The 38 Essential Restaurants in Philly by jennynycin philadelphia

[–]workingdankoch 2 points3 points ago

I just ate at Le Virtu last night, and let me tell you, sir, that I think that you are absolutely nuts. It was my second time there, and my eyes crossed again at how good their pasta dishes were.

I agree that Mercato belongs on the list, though.

Chocolate, peanut butter and jelly macarons. Just finished making them! by schoolhardin food

What flavor of jelly did you use for the filling? Based off of the coloring, it looks like it might be raspberry. In any case, I wholeheartedly approve.

Screw you foodie hipsters, this guy's a classic. by SuicideNotein food

[–]workingdankoch 1 point2 points ago

I suppose the irony here is that with a plaid thrift store shirt, the Tapatio guy would look like a hipster, what with the moustache and the heavy-lidded eyes.

But yeah, his sauce is a hit with me as well, and I don't give a whit who knows it.

I've thanked Michael Zinman many-a-time over the years.

Troubles with Grammar. by Daurichain writing

[–]workingdankoch 0 points1 point ago

The first half is solid, up to 'stirring Ivan'. From there, things got muddled for two reasons:

(a) It's not entirely clear who is speaking the dialog. From context, it would seem to be the first character, but the grammar suggest that it's actually Ivan who says it.

(b) The 'He said with a hoarse croak' stinger is clunky and redundant, as written.

The fastest way to make it clear would be:

He reined in his horse, stirring Ivan who gave a surprised mutter. “Smoke to the north. The people there will be able to help us.” [the first character] said with a hoarse croak. '

That doesn't speak to artistry, necessarily, but it's clearer. I'm not a fan of 'surprised mutter' -- I'm not entirely sure how one would mutter surprisedly, but everything would otherwise be clean.

Good luck, and hopefully this helps! The story itself sounds interesting from this snippet, so keep at it!

Why do new Adam Sandler movies suck so much? by lesdumboin movies

[–]workingdankoch 0 points1 point ago

Sandler is a savvy business man, and his films make money. His film persona, as repugnant as it can be to you and me, hits the sweet spot for the demographic that most frequently schleps out to movie theaters -- adolescent boys.

Interestingly, as miserable as his alter-ego was in Funny People, everything I hear about Sandler portrays him as a real mensch. He's loyal to the people around him, does his best to spread his good fortune around, and just tries to be a nice guy. He's just never seen the rewards in taking cinematic risks, and the few he has taken (Punch Drunk Love, Reign Over Me) are divisive at best.

I know there are a lot of people who sing the praises of Punch Drunk Love. It's a PT Anderson film with a comedian playing a dramatic role -- critics were bound to love it -- but I found it alienating and deeply difficult to enjoy. Sandler probably thought to himself "what the hell am I doing" and busied himself with another decade of seemingly crappy movies that make a lot of money.

Geeky wall décor by wadakidain geek

Not a bad list -- gets beyond the usual pixel-art examples to give a few creative ideas on how to do this. I'm half tempted to try a couple of these myself (although most of these ideas are pretty labor-intensive).

The Old Action News Theme by johnnyzitoin philadelphia

That is music that can make just about anything exciting. They could be showing footage of me buying a hot dog from a street vendor, and this music would make it seem more exciting than the opening credits to Mannix.

A prophecy... by hgpotin funny

Agreed. It pretty much destroys the whole pattern. Windows 3.1 was... not good. An ersatz melted-wax version of Mac OS 6. Windows 95 made the leap from 'barely adequate' to quite good. They really nailed it.

Marty looks absolutely adorable in that getup. I think a 'Marty The Old Time Photographer' stuffed animal would be huge. Huge!

South Philly: Because fuck you, parking signs. by uselessdegreein philadelphia

I'm pretty sure that's the Oregon stop on the Broad Street line right there in the background. Strange South Philly parking comes in all flavors.

I think that crease in the sign is from its bruised ego.
