New app allows you to take photos of coupons, store them within the app, redeem them at stores & search & use their database of 660,000 coupons. by coffeegrinder08in Frugal

Eh if it is an email coupon I've had pretty good luck (all the hobby places will), but if it started life in physical form... good luck.

Almost One-Fourth of US Suicide Victims Drunk at Time of Death by narrowayin science

[–]yasth 80 points81 points ago

Alcohol doesn't reduce inhibition exactly. What it really does is simplify thought processes and reduce conflating (higher order) thoughts. study(pdf)

Sorry, but the difference between alcohol myopia and dis inhibition is a subtle but important one. In this case for example it would suggest that a drunk person with suicidal ideation surrounded by life affirming things would be less likely to commit suicide.

Are the salries listed in job-seeking site before or after taxes? by syddin jobs

[–]yasth 1 point2 points ago

They are after some employer side taxes (well sometimes depending on the job), like Class 1 NIC. How in the world could they be after your taxes though? I mean they don't know you.

Anyways since you seem to not be UK based (? maybe) have a pamphlet or if I messed up try this one

Required to do a research project as part of hiring process... is this common? by courtesy-flushin jobs

[–]yasth 0 points1 point ago

Eh if you are unemployed, I'd almost say do it just to be a bit more aware of what is out there. If you are employed, and not really sold on the position, then it doesn't really sound like it is necessarily for you.

Required to do a research project as part of hiring process... is this common? by courtesy-flushin jobs

[–]yasth 0 points1 point ago

Eh if they say it isn't much they probably don't expect you to be spending a full day on it. Are you sure you aren't making a mountain out of a molehill? I, myself, have done that on technical projects.

Multiple Job offers by strategosInfinitumin jobs

[–]yasth 0 points1 point ago

Eh if you've no even been offered an interview yet for the others it probably isn't even a real concern sadly. The odds just aren't in your favor to even have that "problem".

If you are fortunate enough for it to come up though (or it comes up through other positions), then well, it would be similar except of course you'd tell them in person. Oh, and be extra apologetic.

Hello,

I'm sorry I'm going to have to cancel our interview on 9/19 for the Cat Petting position. I've found a new position as a Mouseketer. I wish you the best of luck in finding a qualified candidate,

Thanks for your interest,

BOB

With you pretty much just saying the body for phone stuff. More or less the you just tell them swiftly and cleanly.

Required to do a research project as part of hiring process... is this common? by courtesy-flushin jobs

[–]yasth 0 points1 point ago

Eh ideally the company would pick a project very similar to a problem they actually had. Otherwise you are back to the whole unrealistic test issue.

In general whatever the project is shouldn't really take more than 3 hours tops, and even that is a while.

Got a response, need insight by yourfavoritecolorin jobs

[–]yasth 2 points3 points ago

Eh well you aren't banned. I mean what are you asking? It means what it says, you aren't picked for this round, but if you want to apply for more, knock yourself out. So it is both sincere, and polite, but not too much of either. (They are sincerely offering you the chance to apply to public positions that you could have anyways, how polite.)

Required to do a research project as part of hiring process... is this common? by courtesy-flushin jobs

[–]yasth 2 points3 points ago

Eh sometimes, ask them if it is the same project for all applicants. If it is then likely it is as they say.

The idea is that talking about a small project is more representative of an applicant's business ability than a normal interview (which mostly is a test of small group sociability)

when and how to tell my boss i am going to b-school in august. by msharma444in jobs

[–]yasth 0 points1 point ago

Ah well you never know. The simplest way is to find other examples. If someone else did something even remotely similar that is going to be a heck of a lot easier than just straight up inaugurating a new program.

Realistically I'd give a month of notice (if you can afford the (generally) quite remote possibility of immediate job loss). I also would be fully prepared to not get made part time (not just because it is a possibility, but because it is probably a quite likely, if not the most likely outcome).

Have a very good idea of when you could work, and for how long. This includes days of availability. Expect to get straight up screwed on rates. Focus on why this is a good thing for your boss.

Best of luck, it won't be easy.

[–]yasth 1 point2 points ago

A lot will depend on factors not in evidence: your job (some fields are just more part timeable), your relationship with your boss, the company culture, whether the company is cutting payroll etc.

Fair warning, most attempts to switch to contract don't work for one reason or another. Generally the big issues are cultural and pay. Companies like having employees (the same also is why telecommuting is so rare in the corporate world). Also companies used to employees tend to want to way underpay for contract labor.

Must you really go full time student? I mean most places have tuition assistance programs.

