Anyone with a philosophy degree actually get a job? by chrisbeatsrockin philosophy

The scholarships and financial aid are really great. I'm getting paid to go to school. It's a pretty sweet gig.

It was meant to be a tongue in cheek comment though, but sarcasm is often lost on the internet. It just doesn't translate well through comments on forums sometimes.

I'm a seminarian. It's not a job, but it pays the bills.

Can the word 'God' have usefulness in a post-theistic society? by maddnesin philosophy

[–]wuguwa 0 points1 point ago

My understanding of Spong's claim that God is the "Ground of all being" is that we are all created in the image of God and that we all have the capacity of God. The Hebrew term "tselem" fits here. It is kind of like the "Maker's mark" on Creation. (Sorry, I know all of the capital letters aren't necessary. Force of habit.) This doesn't mean that God exists in a pantheon only that God is reflected in Creation. This is also a Buddhist concept. I hiked the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage trail in Japan and there were sort of mini-shrines called "oji" all along the way. The Shinto understanding of these shrines was that there were different kami in residence at each shrine and that each one sort of embodied the surrounding of the shrine. The Buddhist understanding of the same shrines was that each one represented a different instantiation of Buddha. I think Spong's understanding of God reflects the latter.

In answer to your question: I think that we can have an intimation of God. We cannot "know" God perfectly and a lot of theological problems arise when too many labels are applied to God. It's problematic to say anything about God at all. I am an anomaly in the Christian community as is Spong. I don't think there is much that can be said about God and I make very few claims about the Divine. I don't say anything that I don't think I can back up and I never cite scripture as evidence. I would agree that many people need to change their understanding of God, because, frankly, most peoples beliefs about God are theologically shaky. But I don't think that attaching more or different labels is the solution. I just think that more people need to be comfortable saying "I don't know" instead of scrambling for a bad response to questions that we just can't always answer. Is that fair to say?

I have a couple of issues here. First of all I'm confused as to why you believe Spong's beliefs are pantheistic. It's true that he is very much "Buddho-Christian" as they say, but Buddhist beliefs aren't themselves pantheistic, so I'm not sure how you equate the two. Secondly, I'm not sure that the focus should be on redefining God. Wittgenstein points out that all we can do is label things. That we can associate words with God does not define God, it doesn't make God what God is. Changing what we say about God does not change God. Maybe this isn't what you were going for, but it's still an issue that I have with your argument. Anyway, I'll admit right off the bat that I'm an Episcopal seminarian with a degree in philosophy who's done a lot of work on both Christianity and Buddhism as well as Spong. I'd just like it if you'd flush out those issues a little bit.

Hey /r/religion. Want to be a moderator? by BritishEnglishPolicein religion

Religion is a touchy issue. I've been in the middle of one or two heated debates that were sparked by a reddit post and there's nothing wrong with that until they get personal. The problem is religion is always personal. I think that a moderator or /r/religion should just be on the lookout for ad hominem remarks and for anything else that is inappropriate. Just because there are going to be debates doesn't mean they have to be nasty ones. We can help set a good tone.

Feels like there's a lump in my throat. What do? by blackhole1138in Health

I had the same problem. Turned out it was something called "silent reflux". The doctor said it was acid reflux that I didn't notice. It caused a hernia in my throat, and that was the lump I felt. You should get it checked out, but the best way to fix it is to control the reflux.
