TROPHY CASE

I still think they should play this in the beginning of every movie at the theater... by zeryin videos

[–]unbibium 1 point2 points ago

We used to have a local theater that would show this before the Rocky Horror Picture Show, and also [John Waters' No Smoking announcement|http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YnpofBtijF8].

Much to my surprise, when I saw National Treasure 2 there for $2, they showed a Disney cartoon before the movie, one of those hygiene film satires where Goofy was trying to install an HDTV.

I do notice he goes off on those "bomb Germany again" rants whenever he's been watching the History Channel. By holding a grudge against Germany, he's making the same mistake his liberal mother would make when she'd watch Roots and hold a grudge against America.

You'd probably just have to use SeaLab 2021 rules: the fort always gets destroyed at the end, and resets the following week.

This articulates an important hang-up of trying to become more sociable that I've never really thought of before. by Mike_V1114in bestof

[–]unbibium 2 points3 points ago

It sounds like she's not telling a story, but giving a debriefing.

I know of other modes of social interaction that are talkative, but excruciating. One friend of mine is all about the hypothetical question. "If you had a million dollars, what science project would you fund?" and so forth. I'm not good at answering those; it feels like homework. I can see why she does it, though: "open ended questions" are the kind of thing people recommend when giving advice. And if she already has her own answer loaded, she doesn't have to worry about what to say next.

Adam seems to have his head up his ass regarding other countries.

When people ask him to not blame the civilians for the conditions in the Middle East, but to blame instead the despotic leadership, he asks "what part of Canada did they get the leaders from?" He's implying that the leaders are drawn from the same pool of people that have to drive cabs and work for a living. He forgets that in other countries, power might be tightly consolidated to a royal family, high party officials, and/or the upper echelons of the clergy. And he hasn't updated his opinion to reflect the Arab Spring, in which the people are indeed rising up to cast off their fundamentalist leadership, at great risk to their own lives and with no guarantee of success.

On the whole, we make more social progress than they do, because in our country, we're allowed to criticize, and our leaders are constantly facing some sort of opposition. As long as that one thing is true, we'll be better off. But we're better off in other ways as well, in ways as simple as the act of going to a bar, having a cold beer, and meeting a single woman. In some neighborhoods, she might have even walked to the bar herself without enduring anything more rude than a cat call. And there is a generation of young men and women in Saudi Arabia who wish they had that opportunity.

But, despite our progress, our politicians are still these weird sociopathic robot-people, and not really a cross-section of our citizenry. Thanks to our progress, they don't really thrive when they focus on stoning adulterers to death, or persecuting Jews, or forbidding women to drive. But, since we have a lot of old and frightened voters, and a powerful religious lobby, they still seem to devote a lot of resources to putting pot smokers in prison, and keeping nipple slips off broadcast TV. I'm sure Adam would hate to be visiting Amsterdam and be constantly hassled about the legendary American fear of pot and breasts. Since he's a citizen of Los Angeles, California, would they be afraid he came to Europe to spread his agenda of draconian parking enforcement and graffiti on every street sign, and breed a generation of building inspectors?

As time has gone by, the Man has always kept you down, and your pirate ship has always steered true. Are you going to make more of your future projects independently?

For example, if you're shooting a pilot, I'm sure you could find competent actors, studios, and technicians in Phoenix for a fraction of the cost, and enthusiastically too. With the cost savings, instead of begging the studios to shoot it for you, you could have a few of your celebrity friends make a smaller investment. You'd then shop it to TBS and displace one of those Tyler Perry shows. Have you ever had Dixon run the numbers on something like that?

I was also surprised that your animated Bircham pilot stories revolved around stuff coming back from Korea. Maybe the network studios insist on doing it that way, but I've heard of so many cartoons on cable stations doing their animation in-house on computers, which seems more in-line with your philosophy. I figured you would have hired Michael "Grand Theft Submarine" Narren and put a few grunts under him to do the lip-sync, background, and sound effects.

I suppose I'm just eager to hear about if the pirate ship is going to be invading any other harbors.

How to avoid that oh so hated Facebook Spam without completely blocking your friends. by Crazedgoalie56in LifeProTips

[–]unbibium 4 points5 points ago

Indeed. And usually the spam posts are from a "funny images" group, which could be filtered individually if there were an option for it. The ones i see the most have names like "the secret to humor is surprise" (full of obvious humor) and "Did I Piss You Off?" (randomly offensive or NSFW).

The Pizza-Ordering Fridge Magnet - VIP Fridge Magnet allows you to press a button and, before you know it, enjoy a freshly delivered pizza within minutes. by fff4mein gadgets

[–]unbibium 0 points1 point ago

In the United States, "within minutes" probably means "within 45 minutes" rather than "within 10 minutes". And there are some chains like Little Caesars where they have a stack of "hot-and-ready" pizzas in the 3 most common configurations that you can just waltz in and buy off the shelf, so that cuts out the prep time right there.

But notice that this story is from Dubai, which changes everything. A "priority" customer in my town might own a bunch of real estate and order for a big party during all the football games. A "priority" customer in Dubai is the son of an oil magnate living in a seven-star hotel suite. Imagine these are your customers, and name your price.

It seems to be a cop-out comment that everyone uses and I'll never understand why. It's either stoners who are trying to claim a connection with people who actually did something with their lives, or teetotalers who are trying to claim superiority over people who actually did something with their lives.

[–]unbibium 2 points3 points ago

If you think pranks are funny, go rent/see Penn & Teller Get Killed. (Netflix doesn't have it but you can rent it through amazon video)

In real life, Penn & Teller don't prank each other, and the Mythbusters don't either, because when smart people prank, it escalates, and starts interfering with work. (I have to find that Penn/Adam Savage interview where they talked about this on the radio.)

[–]unbibium 2 points3 points ago

Except it's not really try "ue"s in a row. In the original French, it's a "qu" because that's the only way to do a /k/ sound before the letter "e", a "eu" representing the schwa sound, and a silent "e" that doesn't do anything. And that makes no sense in English orthography so we just pronounce it as the name of the letter "Q" but still keep the wacky spelling, because that's what our language does, except with "donut" for some reason.

I think it's inevitable that John Carter will do better on home video than in theaters. Maybe never wildly successful, but it'll get good ratings on Netflix and end up in people's recommendation lists a lot.