E-Mail potential deal breaker? by ithrowawayandstuffyain jobs

[–]yasth 0 points1 point ago

Eh it matters but less so than most people think. Most likely you'll be rejected long before anyone bothers to google you, and gaming stuff isn't that bad. In the future use something better, but don't sweat it, you probably didn't really do any serious harm to those applications (though as mentioned you likely won't get them because of the job market)

Mother's Issue - Friend Applying for Same Job by MarineClimateLoverin jobs

[–]yasth 4 points5 points ago

Eh if her friend is external (even with a prior tie) likely they won't even interview her. (All somewhat qualified Internal candidates are generally a "must" interview as a political matter), so at that point things will be fine.

Just have your mother explain the situation wish her friend the best, and hope that none of it matters.

How can I network/find leads when visiting a city for a week? by ecacn6in jobs

[–]yasth 0 points1 point ago

It depends on the field. In some cases there are profesional organziations be it AIGA or a local Linux User Group. Other times it will be fairly obvious (i.e. for most court related stuff, you want the closest cheapish bar to the courthouse). Otherwise, gallery openings aren't a horrid place to meet people.

Oh and don't discount local reddits, or just a random facebook ask.

Any consultants who travel for work? by raindogin jobs

[–]yasth 0 points1 point ago

It depends on the subfield. Well, actually pretty much just no all around, but some get closer to that. 3x speed is a heck of a lot though. I mean the closest I can think of to a multiplier like that is desktop tech vs. helpdesk, but that is obviously very entry level (and even then that doesn't require actual travel so much as not being able to always check in with home base).

Also like suppasonic says, at the end of the day it is the work you do.

How I see Assassin's Creed III as a Canadian by anzlolin funny

[–]yasth 0 points1 point ago

Eh I only mention it as I previously mentioned and linked a pre civil war memoir of the Hungary conflict called "Scenes of the civil war in Hungary, in 1848 and 1849" published in 1850. Hungary actually did send an effective demand of succession, and fought for it, and indeed won the freedom from political rule they sought, without any serious actions to claim all of the empire. This suggests a much less sudden upending of the linguistic meaning and a gradual drift to using civil war in a broader sense. (Indeed revolution, a light, and non scientific search shows, seems to have been a later appellation to the conflict, at least among English sources). If the ACV had been successful, then yes, it would probably have been called a revolution.

I am not saying that on one side of the ACV there was exactly the same level of use of the term civil war, just that the ACV was not a some watershed moment.

How I see Assassin's Creed III as a Canadian by anzlolin funny

[–]yasth 0 points1 point ago

Ah I believe the Hungarian use would qualify, though that is less popular decision than the nobles just saying to the Hapsburgs, "Thanks, but how about you not have any power". Of course in the case of Hungary there ended up being an internal resistance, but whether or not this was roughly the same as the varied loyalties of the Native American tribes, or the split loyalties of several states, is rather complicated. (There are have been a lot of contentious articles written about the degree of on the ground support for actual Southern succession at the ground level. Also southern resistance to secession appears to have been a larger issue then mid century historians gave credit to.

The ACV has been kicked around by historians since shortly after it concluded (though it should be noted that more or less no one touched it in the immediate post war period to the early 1880s). First it was appropriated by union sympathizers, then most of those having died, appropriated by Southern scholars for extensive revisions (wherein the war became about anything but slavery), and then after Vietnam new perspectives were taken from it, and now all sorts of things are being done (much of which reflect the interests of the day, terrorism, reintegration of veterans, etc.). Still the actual war as a novel thing has deep roots throughout much of the history, as both the northerners, and the southerners were flattered by the idea of a unique and "American" war. (Indeed you can see similarities in the WWI histories from between the world wars, where the "great way", and the "war to end all wars" grew ever more righteous, epic, and unique, until it was not). Anyways you don't get good history till everybody involved is dead, and their sons and grandsons too.

Anyways, contemporary serious scholarship on the American civil war is rather dismissive of the idea that it was massively different than anything ever before. It had some modest import in terms of weaponry (some of which would be taken back at the Battle of Lissa with "Ram Anything that is Grey"), though even that was more notable for the first use in pitched battle. The time period was actually very quiet among major armies fielding modern weapons, and would remain so for the rest of the century.

Fun fact, outside of formal argument, logical fallacies are not always a bad thing. Take Ad hominem, if someone has been convicted of fraud, then that is relevant if they were suggesting an investment. The burden of proof shifts to them (well even more so, one should always be cautious about investing).

