AFP client for Windows? by ctphillipsin mac

[–]unclerage 0 points1 point ago

You're welcome -- although at best, I only offered up some anecdotal support. ;D

Here's a nice write up on mixed protocols

The primary focus appears to be hiding Mac specific files (dot files, directory trashes, etc...) so that they don't clutter up the directory when accessed via a Windows user.

Interesting (win-sshfs). I'm wiped from the week, so pardon my lazy brain -- but did FUSE (for Windows) never really take off, is this a forked project or just a parallel project? Thanks for the link, regardless. Once my brain congeals a bit, I'll take a closer look. I've got a new build this weekend to contend with, so it's a perfect time to play around.

AFP client for Windows? by ctphillipsin mac

[–]unclerage 1 point2 points ago

I've got a FreeNAS (7, not upgrading to 8 until features catch up) server storing over 6 TB of data.

On the client side, I'm running an old hard modded Xbox on a projector for XBMC, a jailbroken ATV2 for Netflix and XBMC, an iMac, Mac Mini Server, my workstation (hackintosh running Lion, Snow Leopard and Win 7 and too many Win/Nix VM's to count), my work MBP, my girlfriend's Win 7 box and a few other oddball projects (laptop rebuilds, test boxes, etc... all of those being Win XP, 7, 8 beta and Linux variants).

I do have a couple of AFP specific shares (rsync repositories primarily for backup of work laptop, workstation and iMac); all media shares, though, are offered via AFP and SMB for all devices.

That FreeNAS box (well, the drives and the USB flash the system is installed on, hardware has changed a couple of times) has been my file storage backbone for over 4 years.

I have had zero problems.

I've never read the concern of SMB and AFP simultaneously invoked on a single drive/directory (not doubting you -- I just somehow missed it) -- I do recall a stated opinion that on a Mac, you should choose AFP over SMB due to poor performance.

I can offer this, though -- I'm an Apple sysadmin by trade, 90% of my shares at work (over a thousand Macs, nearly four thousand iPads utilizing WebDAV) are combination AFP/SMB shares. But choosing a protocol over another is not the same as enabling.

For what it's worth, Apple makes no concern about mixed share protocols. Performance of SMB on a Mac is substandard to Windows and Nix variants but it matters little; on a Mac, you merely '⌘-k: afp://' instead of '⌘-k smb://'. but on X Server, you always have the ability to enable SMB on a native AFP share with a single click.

Perhaps something is different with 8 than 7 (I still view 8 too bleeding edge and feature lacking compared to 7... granted, my go to distro is Debian, so grains of salt are freely available); but I can report zero issues myself.

Finally -- check the FreeNAS forums and mailing lists. You'll get a much better range of feedback there.

Good luck!

Lion or Lion Server? by zero__coolin mac

[–]unclerage 0 points1 point ago

Disclaimer: I'm an Apple systems administrator, I'm not throwing an obscene amount of systems up to brag.

I'm running 10.7 on a Mini Server and Hackintosh at home. At work, on a Mac Pro, 6 Mini Servers and an iMac and it's the primary install on my MBP. My Xserves are still 10.6, but that's just because I won't upgrade production, "must have" servers in the middle of a school year.

Next week, I'll be upgrading two 10.6 labs for final production tests in the field before a full district upgrade to 10.7 this summer.

I have no real complaints except for one glaring frustration: Full screen apps with dual monitors is pointless (primary monitor becomes a full screen, second monitor becomes textured background useless whatzit).

On the side, I'm a musician. Initially, I was quite concerned about a couple of firewire components (M-Audio Firewire Audiophile and an Alesis iO 14). M-Audio put out 10.7 compatible drivers for the Audiophile pretty fast (much faster than they did for 10.6), and while Alesis has not, it works just fine. I've had no issues with any of my other components (Roland GR-55 & VG-99, Line 6 Pod XT Live, Behringer USB Mixer nor my USB/MIDI keyboard).

