When the earth was flat, was the moon flat as well? by einargudin shittyaskscience

Then how do you explain the fact that the flag they planted did not pop the moon?

If I can't use my cell phone on an airplane, am I also not allowed to use it on a space station? by [deleted]in shittyaskscience

[–]zygoust 1 point2 points ago

Cell phone usage on space stations is widely encouraged, and in fact actively promoted by AT&T and Sprint. $22 per minute is a good incentive.

Unless someone creates a "/r/spacedicks in print" start-up we are still gonna have a problem when we run out of internet.

In the early days of internet banking (when you could still get your pin sent to your e-mail address) I went onto my best friend (and colleague's) workstation on payday.

I managed to get into his internet banking account and transferred his whole salary to me.

Then asked him if I can have a short term loan that evening and watched him trying to draw cash....

Okay sure buddy. I have been educated in Physics.

But I think you are way too theoretical. I will just paraphrase this Carl Sagan quote here: "If you wish to bake an Apple pie from scratch, you first need to invent the universe"

I like to take that as a bit of inspiration to exercise my free will.

ELI5: Why it was decided that Monday - Friday, 9:00 - 5:00 is considered a "standard work week". by pumper911in explainlikeimfive

[–]zygoust 1 point2 points ago

To answer that question you first have to ask why 09:00 to 5:00 is the standard working day.

Through evolution we became programmed to be active during daytime and rest at night. Certain countries with very hot climates, or skewed daylight hours make adjustment for this.

Monday to Friday part of the question has a lot to with the early predominance of Christianity in the Western world, which had the effect of creating a precedent around the Monday Friday routine.

Some Muslim countries such as the Arab Emirates operate on a Sunday to Thursday schedule to this day, since Friday is the holy day to be observed.

Helping women have fewer children is a cheap, fast and effective - but unpopular - climate change solution by alertnetclimatein environment

[–]zygoust 0 points1 point ago

A lot of the rural poor communities in my country have no other choice than to have many children.

This is due to a severe lack of social infrastructure such as medical aid, proper pensions, and decent long term employment.

So they NEED to have many children so they can be looked after in their old age.

8 children growing up poor can do a lot more to sustain their parents, than 2 children growing up a little less poor.
