[Build Ready] Time for something beefier than my current system by oldagein buildapc

[–]voxAtrophia 0 points1 point ago

A couple of things I noticed.

If you're not going to overclock, I think the Core i5 3450 is the recommended CPU in that price range now. Although the i5-2500K is only a few bucks more.

Your RAM is a triple stick kit, but your motherboard is dual channel. You'd be better off getting 2 sticks of 4GB.

If you're not overclocking, you probably don't need an aftermarket cooler.

If you take out the cooler and get the i5 3450, you should save enough to maybe go up to a 6870.

Just some thoughts.

What Prevents Physically Competitive Gaming From Catching On? by tranamin truegaming

[–]voxAtrophia 1 point2 points ago

What do you mean by "catching on" exactly?

With the Wii and Kinect, there are a ton of active games and they sell pretty well. Sarkos mentioned Wii Sports. It's not the best selling game of all time, but it was a pack-in so it is very likely to be the most played Wii game of all time. There was a big trend of active gaming when the Wii first came out.

And there was another wave of that when the Kinect came out. People liked Dance Central. And there are even straight exercise games. Zumba Fitness for Kinect sold a million copies in four months.

And to your point about using gaming as a mechanism to entice people to exercise, that's what apps like Fitocracy seek to do.

So if you want to know why, if it's obviously good for you, easy to do, relatively cheap, and now fun to exercise, why guys like you and me still don't do it, well, I don't know what to tell you.

[Build Help] New gaming PC! :D (Please help me!) by ClpRedditin buildapc

[–]voxAtrophia 1 point2 points ago

Does that $500 include monitor, OS, mouse, keyboard, etc.?

You can start with the sidebar, specifically the Logical Increments Guide. The recommendations for a $500 build a pretty solid (Pentium G850 and Radeon HD7770).

Also, 8GB of RAM and 500GB hard drive are pretty standard for a build. Any particular reason you specified that as your requirements?

I've never used it myself, but wouldn't freeNAS be a more appropriate OS.

Just a quick google search brings up this blog post about building a NAS to replace a drobo. You might get some ideas from there.

Where is the best place to get your TV fixed? by serious__questionin techsupport

[–]voxAtrophia 0 points1 point ago

There are probably a few local places around you. But it's unlikely to be cheaper than buying a new TV. Most of the time the parts are expensive or hard to find, and then there's the cost of labor on top of that. It's usually not worth it.

Just search google for TV repair around you. Or you can check the phone book.

Hey! Who remembers Final Fantasy 14? Seriously though, that game isn't going to make it, is it? by lolpancakeslolin Games

[–]voxAtrophia 0 points1 point ago

According to /r/ffxiv, they are making regular updates and it is slowly getting better. There is a big 2.0 release coming soon that may improve the game further (and will probably get a bigger marketing push.) If that doesn't succeed, then I imagine they will pull the plug.

Personally, I haven't tried it. I played XI for a few years and I was looking forward to XIV, but with the bad reviews, I didn't want to waste any time on it. If it's good, I'll check it out.

Click the Wrench icon in Chrome. Choose Settings. The first page should have the options to set your Home Page and default Search Engine.

If you click the Manage Search Engines button, you should be able to uninstall Splashtop.

I've never heard of it, but I'm guessing Splashtop is probably bundled with a lot of programs. So you could have installed it without knowing. What programs have you installed recently?

I'm up for doing whatever though.

Can I update my unlocked iphone 3gs and keep it unlocked? by proart123in techsupport

[–]voxAtrophia 0 points1 point ago

You don't want to update it. The newest version of iOS is meant for newer hardware. It probably can run, but it won't be a great experience.

What features are you wanting to use that are not available on iOS 4?

Is it just me or has it really been over 10 years since Square has made a good game. by Calikin rpg_gamers

[–]voxAtrophia 9 points10 points ago

Here is the list of SquareEnix games. They weren't SquareEnix until 2003, so you'll have to check the list of Squaresoft games to find FFX.

Personally, I see a lot of good games made after FFX. First of all, I preferred XI and XII more than X. Chrystal Chronicles is a good game, but I can see how not many people played that. Pretty much every Dragon Quest game is still viewed favorably.

You may have missed some of the handheld games. FFXII: Revenant Wings and The World Ends with You are pretty underrated. They have also made some FF Tactics games for the PSP and DS. There are some games that got decent reviews like Star Ocean and The Last Remnant.

