TROPHY CASE

Other religions by devil_92in atheism

[–]wonderfuldog 0 points1 point ago

are religions who does not really bother anyone okey??

Personally, I don't think that anybody should ever believe, claim, or teach anything that isn't true, or believe, claim, or teach anything to be true for bad reasons.

A topic that I think we should all learn more about. :-)

Could someone explain the No True Scotsman fallacy? by DavidTheWinin atheism

[–]wonderfuldog 1 point2 points ago

The hallmark of the real No True Scotsman fallacy is that you present a definition of something, and then when somebody points out a problem with it , you change it and claim that your new definition was really your original definition.

After reading most of the posts to r/atheism for over two years now,

"well-traveled, condescending, and dismissive" != "wrong."

I honestly don't know of any female champions of reason.

Marie Curie?

the first person honored with two Nobel Prizes - in physics and chemistry.

[In childhood] The deaths of her mother and sister, according to Robert William Reid, caused Maria to give up Catholicism and become agnostic.

Pope's butler arrested over Vatican letters allegedly exposing corruption by daonlyfreezin atheism

[–]wonderfuldog 0 points1 point ago

I wouldn't be too surprised to find out that the Vatican still has dungeons and torture equipment and says

"Oh, we haven't used those since 1850. They're just a historical legacy. Honest."

(I'm not claiming that they do have dungeons and torture equipment. Just that it wouldn't surprise me.)

Uluru isn't sacred. It's a rock. Get over it. by tarabluhin atheism

This is meant to be /r/atheism, where we find all religions stupid.

That is itself a stupid mis-statement.

You cease to be conscious and you stay that way forever.

Your body rots, gets burned up, eaten by wild dogs, whatever.

This is actually completely obvious.

The term atheist is nothing more than a phase which many teenagers go through when they are not completely sure what to make with their lives. As they grow up, they finally realize that the purpose of life has nothing to do with atheism, agnosticism or any other faithless crap. Grow up already. by destinys_parentin atheism

Bertrand Russell. Died at the age of 97.

Russell described himself both as an agnostic and an atheist. For most of his adult life Russell maintained that religion is little more than superstition and, despite any positive effects that religion might have, it is largely harmful to people. He believed religion and the religious outlook (he considered communism and other systematic ideologies to be forms of religion) serve to impede knowledge, foster fear and dependency, and are responsible for much of the war, oppression, and misery that have beset the world.

Believe in Love? by theguywhopickedkirbyin atheism

[–]wonderfuldog 1 point2 points ago

There may be people out there who are using the word "artichoke" to mean "the huge gray animal with big ears, tusks, and a trunk", but said people are wrong and we shouldn't pay attention to them.

This is a common comparison and a dumb one.

[reposting from - http://www.reddit.com/r/atheism/comments/qsu5z/on_the_god_is_in_my_heart_god_is_in_my_mind/ - ]

  • There are subjective feelings, emotions, opinions, and ideas.

  • There are empirical facts in the objective external world.

No one can prove anything about the former.

It should be quite straightforward to prove the latter.

(Or if we can't provide substantial evidence that proposed fact "X" is true, then we shouldn't believe that proposed fact "X" is true.)

  • If I say "I like pistachio ice cream", that's my subjective opinion, and there's no way to prove it.

  • If I say, "I have a magnet in this matchbox", it should be very easy to prove or disprove that.

If someone claims that God is a feeling, emotion, opinion, or idea, then that's just their feeling, emotion, opinion, or idea, and it has nothing to do with the objective external world.

On the other hand, if they claim that God empirically exists in the objective external world, then we're entitled to require that they prove that, or else we're under no obligation to believe it.

(In fact, if they can't prove that it's true, then they shouldn't believe it either.)

----

So:

  • "I like pistachio ice cream" is a statement about my subjective feelings, and it says nothing at all about objective external facts.

  • "I feel love for X" is a statement about my subjective feelings, and it says nothing at all about objective external facts. (In fact, come to think about it, people are sometimes passionately in love with imaginary characters who don't exist.)

That's not who we are. We're r/atheism

By definition, the posters composing r/atheism are r/atheism.

If you don't like them, fine, but you can't say that they're "not r/atheism."