You could cite several instances where civil war wasn't used in cases where one might think it would be. My issue with actually hunting is that the NYT digital archives go back to 1851, and I wasn't sure I could find a reference in that time, as last I looked the keyword searching for those early periods was astonishingly bad. (Also I don't have much in the way of online searchable eighteenth century references, it appears to be a gap in the collections) I certainly wasn't going to go to paper for you. Thankfully they have improved (though only somewhat), so have some random articles Kansas, Sonora, and lots of others show use of the term to describe local conflicts, with varied recognition. If that isn't enough here, have a memoir of civil war of Hungary in 1848. (Your actual definition of what in particular made the ACV so different is somewhat unclear, but I assure you it was unusual mostly for scope (and not really that exceptional)

I've heard the idea that the ACV was not a true civil war before, even by some respectable sources, but in every case it has no cites, nor supports. It is a bit of folk wisdom passed along without thought. If it had been successful it might be worthy of a grander name, but it wasn't.

Oh and the only reason I even attempted to provide sources was because of the shift of tone.

Oh and I do hope you did well on your finals (grading or taking).

How I see Assassin's Creed III as a Canadian by anzlolin funny

[–]yasth 0 points1 point ago

Actually Al-Qaeda didn't claim Afghanistan that would be the Taliban.

Also I noted that the Al-Qaeda thing was useful before you changed what you were arguing.

So yeah that sort of lazy arguing is why I don't want to bother hunting down sources you'll find acceptable. You've been wrong time and time and time again. If you want to believe you are right (for some circumscribed impossibly useless version of right), then go right ahead, you are obviously not a scholar, so it will never come up where it matters, and I imagine most people you know tune you out anyways, so no harm done.

Also as an aside calling something stupid and untrue is hardly petty, it is goes to the heart of the matter. It is unsupported not petty (and it is unsupported because you are unimportant). Use words better.

How I see Assassin's Creed III as a Canadian by anzlolin funny

[–]yasth 0 points1 point ago

Your initial statement was wrong. You do realize that when replying to things, I can't see your edit (nor can I without some trouble see when you made them).

I skipped over a single word (past). It happens. Anyways honestly before the civil war it gets annoying in terms of online archives etc. to prove you wrong, which is why I won't, but you are in fact still wrong.

A belligerent power is not a state. A state is a state. Seriously I even specifically mentioned a legal meaning. Sometimes a definition has force of law. Recognition as a belligerent power is indeed possibly a thing we can use to distinguish a bunch of crazed cultists from the CSA. Here if we were still arguing about the present day is where I'd murder your definition some more with Al-Qaeda (which also is recognized as belligerent power under some understandings of the term). It hardly matters now though, as I don't feel like digging back in the archives. (See sometimes in actual rhetoric one asks for a delineation knowing the answer, but you want to pin the opponent with their own words).

Perhaps rhetoric isn't my strong point, but that makes you look rather poor indeed as you've managed to lose to someone who gave up trying along time ago.

How I see Assassin's Creed III as a Canadian by anzlolin funny

[–]yasth 0 points1 point ago

I am saying that it completely makes your initial statement way back up there:

The Civil War was not a civil war; civil wars concern the struggle between two (or more) groups for control of a country. (The goal of the Confederacy was not to gain control of the United States). wrong. You did not say historically, or give any such indication. You were wrong, and now are trying to move the argument. You apparently conceded the point but just kept on nattering on.

Obviously I didn't say the Sudan conflict occurred before the civil war, I just didn't read your poor sad little words closely enough to realize that you were fighting with a dead zombie of an argument.

Also I never compared the CSA to crazed cultists except to ask you to point out a difference. A difference I should note you have provided no cites, and demonstrably wrong statements about. (Shockingly enough belligerent states still has a meaning, and had a meaning, and in several court cases it was determined that you can't have a belligerent state without statehood)

You are, as it happens, wrong historically as well, but lord knows how long it would take to beat that into your head. I think you even know in your deepest heart that you are wrong.

How I see Assassin's Creed III as a Canadian by anzlolin funny

[–]yasth 0 points1 point ago

So you are more or less just saying that in some past time civil war meant something different, and that somehow matters?

A) that isn't true, B) It is so stupid a point that it just makes you extra nice (in the ancient sense)

Looking for employment after a two-year absence from the job force. Advice? by Ima_lil_gspotin jobs

[–]yasth 0 points1 point ago

Well hopefully you've been volunteering all this time, right? In that case you'd just list the volunteer position as a job notate it with (volunteer), and move on (explaining the work permit issue in the cover letter).

If you've not been volunteering... Well you can try just shaving off the dates. Just no dates for anything. It might get you an interview where you can explain it. Otherwise you have to explain it, and yeah I don't know obviously it goes in the cover letter. Maybe a placeholder job "Waiting for Work Permit" and then what you did in the mean time?
