really, storage of energy is just as big a problem. solar, especially. If we can harness solar even over a couple days, that's going to be awesome. The current power grid is all on-demand, though, which is going to have to change.

WHY AREN'T THEY PLAYING WITH HIM!?!

How I feel when reading anything police related on Reddit... by drink_ALLtheCOFFEEin AdviceAnimals

[–]vermicin 0 points1 point ago

Every interaction I've had with cops has been positive. Every single one.

But I still don't want to talk to them any more than absolutely necessary, nor do I want to hang out near them.

First, I know the kinds of kids from my high school that went on to become cops. They weren't exactly friendly to people not in their clique. Maybe not outright violent, but certainly the bullies. And even if their friend was completely wrong and a total asshole, they will defend him with their life at the drop of a hat. I imagine that becomes even truer when their clique becomes "people with a badge." Second, police have this unique ability to fuck your shit up for life. Car dash cam tapes have a way of "disappearing." In fact, in Seattle, the laws are set up so that all dash cam tapes can legally be destroyed before they're legally required to make them available to the public. Their justification was something like, "It would just make people angrier at us." Great, that's really confidence inspiring. And what happens when you fight back with a cop? Even if he's off-duty, you can pretty much kiss your life goodbye. Get arrested for one thing, and question his judgement of the action? Oh, you're also resisting arrest. Even if the original charge doesn't stick, you're still going to get a criminal record. Refuse to show ID when you're legally not required to? They'll still lock you up for the night, and maybe rough you up a bit.

And if you come out claiming police brutality, a big pile of people will just roll their eyes and think, "yeah, sure. what did you actually do to deserve it?"

1/3 cops who do wrong are convicted

So your idea of "facts" go right out the window. If they did wrong, they are convicted. Otherwise, how do you know they actually did wrong, as opposed to a perceived wrong?

And how often are cases covered up or "disappeared" or not brought to light due to lack of funds?

Sorry, I like almost every cop I've ever interacted with, but their ability to fuck your entire life up because you took too long to show your papers is, in my mind, an unreasonable amount of risk.

What are your tips for scoring the exit row? by ribfeastin tall

[–]vermicin 1 point2 points ago

that doesn't work here anymore. now that most airlines offer check-in 24 hrs before the flight, AND seat selection, all the exit row seats are taken approximately 18 seconds after the 24 hour threshold is hit.

and then it's all 5'2" people leg wrestling in there..

Why is this not an Olympic sport? by digital_dogfoodin videos

[–]vermicin 2 points3 points ago

which is how ice skating competitions got so boring, and why "ice dancing' is now a sport. They made the scoring standardized enough that there's no artistry left in it anymore. and you see this same bitchfest of judge favoritism in ice dancing, but at least people kind of know what they're signing up for. art is very hard to objectively score.

[–]vermicin 17 points18 points ago

if it's not black tie or a funeral or a wedding, don't do it. I would argue that a prom or night on the town could also be appropriate for a black suit. It's certainly not day wear.

Is there a cheaper alternative (sub-$200) to the Alden Indy boot? by FlyingSandvichin malefashionadvice

[–]vermicin 2 points3 points ago

the LEC is also a fairly cheap boot. The leather looks slightly plasticky, the heel "painting" flakes off quickly, and the metal quick-lace loops are a bit shoddy.

That said, for the price I got them, they're a FANTASTIC boot to have around. I got black, as I didn't have any black boots, and my complaints are really only known to me. From afar, most people aren't judging the leather quality (and it looks far less plasticky as it wears). The only real issue is that scuffing the shoe revels a gray-ish layer underneath. SThey're not going to last more than a couple years, at which point I'll probably pick up the real thing.

Inside a "honey comb" whiskey barrel -- for "aging" whiskey quicker. by RustyPipesin alcohol

[–]vermicin 0 points1 point ago

I will admit my own inexperience in that department, but I was just curious if there was a quantifiable instead of qualitative difference :) I remember hearing of japanese techniques to do a radiator-style arrangement (tons of ultra-flat strips) of wood inside a barrel that's being pulsed with micro vibrations, getting great results in just a couple weeks. I'm curious if a blind taste test could tell the difference reliably.

Thunderbolt ports can transfer wired internet. I am doing that RIGHT NOW. You plug the ethernet into the cinema display, then the thunderbolt into your MBP, bam! wired internet.

I think apple succeeds because when it's "hardly any space" now, it's paving the way for the future.

the same argument was made for floppy drives and serial ports and parallel ports.

[–]vermicin 2 points3 points ago*

I'd be curious to know what, exactly, happens to a whisky "over time" that doesn't happen with increased wood contact. Evaporation is the only thing that comes to mind. But a white dog whisky is pretty much a raw spirit.

Even home-aging kits tout the smaller barrel size as the reason you don't need to age it as long. It seems like if you increase surface area of wood available, it would have the same effect as aging for a longer time period.

EDIT: I was looking at this document that explains the aging process. From that document:

However, this six-to-eight-years applies to 53-gallon barrels. If a different sized barrel is used then the dynamics change, and values like length of time in the barrel, the rate at which lignin and vanillins are extracted, etc are completely different. The reason for this is volume increases by a power of 3 relative to the dimensions, while surface area only in- creases by a power of 2 relative to the dimensions. That is to say, the amount of surface area of wood per gallon of spirit is greater in a smaller barrel and less in a bigger barrel.

So, if a distiller aged his/her whiskey in 5-gallon barrels rather than 53-gallon ones, there would be a considerably greater surface area of wood exposed to a gallon of spirit than in a 53-gallon barrel. And, the whiskey ages much faster.

Smaller barrels age the whiskey faster and impart lignin and vanillin, and also tannin, faster as well. And, a good-quality bourbon can be aged out in only three to six months in a 5-gallon barrel. In fact, any longer and the whiskey would go over the top and become astringent and bitter.

It’s important to note that the flavor profile is a little different for a whiskey aged in a smaller barrel, but not a difference that is necessarily inferior or superior. Also, the angels’ share is greater for a smaller barrel, but this is amply mitigated by the dramatically shorter aging time.

Smaller barrels are much more expensive and take up more space in the warehouse than larger ones per unit capacity. For example, ten 5-gallon barrels would take up a lot more warehouse space than one 53-gallon barrel, and they would cost a lot more.

It seems like cost and storage would be the factor for any large-scale production, and not anything that inherently changes with longer time frames.
