I think you're being generous with "minimum wage." They clearly aren't even paying that. I love how the market is always the solution except in this case. Obviously they need to raise the rates and they will find workers. Easy as pie.

the question is, why the f is it 2011 and there haven't been any serious changes? I only recently moved to Chicago so I don't know all the history/details of this stuff, but it seems like Chicago hasn't invested in infrastructure since the 50s. I blame it on voters electing the same idiots year in year out.

So the system now is "hire 3-4 people per train to check every ticket, if they don't have a ticket make them pay $3 more for a ticket." That's a dumb idea and too labor heavy. Instead have 1-2 per line (so I mean all morning going on random trains) and check for tickets. If someone doesn't have a ticket, issue a $200 fine. Much more efficient and less labor intensive.

So conductors are not the 'drivers' of the trains then? What responsibilities does a conductor have?

How many ticket checkers do they have on each train? 2 to 4? That means 2-4 wages, benefits, pensions for each one. It would make a difference. I would love to crack open their books. Do they even have to pay for the rails? Like a rental fee?

How is that arrogant? If the train management is still using such an antiquated system for ticketing, imagine how the rest of the system is. To the point below about diesel cost, infrastructure, etc..., chalk that up to bad planning also.