Lion brings some nice things to the table (it took me about an hour or so to become an absolute fan of the "reverse scrolling" -- so much so that I'm annoyed dealing with "normal" trackpads now). I was sure I was going to detest Mission Control, but it's surprisingly intuitive and visually a bit of fun. Launchpad is a pointless bit of stupidity (really, why do I need another app launcher, especially when Alfred does everything I could need).

iTerm remains the best terminal replacement, especially if you want solid multi-panelled terminal sessions; Lion's bastardization makes no sense what so ever (what is the bloody point of allowing me to panel a terminal if it kills the first session?).

If you have any PPC coded apps, you're out of luck as Rosetta is a thing of the past (annoying when I run across something older that I want to tinker with).

As to the choice of 10.7 client vs. 10.7 server, you have to ask yourself what you're looking for in a server environment. There is zero visual difference between the two (10.7 server itself is merely a downloadable add-on to the client) and with services turned off, there's almost no impact. If all you're looking for is a LAMP install, consider MAMP/XAMPP. Furthermore, if MySQL is important for you, understand you'll need to install it separately as Apple yanked MySQL in favour of PostreSQL.

If you're okay with the extra coin to familiarize yourself/expand your horizons... it's a worthwhile procedure. Just make sure to find a couple of guides for initial setup (your system is going to want to be a DNS server by default, which is a lot of fun on your own network... you just need to understand and configure everything properly). Also, if you have any iOS devices, profile manager is an interesting addition to managing them.

A lot of people (myself included) will tell you that Apple is exiting the enterprise market with 10.7 Server. It is a workgroup server at best. Much of what is lacking, though, is the hardware to run it on. If you're willing to forego front end widgets and buttons and dig under the hood and get a little dirty (read: manually update some old versions of necessary software) and are comfortable on the command line; most of what appears to be missing from older OS X Server is still actually there. That said, it's clear this is the server release AFTER they killed off the rackmount servers...

Finally, for what it's worth... I'm far from an Apple fan boy (you should read the scathing email I just fired off to my department head and several others concerning Apple's reprehensible enterprise philosophies). But I still prefer it as my personal OS (and I'm a long time Linux, BSD and Windows supporter).

Sorry, rambling; I just don't much care for the "Lion went all iOS!". It hasn't (neither has 10.8, but NDA says I can't really talk about that). It's still the most attractive consumer minded Unix workstation OS on the market, very extensible, has loads of solid unixy goodness under the hood and is visually pleasing.

If anything, consider this: 10.8 comes out at the end of summer and that means that 10.6 is going the way of the dinosaur. So, you're going to have to move up sometime...

How I feel when someone tells me to "just get over" my depression: by max13007in funny

[–]unclerage 0 points1 point ago

Depression is a tremendous strain on both sides, no doubt.

Trying to be a support system when it appears that no amount of support will do any good is a draining experience. I hope you're not shouldering that alone and that you give yourself some space. Your friend is very fortunate.

Exercise is always a good idea. It's hard when something so simple can be such an effort (I know I'm better when I'm exercising; but it's such a difficult thing when I'm already expending every ounce of energy I have to force myself to deal with the basic requirements of providing for myself) -- then comes the the subsequent side effects of not being active (weight gain, feeling the results of a poor diet, even lower energy...). It can be a real vicious cycle.

Good luck, mate -- to you and your friend.

I didn't downvote you.

I've downvoted exactly three people during the two years I've participated in Reddit, precisely because voicing and considering differing opinions is the entire point of a discussion forum.

But thanks for the condescending reminder of proper etiquette. Edit A tad dickheaded of me, too. Hope yr hangover free. :)

[–]unclerage 8 points9 points ago

Please don't do this.

I'm glad it works for you, truly. That's great. But it does not work for everyone and can have some pretty unsavory side effects depending on what is going on (chemically) in someone's brain as well as having negative interactions with other things being taken.

Discuss what's going on with your GP. Be completely honest about your state of mind, length of depression, severity, cycles (if any), etc... Don't hide anything. Ask for advice as to whether it's a good idea.

It is always wise to discuss and inform your GP concerning something you are taking (or planning to take) that will become a regiment as to your physical or mental health.

This from someone who suffers from chronic depression for the better part of twenty five years.

