Dan Savage Points Out Bible is Pro-Slavery, Calls Students Who Won't Listen Pansy-Asses. by twitch1982in atheism

Neither will alienating the demographic you're trying to change.

Pushing too hard makes it so that there's a room, a choir, and you preaching in it. Dan's speech is really great right here, but if he's putting himself so far on the other side of the line that he's not even heard by the people committing bullying/hate/etc., might as well just circle up and start jerkin'.

It's been around for a while though. First place I know of this is in Italian renaissance gardens like Villa lante, mid 16th century. They have a formal stone dinner table at the end of the garden with this feature built right in. Pretty crazy because the table is about 40-50 feet long. ch-ch-ch-check it out.

learn how to silkscreen. it costs about 50 bucks and you could produce a bunch very easily. That said, i feel more like these are memes than they are pieces.

you'll need one silkscreen, some photo emulsion, a sheet of transparency, a xerox to put the image on that transparency, and a minimum 100W lightbulb.

Sorry this isn't my self-conscious girlfriend's work, nor am I asking anyone's approval for a gift idea. This is my latest acrylic painting. by gobmoreshroomsbrahin Art

[–]wonderhat 7 points8 points ago

not the poster, but just thought that i'd give some constructive criticism while the question is asked. it's great that you're getting encouraged, but your work could really benefit from (first) a greater skill at mixing colors not out of the tube. i assume you're using acrylics since their quick dry time can make it more difficult. I'd suggest working to mix every color before it touches the canvas. (second) you should try and get a better sense of light. this'll just come from working more with observational paintings first. they're boring, but when you get those right, you've got the skills regarding light dark/warm cool range, you'll be able to really nail the ones that you're working with now.

keep it up!

What do you think about kurzweil's view of the future of technology as presented in "the singularity is near?" Valid or no? And, maybe more importantly, do you think it's relevant in the current state of politics/environmental issues? (as in, do you believe the issues outside of technology will end up slowing or halting some of his projections for tech future?)

MICA and UofB Presidents Kill Mount Royal Avenue Bike Lane. by bmorein baltimore

do you know mt. royal? do you ride on it / cross it?

[–]wonderhat 2 points3 points ago

The issue is not the amount of time it takes for the cars to get back and forth, it's congestion. Kids cross those streets at all times of the day (including rush hour) at non cross locations. when the lights are red, they already go back a far ways; but with only one lane, there would be moving traffic almost all times at every point of that street.

a girl was killed crossing the street 2/3 years ago. i've heard that more have been killed every couple years. i honestly think the situation is worse for pedestrians than it is for bikers right now.

as far as their requirement, is that true? it sounds like (from your description) that they only needed it on new street projects. all construction on mt. royal ended a year ago (much before this decision was made, it seems). do you have more info on that?

current mica student here. i like the idea of a bike lane (i bike down mt. royal hill every day), but honestly think that it would be bad for pedestrians and most people in general if the 2 car lanes changed into one car lane and one bike lane.

that road is already pretty congested, especially since it leads right into and out of 83. at the moment, it's roomy enough that i don't think it's necessary to have a dedicated bike lane as long as everyone keeps aware and bikers stay to the right.

I think that in particular is related a lot to his libertarian roots and views on a free market.

For the free market, there's very little incentive for becoming more environmentally friendly other than "earning support from the green demographic," which is why free market supporters often deny global warming. To accept it would be to acknowledge that there is a fundamental failure with the concept of an unregulated free market.

The libertarian ideas (as most redditors know) have a lot of benefits for backing the government off the individual, but it also destroys a lot of (the little) accountability that we have over corporations.

nope.

and regarding your other comment. that's actually something we did when we had our first show that our 1st ep was ready for. we were charging 5 bucks for cds, and then we spray painted one of them gold and charged double. someone bought it, so i think it's safe to say that this is a sustainable marketing strategy.

also, i meant to write this before to anyone looking at the comments ::: we have a full length coming out in the spring on evil weevil records, so keep an eye out if you liked this stuff. thanks!

There are a couple of reasons why your defense is weak. What is your response when someone references the huge database of videogame fanart/replications on the internet or basically by anyone bored in a class in middle or high school? Levine and Lichtenstein (and warhol, while we're talking about appropriation) stole and stole but the reasons they were successful was 1. because they used items that were widely recognized and 2. because at the time it was shaky stuff to photograph a photograph or to just use comic book styles. In postmodern art, rarely (if ever) is the art the object itself. Rather, the idea is the focus. You could take a random item out of your room and put it on a pedestal and say, "So? Duchamp did readymades too!" and we'll say, "Yes, but why should we give a shit if you did it again?"

If this is actually a piece about appropriation rather than a piece that is a cathartic piece of videogame/internet fanart (notice that it exists solely on the internet for the majority of its viewers at this point), you would be at least acknowledging the amount of fanart that already exists. That would mean drawing a drawing or a deviantart forum (the forum itself). Or it could be a cathartic piece, but for it to be art and not craft (you said yourself that it's part of the fine art program), you'd have to do something like a sickening amount of repetition to bring the focus of the piece back on yourself (for example doing dozens of these and presenting them in a way that shows that the point is the catharsis). Until then it falls in line with the thousands of bits of fanart that already exists.
