not_gulliblein personalfinance

[–]zzcm 5 points6 points ago

means the first 3% is at 100%, and the next 2% is at 50% up to 5% total so essentially you need at least 7% to get the full match (3% * 1 ) + (4% * 0.5) = 3% + 2% = 5%

How much should I put aside each month for a down payment? by Nideasin personalfinance

[–]zzcm 15 points16 points ago

why complicate this? just do 15k -1k = 14k/(4 * 12) =~ $292/month. that should be your target. if you reach your target earlier, then all the better.

pro tip, the sword (and some other obvious items) act as your reach so if you swing your sword and hit the heart, you actually grab it

Pay off 50k in student loans, or put large chunks of cash toward first child's education (incoming in March)? by bo_knowsin personalfinance

[–]zzcm 1 point2 points ago

student loans first. when you apply for loans later, you get less if you already have money saved. besides worst case scenario, your child pays for their own education (really not the end of the world and is a lesson in picking the right college/major).

Is it a wise for me to buy an apartment? by Winnafailurein personalfinance

[–]zzcm 0 points1 point ago

personally, i think if you can get an apartment around 100-125 making 36k/y with 20% down (or more), you should be fine. the base loan will be just under 500/month (4.2% for 30yrs). depending on how much maintenance/hoa it should be comparable to renting (not sure your neighborhood/average rent is) and you get to resell. even if the price drop, at 100k your lost percentage wise isnt going to be a lot relatively.

Should I cancel my old credit cards? And how? by NPPraxisin personalfinance

[–]zzcm 0 points1 point ago

i would keep around 3 and slowly (maybe once every 6month cancel 1). yes it doesnt hurt, but you are also carrying a lot of unused credit that could potentially be a liable if they think you might max everything at once and run away.

With a credit score greater then 825, why did I get turned down for an auto loan? by ytruhgin personalfinance

[–]zzcm 4 points5 points ago

what do you mean you have a balance of $12k that is not due yet? outstanding credit balance is usually done monthly on credit reports, not real time so that makes me think you have that 12k balance for a while. that's probably why you are rejected. too much outstanding debt.

My college loans are being deferred, but I can afford to keep paying them. Should I? by wolfskipfoxtrotin personalfinance

[–]zzcm 2 points3 points ago

keep paying. think of it as earning 6.8% * 1/3 + 3.75 *2/3 investment since that's what you're not losing in interest.

An awfully specific question about Mint.com (pic inside) by science_man_29in personalfinance

[–]zzcm 0 points1 point ago

i had a similar issue. i eventually deleted and re-added the account. i think it happens that mint thinks the charges are pending, and when it resync didnt unflag it as pending so it got stuck like that.