Help persuading boss to convert to mac environment for web/app dev by gigglebot3000in mac

[–]unclerage 1 point2 points ago*

Devil's advocate: (I manage over 3000 Apple devices (iOS and OS X) across a city wide WAN).

Inventory software currently used, are there Mac alternatives for all required apps? (No, I am being serious. Does the company rely in seamless Sharepoint usage? It might be more than, "We use CSn")

How many workstations (desktops/laptops) are in play? What means of deployment and ongoing management are you going to implement? Will you plan on extending the current AD schema to properly manage OS X clients? Implement OD for a dual directory environment? Migrate to Apple's new preference of profiles? Implement a third party solution?

For deployment, you're going to need to consider your infrastructure. Netboot and SUS are terms to lookup. Are there multiple subnets on the network (if so, Netbooting will take a bit of extra planning to properly implement). You really do not want to just "install all the things" over the internet as Apple suggests with their new policy of zero install media.

Is the support person(s) up to speed on the transition? We have ten field technicians and the Macs here predate me by five or six years. Still, due to, "I don't know Macs", I wind up spending 60% of my time going into the field for things as silly as unplugged ethernet cables, missing keyboards and mice (because techs can't grok plugging a Dell keyboard into a Mac...), etc...

How are you going to migrate user accounts and data?

If you're talking about a small shop (1-50 systems), you can build a fairly robust migration path pretty quick; but there's a lot more to consider than just throwing systems on desks.

I'll also drop this on the table; end support from Apple (from purchasing down the line) is NOT as straight forward or business friendly as they might have been receiving from Dell, Lenovo or HP. Things you would come to expect from enterprise support simply go ignored on Apple's side. (Honestly, and simply put... Apple has 100 billion in their war chest from end user sales. They may talk about enterprise support, but they do not walk it.)

Why did you pick the style you're playing rihgt now? by Dinimuetterin Guitar

[–]unclerage 0 points1 point ago

I've never known another way of playing, so I it works out... I suppose.

I approximate finger picking by arpeggiating chords. It's not the same, but it's close enough that I can pass it off; and fortunately, I arpeggiate like a fiend.

I got lucky, I think. I saw Vernon Reid play live in '88 (Living Colour's tour for Vivid) and his style was very forearm centric. I had a brief chance to speak with him after the show and he was just so positive and encouraging I realized that it was all about desire, not limitation.

That sounds a lot grander than I intended it to. Just dig what you do, I guess. :)

[–]unclerage 0 points1 point ago

I'm missing my right hand at the wrist. I can only play the way I play. ;P

Truth be told, I find myself enjoying the acoustic more (overall flavour is different, even when comparing it to modeling; but it's more than that. There's a comfortable shoes vibe that a true acoustic gives that is unmatched in an electric), but the skull crushing face stomp or twisted g-string donned stripper serenade that I get from the electric keeps me coming back for more.

It's the IIgs port that is offered inside the iPad's Diablo-esque Bard's Tale.

The save option recommendeds Slot 5, Drive 1, but the options for both Slot 5 and 6 are available.

I'm guessing they based it on KEGS as there is a port available for iOS.

TextureCraft: A new subreddit for creating and critiquing texturepacks. Let's make it grow! by yeshualynnin Minecraft

[–]unclerage 0 points1 point ago

Not to mention, a thriving community over at minecraftforum.net (where all of these links seem to go...).

Subreddits are great for like-minded conversation, but recreating the wheel in an attempt to turn Reddit into a hive mind strip mall doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Minecraft Forums has a large, active community for a reason; they're all specifically discussing Minecraft. And there is an active area specific to texture packs with relavant discussions related to creation of them. Why not just participate in what is working well?

Of course, I'm not the internet police; carry on with what makes you happy.

I think it's a signal to noise issue.

Call of Cthulhu Dark Corners of the Earth was solid in plot (of course, it was also heavily based on Shadow over Innsmouth; so it did require an appreciation for Lovecraft).

A good portion of the Ultima games (IV, V, VI, VII), retell respectably outside of gameplay. Fallout 1 & 2 (sans fantastic game play) would have made a relatively good short story.

