Skiing is tons of fun, but this snack was also shared with snowboarders. We don't discriminate!

Haha, nope it's all just typical sandwich materials! Green stuff is indeed lettuce. Pot is for outside the bag-o-sammich.

EVEN if the Old Testament sounds like a wacky story and is pretty fun to read, if you DO read it, take it with a grain of salt or not at all.

It's a beautiful story. Every single sentence is brimming with social commentary and irony. I only read it in French, but I found it kind of poetic.

I feel like Ender's part of the story was just that, a story. It was brilliantly written, it had fantastic characters, an excellent plot- and certainly by itself could be one of my favourites, but it wasn't really life changing.

What DID stand out to me, however, was Peter and Valentine back on Earth and how they started controlling the boards and got politics really kicked up and stuff. These two kids changed a lot of shit internationally, and did it in a way that I'm sure is possible psychologically, it's just hard to do. I don't know, that part really stuck with me.

Oh, and I guess one of the over all themes that stuck with me too was the distinction between good and evil. You really started to hate some characters, but it also made you question what made someone good or bad and what they could do to change it. That theme is also brought up in the sequel, Speaker of the Dead. I just generally like books that deal with the discrepancies between good and evil though, so that could just be me.

I agree with you, with one contention. I feel like Siddhartha brought up a lot of spiritual ideas that are not limited to buddhism at all. I don't think he meant Sid as a story approach to teach buddhism, I think he just attached buddhist names to concepts a lot of religious and non-religious people alike share, just to make it simpler to understand and to fit the theme of the story.

I suppose it's because throughout 1984, the mood is constantly overbearing and oppressive, and the little moments of relief the characters have are seemingly very minor but hugely critical to put into contrast the terrible world they're living in. That's how 1984 draws people in, and that's how it gets it's message across. BNW, on the other hand, attempts to portray a lot of the same themes of 1984 in a completely different psychology. Both books discuss how to maintain ultimate power in a nation. How to make a "perfect" government that doesn't need to be changed, but they do it in completely different ways. While 1984 is heavy, oppressive, and negative, BNW portrays a world in which everyone is happy, and life is at peace. The books are good to read in contrast because the psychologies clash but they end up with the same overarching effect. It really makes you wonder which one would apply to our modern world better!

You won't regret reading it, I promise. And it's not as depressing as 1984. I too read 1984 first and Brave New World a few months after, and BNW has a different mood for sure. To be honest, initially I thought I wouldn't mind living in the environment that BNW describes throughout it's story. Incredibly thought provoking, and especially when read in contrast to 1984, it really puts into perspective how people gain power and the psychology behind maintaining it. Read it!
