Recent compsci grad with low gpa (2.5) that has already cost me in two interviews. by fivepastsixin compsci

Number of companies that want to see my GPA that I would want to work for: ~5

Number of companies that don't care about my GPA that I would want to work for: hundreds

That said, make sure you got your coding skills up to snuff and demonstrate that you can and do keep learning on your own time.

I'd like them to be hidden at least, or better, put under ~/.config/ like my Linux desktop. When I do 'ls' I want to see 'documents, downloads, movies, music, projects, tv' only.

Fair assessment. I try to weigh 'closed integration' vs 'open mess' in every case. The iPhone package just won this round for me, that's all.

My argument was meant more as: people do know better than me what to create to satisfy the most users (not necessarily me alone). Do a lot more people find iTunes more user-friendly than dragging music into folders? Probably.

Below is a list of folders various apps have been littered all over EVO 4G's SD card. I would be every worse if I didn't clear it up every other month. I wouldn't say the Android platform is one that understands organization at all.

2Player, Android, AndroidThemes, DCIM, Downloads, Evernote,

GOLauncherEX, GOSMS, Handmark, Jfc, LOLcats-data, LOST.DIR,
Local, MIUI, Music, Nook, Playlists, Shah, Swype, TitaniumBackup,
TitaniumBackup_license.txt, Wapedia, alarms, albumthumbs, app-data,

com.espn.score_center, com.touchboom.dice, data, download,

Ah okay.

Not treating the phone simply as a USB drive does have the advantage of not having to worry about mounting and unmounting the drive. There's wifi sync also. I guess Steve Jobs also wanted you to use iTunes' strict structure to manage the device (instead of possibly putting files willy-nilly all over the it).

Take a look at the home folder on a well-used Android phone. Hella messy.

Tips for Ruby dev on an Arch Linux box? by renaebairin ruby

[–]wiLD0 3 points4 points ago

If you really want to learn minimalist Linux and can afford some time for a real learning experience I suggest starting with plain Arch and spending time setting up the drivers and desktop environment.

Also, Linux can definitely be installed from adequately-sized USB drives if you want to save the CDs.

One thing I suggest you really not miss out learning are the tiling window managers like AwesomeWM. For a VIM guy like me that package is a dream. Also, don't miss freetype2-infinality. It brings the 'details and customizability' you crave to the 2nd order of magnitude in font rendering.

As a Mac guy now those are the two things I miss about Arch (GNU/Linux in general really, Arch just makes it all simple and easy).

Hah. The way I see it, it's just as easy. But yeah, it is a little more involved than just sticking to one version of Ruby for the whole system which is allowable on most Linux distros.

Microsoft claims: "For a $1,000 laptop, Motorola is demanding that Microsoft pay a royalty of $22.50 for its 50 patents on the video standard, called H.264." Forgets to mention that it makes ten dollars for every $200 Android phone sold. by 3825in technology

[–]wiLD0 -1 points0 points ago*

Looking at the rest of the thread that's going on here, it seems that yes, there are contractual agreements for companies who have pooled their patents into a FRAND patent licensing package.

However, not all FRAND patents are licensed so as contractually bound to by a group of companies. Many times a lone company may do it out of goodwill and simplicity. Motorola not being part of that group for H.264 patents falls in this case. So isn't Motorola fully protected by law to make new licensing agreements of a patent as unfair, unreasonable, and discriminatory as they wish? I doubt that estoppel requires a previously made offer to always be available on the same terms in the future (unless such a promise has actually been made).

Microsoft claims: "For a $1,000 laptop, Motorola is demanding that Microsoft pay a royalty of $22.50 for its 50 patents on the video standard, called H.264." Forgets to mention that it makes ten dollars for every $200 Android phone sold. by 3825in technology

[–]wiLD0 -5 points-4 points ago*

Microsoft is making the claim in court that Motorola is not necessarily breaking any previous licensing agreement, any patent law, but it's anti-competitive for a popularly licensed patent to be on lockdown, meaning now not under FRAND terms any more. AFAIK FRAND is just a type of gentleman's agreement popular in industry, with no existence in any way in patent or anti-competition law.

I see the word 'promise' a LOT in that article and it just seems like Google is simply playing rougher with it's use of the patent system and Microsoft's best legal defense is 'not fair, boo hoo'.

Please comment in reply where I got the facts wrong.

For a company that's proud of themselves because they make more money from patent licensing to Android than from their own Windows Phone they should shut the hell up.

Microsoft collects license fees on 50% of Android devices, tells Google to "wake up" (Oct 2011)

Governer Christie: "Warren Buffett should shut up, if he wants to pay more taxes, write the government a check"... How can anyone be so fucking stupid? by eh777in business

[–]wiLD0 3 points4 points ago*

If Warren Buffet liquidated Berkshire Hathaway and gave it to the US Government the money would be seen as a 'budget relief' and would go towards more: military contracts, grants to 'too-American-to-fail' businesses, and vote-garnering pork grants and projects for donations and votes. The blood of this rare business treasure would be dry in just a few months.

The real problem are the politicians that care a little too much about their personal power and wealth than they do the people they serve.

Agreed, both is better. With serializable objects these days, turning it into both XML and JSON (or possibly any new data format) is much easier.

I'd always push for making a web service between the enterprise app and the client-side JS. If the organization doesn't understand that then you probably have much bigger troubles.

I'd just throw a JSON plugin onto my Wordpress installation instead. As a proof-of-feasibility the article works though.