Below the Root, a handful of Infocom's original catalog, KOTOR, Myst, Gabriel Knight... I'm sure if I sat and thought about it long enough, it'd be possible to put together a very respectable fan fiction old time radio podcast series based on game plots, a la ARTC (actually, that sounds like fun).

I'm not staking a side opposite yours, per se; I just think it comes down to presentation and dedication. When a developer has the latitude to explore their artistic inclinations (or a literary or cultural source has been allowed to be properly adapted), it can work. But, you're right in that it's mostly really bad tv at best.

[–]unclerage 0 points1 point ago

A lot of posts here and trying to search for what I want to say isn't proving the easiest thing to do. If it's already been said (or you've already considered it, apologies and good for all).

The one part I noticed was the "parents & friends" discussion. I am the first to agree, it's no one else's business, but that isn't the way life always works.

This is a conversation that the two of you need to have now. Who (if anyone) is going to know? Decide now and stick with your guns.

People are odd creatures, if you decide not to tell your family now, what happens if she later decides, "I need to be honest!"? You now have the strain of re-acquiring acceptance from people that will have become important in her life. (To be clear -- I understand if you love each other, no one else matters and all that. But you have to be fair to ALL the people you love -- and that in times of need, you rely upon).

You might both be best if no one knows and from a self worth standpoint, she might well hit a point in her life where the acceptance (and support) for decisions become important as well. Point is, once you're at your personal "This is where I stand" place, it would be a good idea to sit down and have an honest, loving and serious conversation about how you move forward. The wisest words I have ever heard is to begin as you intend to carry on. It keeps things simple.

As for friends... well, fuck friends. They have more than enough sitting in their closets that they haven't opened up to you about (and you probably don't want to know). Trust me. Kevin is into some seriously weird shit. Be glad he doesn't bring it up over coffee.

Best of luck to you, both. Love is a rare thing, make lots of it.

[–]unclerage 3 points4 points ago

I'll apologize in advance for this; I'm living up to my name tonight. Blame the bourbon and an unseasonably bad day.

Who uses Macs lol

I fucking do.

I'm the Apple systems admin for a pretty large school district (54 schools); I got the job after building a network deployment framework to deploy Macs from a centralized location across 54 subnets. My systems netboot, reimage and update over my infrastructure.

I deploy software at request, in real time for thousands of users all day long, troubleshoot problems and keep my teachers and students happy.

There are ten field technicians that support the Windows boxes. Not a single one of them can even remember how to bind a Mac to AD... much less open a terminal and check disk usage, network status or mount a share. I wind up shelling into the field to do their job on top of mine because "Macs are toys."

Funniest part is. The 'loser' Mac labs? They're the ones with Eclipse installed, not the Dells. They're the ones with kids learning vi and emacs. They're the ones where Python is part of the curriculum and kids are learning that screen means a hell of a lot more than "the thing you look at".

The Windows labs? Primarily used for Word and browsing Youtube all fucking day. Oh yeah, there's a reason to feel superior.

Apple may annoy the shit out of all of us with their hipster bullshit , but OS X itself is a lovely Unix box with high quality third party commercial software running side by side with decades worth of time proven command line tools.

So, save your psuedo-elitist, proletariat Windows bullshit. They're all fucking computers, simply tools for a purpose. Like the possibility that the tools (all of them, Windows, Mac, Linux, etc...) offer and stop propagating pointless platform bigotry.

That said, yes. The majority of "Mac users" annoy the shit out of me, too. But so do "Windows users". And back to the topic at hand, only a fucking moron doesn't bother to hit a search engine before they type random code into a non-sandboxed environment. Shit flinging monkey Jesus, don't you even want to know what the fuck the rm stands for, what / means or why there's an -rf behind it? If someone told you to rub icy hot on your wanker, would you do it without a moment's consideration?

Fuck this. Back to the bottle of 1792, annoying the neighbors with a cacophony of Last Poets, Tom Waits and Slayer and being put off that my girlfriend isn't here to attend to my needy cock.
