You have cramps and bring Midol? You can get expelled if you don't have the proper paperwork. Don't even think of taking a decongestant if you have a cold. That'd better have a doctor's note and a parent's sign off, buddy.

The same kind of crazy happens around food allergies. My daughter was told she could not hand out her valentines because they had small packages of gummy bears stapled to them. When my wife went in to seek permission, she was told that the specific brand of gummies wasn't not the list, although another brand was.

Upon further questioning, the nurse said "we have to be careful about peanut allergies and gluten intolerances." My wife pointed out that the packaging said "100% Gluten Free" and "Product is free of ground and tree nuts." The nurse told her, "You can't be too careful."

My daughter, who had spent three nights illustrating the valentines and writing personal notes to each of her 25 classmates was very sad indeed.
