TIL 70% of the UK population support the death penalty by ultracynicin todayilearned

[–]whiteandnerdy1729 3 points4 points ago

I think the consensus is that it's around half, and that if anything a majority are in favour.

Here's a BBC article which has some relevant data and soundbites from politicos. In the second half it cites a variety of polls, all of which have majority support in varying degrees. I don't like it any more than you do. This is why we elect smart people to make decisions for us, rather than have referenda by default.

Huh. Do these not exist in the states?

You spelt it beautifully. Shame about 'probably', but 'escargot' was perfect.

It was in another thread.

That's not quite the case. I think it's a translation from a Papua New Guinea cannibal dialect, although that might not be the right language. 'Long pig' isn't an English thing. Why would it be?

The general consensus is 'sort of like pork'. Also, don't get kuru.

To play devil's advocate, it's plausible that balance is your brain interpreting a touch sensation on the hairs of the inner ear, but I think really it's all just semantics. A 'sense' isn't really a clearly-defined scientific term.

Women do have prostate tissue, but it's nowhere near as extensive. Citation needed.

Compression is math. Sort of. Clearly not a vector format of course.

I posted here about this the other day. The wikipedia page for senses says there's no scientific evidence that things like kinaesthesia and temperature sense aren't just extensions of the sense of touch. It agreed (cautiously) with the five senses theory. I'd link you, but I'm on my mobile.

I was diagnosed with ASD, and I've come a long way towards passing for normal in social settings. I'm still quirky, but generally in a good way rather than a disturbing you-have-a-problem sort of way.

While I agree that people on the spectrum should try to master social skills and interactions, it's also important that people are tolerant of the condition. Just as with any disability, both sides should want to maximise integration into society.

As for disapproving of those who don't try, while I have some sympathy for your point, it's important to remember that it's a spectrum condition. What might be achievable for one person could be impossible for another, depending on the severity of the condition. It's very hard to know how much effort a person is making without knowing them very well indeed.

Finally, it's also worth distinguishing acting normally in social situations from trying to change yourself and your personality. No-one should be expected to be 'more normal' as a person, except where their lack of typicality is harmful to others.

More to the point, homeopathic practitioners believe that the more diluted a solution is, the more effective it becomes.

Statistically speaking, most homeopathic solutions won't contain a single molecule of the original substance. Citation needed.

Take ten people. That's two fives, so there should be eight people without STDs. Put them in a room. You now have more than five people in a room without STDs. Sleep with them all.

It's not a misunderstanding about statistics, it's a total inability to reason.

Yeah you definitely can't catch it from saliva and I'm almost certain you can't get it from sweat either. Although the virus is present, it isn't in a high enough concentration to pose any danger. You would have to drink bucketloads of infected saliva to risk getting it yourself.
