Westboro Baptist Church showed up to protest Bob Bethell's funeral in my home town. This was the town's response. by AchieveDeficiencyin pics

I was in Spain when they won the world cup in 2010 and everone made a comment they had not seen so many flags since Franco.

So I guess it's about the same there, there's a kind of zeitgeist there where displaying the national flag individually is associated with fascism.

Japan’s Largest Solar Plant – Is Solar the New Nuclear? by CarolLoganin energy

[–]umibozu 4 points5 points ago

300M for 70MW is 4.2$/w A new nuclear must be around $4-5b for 2GW, so 2.5$/w

That's construction cost. Operation costs are much lower in solar, life expentancy is smaller too. time to market is much, much smaller in the solar too.

The big difference is that a 2GW nuclear gives you 2GW all the time, non stop. With solar, the output is irregular.

So nuclear seems to give the better bang for the buck but right now you have a really, really hard time building them (permits taking years if not decades, people opposing them, etc)

If you could improve the grid you could build many small plants, create many jobs for skilled workers (both operation and construction) and offset the irregular input (you'd need to mix up generation technologies as well) but grid initiatives are generally government plans and governments have no cash right now.

Pair a Ps3 controller to gnex? by sheepsleepdeepin GalaxyNexus

I have BT paired it with the sixaxis paid tool and it works fine as a controller for the couple emulators I have tried. Don't have Mupen64 but the rest work fine.

Working at Microsoft has its advantages by imawarioin geek

I distinctly remember buying E450s and E250s defaulting to 10Mbps NICs. I also remember them having all kinds of problems negotiating 100Mbps duplex with Cisco switches and me having to remote into each and every one of them and forcing the interface 100 full.

I also remember that version of solaris had a relatively small number of virtual interfaces per physical interface.

Sorry, I meant data center wise... I have 100Mbps at home and it's beyond my wildest dreams of only 4 years ago.

In fact, just 12 years ago, in 2000, buying fast ethernet (100Mbps) cards for Sun servers over the standard 10Mbps was such a premium you had to really look into what the thing was going to be used for to make a business case for it. So take me with a grain of salt :)

[–]umibozu 12 points13 points ago

not only that but it appears it's 10Gbps ethernet and switching backplanes all the way between the server and where the test was run so I'm even willing to bet it's most likely the same rack / access switch and a well designed newtorking backbone

After seeing my share of underperfoming backups not meeting their windows, one tends to not to underestimate the complexity of cabling and datapaths. Just one poor choice in fiber routes or not having enough "good" GBICs and it all goes down to 1Gbps or even the Mbps underworld

Just got bf3, I don't play online shooters, I know I will die, please be gentile? by Cragvisin ps3bf3

[–]umibozu 1 point2 points ago

using the right stick to correct aim while shooting is also a bad idea. it took me ages to figure this out but you're generally much better off just barely aiming and short bursting, letting the auto aim help you.

If I even touch ever-so-slightly the right nub while on 1-on-1, I die and the other fucker escapes with a less than 8% health.

I can very distinctly taste the bitterness of millions and millions of other men accross the western world that will still not have the balls to forward this to their wives and rub in a healthy "See? I told you so!"

I am sure we will still very vehemently deny we all pee in the same bathtub our spouses think immaculate and ever so free from any trace of urine.

Spanish government set to rescue ailing Bankia, hit by property falls by wirplitin Economics

The finance minister has only been on the job since late December.

Bankia is an old player with a new robe; they took on a lot of bad risk in the housing bubble and the're now €30b in the crapper.

Estimated cost of Florida's Levy County Nuclear project now $19-24 billion by lispmin energy

[–]umibozu 2 points3 points ago

I had a $5-6b figure in my mind for a new two GWe reactor nuclear plant so that would make it consistent with what you say.

still cheaper than a new nuclear carrier at $8-10b (granted, lots of pork there :)

I also have in mind $150b to completely remake the US grid and make it smart and fully redundant
