Yzi, $250 french-made tablet. by kr0ostiin Android

French rebranded, made and designed in China. They hired some nice web developers though. Specs look identical to every shanzhai tablet out there.

Multitasking on the HTC One X isn't broken, it's customized | Android Central by infamousjaxin Android

[–]xaueious 1 point2 points ago

The author hasn't made a case of anything. Quoting minfree has no relation with what HTC actually did or didn't do in Sense 4, at least in this case. HTC didn't touch the minfree settings specifically by much at all, considering all the RAM onboard the One X. If anything, HTC would have done more to the Android framework at activitymanagerservice - which still wouldn't be a kernel level change. It would take a frameworks software developer to actually explain what is going on, and the author really hasn't said much at all.

There should be mount commands in init.rc, this should be enough to get you going.

That's exactly why those microSDs are in there. They are not good for the write cycles Android have and will pick up bad sectors more quickly as well.

Any up-to-date list of CM9 features? by xi_mezmerize_ixin Android

[–]xaueious 5 points6 points ago*

Sometimes, the changelog items themselves do not explain the feature, and you don't find out what the change does until you read the commit source itself or the related Gerrit review. The changelog as it stands is a list of the code changes that have been committed into Cyanogenmod. People tend to rave about features after they have been tested, which is usually way after the changelog has been made. Cyanogenmod members are developers first, and wont necessarily take the extra time to write about added features in layman terms. I remember when Cyanogen used to do both the development and the description of the build back in the day with the G1 builds, but Cyanogenmod has gotten much bigger since then, and there are multiple developers committing a lot more code than before.

Meanwhile, here is a list of the types of relevant changes made for custom firmwares, but I wont take the time to explain them. On Github, you can view the histories of the changes made from your browser. Just skip over the changes you don't understand. As an end-user, you are usually the most concerned about the framework or system package changes. If you can't be bothered with that, the best you can do is to wait for other people to review the build.

  • kernel, kernel drivers, kernel modules
  • frameworks - a lot of the good stuff happens here
  • libraries (can be under hardware or your device tree)
  • system packages (Trebuchet, CMParts are a couple of the main packages of interest)
  • initialization scripts (.rc, .d, under your device tree)

Android video player that can handle almost anything...? by nissmo66in Android

mkv is really just the container and has nothing to do with the media size. I don't find performance significantly worse with mkv containers compared to mp4s.

Malicious QR Codes: A Mobile Security Blind Spot by vlodiain Android

[–]xaueious 1 point2 points ago

I meant that even if you go to a webpage that tries to perform an exploit, you would be better protected from such attacks if you had an updated browser. As long as you always open the link into your browser that has been updated, you will be in better shape than if you used the non-updatable one built into your system image.

Actually, I just realized a problem with this approach. Updating the browser application in Android resets the default browser intent. So even updating the browser still isn't really feasible for the masses :(

Malicious QR Codes: A Mobile Security Blind Spot by vlodiain Android

[–]xaueious 2 points3 points ago

Depends. There is a browser bug affecting all devices predating Android 2.3.5/3.2 that does exactly this, but that has been patched for newer versions of Android. The Android browser may be vulnerable to other webkit based exploits though. When in doubt, updated versions of Opera/Firefox are more secure than the stock browser that ships with your phone.

Wind has far superior reception than Mobilicity north of Steeles by xaueiousin toronto

[–]xaueious[S] 1 point2 points ago*

Speedtest over 3g done for Toronto server on May 5 2012 at intersection of Major Mackenzie and Leslie. Mobilicity's HTC Panache on left, and Wind's LG Optimus 2x on the right. Both on HSDPA. Results in kilobits per second.

Mobilicity's 3g is just really slow, due to poor reception here. That's good enough for me, and I have been a Mobilicity customer for a couple of months. But keep this in mind when considering the unlimited data plans available from Mobilicity. Your data speed is very dependent on the quality of your cell reception.

Edit: I've been using Mobilicity for almost two months. I've been able to compare with Wind reception and 3G data speeds with my cousin's phone. This photo is to illustrate my point. I didn't realize how much better Wind is than Mobilicity north of Steeles before I actually had the chance to test both side-by-side.

For a visual comparison of the actual coverage, check the the cellular coverage maps here:

Depending on what you are, YMMV. I think that's a given.

I have done a couple of speed tests at Yonge near midtown. Even though the reception is consistently 5 bars, 3G speeds feel quite slow. I will need to do a speed test to verify this, but I think it is usually below 2Mbps, which isn't really great.

Nvidia Tegra 3 being built on an older last-generation 40nm process is not Nvidia's best by xaueiousin Android

[–]xaueious[S] 0 points1 point ago*

Thanks for the corrections. Will read up more on the 45% claim by Samsung. But 15% for the device as a whole makes sense because of power draw from other components (i.e.: ~50% more efficient CPU, but CPU accounts for 30% of total power draw).

ICS/Nexus Rom for Infuse? by _For_Science_in Android

[–]xaueious 0 points1 point ago

TouchWiz is as raw as it gets when it comes to Android skins. You should be at least on 2.3 UCLB3 though, not 2.2.

You do not get a lot of extra functionality moving up from 2.2 though, IMO. You need to be more specific about what you are actually looking to do on your devices.

SD card setup on the Galaxy Tab 2 is unacceptable. by Notesurferin Android

[–]xaueious 0 points1 point ago

You could root it and reverse the mounting points if it is really a problem. Samsung made it that way because they believe that it is sufficient for most end-users.

Not switching to any ICS firmwares until everything works and is close to as stable as can be. That's probably 1 to 2 months away. Still on stock TMobile customized, because my battery life is great and everything is smooth enough for me.
