Game Of Thrones On Track To Be Most Pirated Show Of 2012; Pirates Still Asking HBO For Legitimate Options by nomdewebin technology

[–]zmann 0 points1 point ago

Except that HBO doesn't have any of the infrastructure required to do what Netflix does and it would take a serious investment in both time, money and creative energy to get there.

Edit: Wait, did you really compare GOT downloads to Superbowl viewership?

Some people are so self-entitled. Like somewhere in the declaration of human rights there's a statement that says "the people shall have unencumbered access to all entertainment options"

Did you watch the interview and did you feel like you came away with a good comprehension of HBO's business model?

Here's what I picked up

  • When he says that the "internet-based model is a fad", he's specifically referring to the fact that 95% of households in the US own a television and that people are not sitting over their computers watching TV and there's no indication that behavior will change, regardless of the delivery model.

  • HBO is a network, and cannot instantaneously establish an infrastructure to handle things like customer payments, customer service, technical support, etc. This prevents them from currently offering a standalone model. They benefit greatly from the fact that the cable companies do all that work for them.

  • The goal with HBO Go was simply to create added value to their HBO product and extend the life of subscription cycle. They are allowing users to watch how they want and by offering every HBO show in their library. The library is a big part of it, because they've found value in older shows. He was saying that 70% of HBO GO viewing is original series, compared to 30% on TV and 44% On Demand.

  • Selling their shows to Netflix or Hulu makes no sense for their business. Although they are different business models, they are still competitors to some extent. He compared it to them selling shows to Showtime - why would they? (again, their goal is subscribers)

  • Looking at all those considerations, the cost for them to support a standalone business model would drastically increase the price of the service for those customers and they would probably not add many subscribers as a result.

So why should they offer a standalone model or change how they're doing business? Besides the fact that a lot of people who don't have HBO are bitching about it and pirating their shows (the fact that HBO runs a successful business is NOT justification for pirating shows, IMO).

I worked in the Art Department on Freakylinks and I just discovered that you guys put the entire website up on your Haxan site. That's awesome!

Did you have anything to do with the show or the site?

$8 a month? It costs like $15 WITH your cable subscription (meaning it might even be subsidized at that price).

At least they have a reason for keeping it bundled with cable.

I'm sure this has nothing to do with often how a ship full of people disembark with food poisoning, norovirus, etc.

Seriously though (and this is entirely hearsay), I've heard that disgruntled ship staff tend to spread their feces around various parts of the ship with the intent of getting people sick. A few smatterings of poo in some serving utensils, drink-ware, or that kind of thing could probably bring down a whole ship if incubation went well.

What do you think is the correct price point to watch new unlimited ad free content on any platform? Surely not $8, right?

It's $8 though. That's less than a decent meal. For a month of service. On pretty much any device you own.

Do you really think that $8 should cover unlimited episodes for a month with no other revenue source? When you can buy them on iTunes for $2-4 each, and when cable can cost $100 easily?