My guess would be that, because they are a big publisher now, the SE developer arm pretty much focuses on maintaining the FF properties, and other developers focus on newer games. And they don't make Final Fantasy games as often as they used to. Since 2001, they've only made five in the main series. Two were MMOs, so if that's not your thing, you're pretty limited.

How to get rid of Windows 7 Firewall (Sphinx Soft Vers.)? by kimmisongin techsupport

[–]voxAtrophia 1 point2 points ago

Check in the Programs folder for an uninstaller. If you can't find one, use a program like Revo Uninstaller. If it doesn't show up in Revo's list, it has a feature where you can point at the icon in the System Tray and it will uninstall it.

How to get rid of Windows 7 Firewall (Sphinx Soft Vers.)? by kimmisongin techsupport

[–]voxAtrophia 1 point2 points ago

You can use the standard Add/Remove feature to uninstall any firewalls you have. Just look for Sphinx Soft or Windows 7 Firewall Control. (Note, Windows comes with a built-in firewall, and you can't uninstall that, but you can disable it. However, that probably won't even be necessary.)

Also, consider not using a firewall. Most of the time, they are more trouble than they're worth.

HELP! Windows 7 Screen Split on one monitor! by windows_help_mein techsupport

[–]voxAtrophia 0 points1 point ago

If you know which update, you should try to uninstall it. To find the update, open Windows Update, click View Update History on the sidebar. You will find a list of installed updates. It will most likely be something video related, but you might have to rollback them one at a time to find it.

You can use the regular Add/Remove programs to uninstalled it. On the sidebar, there will be a link to View Installed Updates. Find your update via the KB number and remove.

So what is the recommendation for a hard drive that has a bad block? by hammiesinkin techsupport

Yeah, just backup and replace the drive.

Just curious, what kind of hard drive was it? I've had a Western Digital Green drive fail recently, and I've noticed a few people here have similar problems. But it could just be a coincidence.

Celeron M vs Centrino by MuppetPastor666in 24hoursupport

[–]voxAtrophia 2 points3 points ago

Typically, laptop CPUs are part of the board and not user replaceable. However, I've heard of some that are, so you'll have to open it up and check.

I'm pretty sure Centrino isn't the name of the processor. It is actually either a Pentium or Celeron. Centrino is sortof a label that Intel gave to certain laptops when they used an Intel processor, Intel integrated GPU, and Intel wireless adapter.

If it is replaceable and it is compatible, it might not make a ton of difference. It's hard to say, but I doubt it would be as big as when you upgraded the RAM.

Why do people criticize stores like Walmart for destroying competition by lowering prices, when Steam does something very similar? by Qbeckin truegaming

[–]voxAtrophia 130 points131 points ago

First of all, people do criticize Steam all the time.

Second, people often criticize Walmart for things besides the low prices. They mention how they fight unionizing, the low wages for workers, how they bully manufacturers and suppliers, etc.

Any tips on increasing internet speed? (Speedtest image in text) by DingleyTimin techsupport

[–]voxAtrophia 0 points1 point ago

First of all, what speed are you paying for? That will determine if you are actually experiencing any problems, or just getting what you paid for.

If, for example, you are paying for 5Mbps and only getting 0.5 then that's a problem. First thing you'll have to do is disconnect any routers between you and the internet connection. So you will just plug an ethernet cable straight from the modem to your computer.

Then you'll want to find the official speedtest app from your ISP. Most ISPs have a regional page that should give you the most accurate reading. (A speedtest.net test means nothing to an ISP.)

If you are still having problems, just to be on the safe side, run an virus and malware scan. Maybe something is stealing bandwidth. It's unlikely, but might as well cover your bases.

And if you are still having problems, contact your ISP and let them know the problem and how long it has been going on. They'll probably have to send a technician to go out and check for any problems.

I'm moving to Bakersfield. Can you give me idea which neighborhoods are the nicer and safer ones? by NothingIsOriginalin Bakersfield

[–]voxAtrophia 0 points1 point ago

Well, you'll want to look north of KMC. As soon as you drive down Mt. Vernon Ave. you'll know why. But Bakersfield College is pretty close by and there are some decent apartment complexes near there, and they are right in that range.

I live around that area, not in an apartment, but it is pretty nice.
