Killing and eating wild animals is unsustainable in the long run. If you want your children to live in a world of plenty like you have, get used to eating manufactured food.

I don't see how this is evidence against god. Seems to me you've awoken the wrath of Ahura Mazda, the ancient Zoroastrian god of Mazdas.

I'm not sure what you're referring to, here are stats on the past Humble Bundles and no bundle had an average price of under $4. There have been other "pay-what-you-want" indie bundles but these are by far the best known.

Also, slashing the price to $1/unit isn't a bad decision if you can increase sales enough to make up for it. With over 400k sales in a week, I really doubt anyone was disappointed with the community's generosity.

r/atheism I have a question. by daftpunkalivein atheism

[–]ultimatt42 0 points1 point ago

When you are studying any matter, or considering any philosophy, ask yourself only: what are the facts, and what is the truth that the facts bear out. Never let yourself be diverted, either by what you wish to believe, or what you think could have beneficent social effects if it were believed; but look only and solely at what are the facts.

So you would trust public education, the same system that has failed to teach your kid to do math or read above a 3rd grade level, to show them how to talk to God? You're not at ALL worried about the government telling your kids what to pray about? It wouldn't perhaps be better for your kids if YOU or YOUR CHURCH were the ones teaching them how to pray?

Message from an atheist: join us!! by asimbeyin atheism

I think MOST members of r/atheism are good about respecting others' beliefs. However, most members aren't browsing r/atheism/new and thus don't even see the vast majority of posts from non-atheists. 99% of the time they get downvoted into the negatives before they leave the new page, and the few that survive usually do so because they pander to our predictable tastes.

It's also unfortunate that a lot of the "anti-theist" types, the ones who just can't get enough religious debate and are always looking for a fight, are often the ones who browse r/atheism/new the most. So it's no surprise that we don't do a great job of convincing newcomers we're a friendly bunch when the welcoming party just wants to find another theist to humiliate.

IMO, another part of the problem is the new "everyone must read the FAQ before contributing" attitude. Ever since r/atheism was made a default sub, the top reply in such posts from newcomers is ALWAYS someone suggesting you read the FAQ. Which is fine (the FAQ usually does answer their question), but I think it's ruined our hospitality and damaged our public image. Maybe we can answer the question and politely refer them to our FAQ for further reading?

[–]ultimatt42 10 points11 points ago

I don't think anyone is making that assumption. The message I got was that, as a group often the victim of hate speech and hate crimes, we should be proactive in calling out such offenses against other groups. To do otherwise would be hypocritical. And besides, bringing this kind of behavior into the light of day is the best way to fight it.

If it ever does turn out to be atheists, you can bet r/atheism will be fucking livid. I will be, anyway.

My guess is it's not religiously motivated. Why suspect hate crime when drunk, obnoxious teenagers are far more likely? I bet some kid thought it would be funny to ride the Jesus.

The actual actual story behind that picture.

Monster Pig (or Pigzilla) was a controversial 2007 story that initially ran in the news media as a report (and a series of accompanying photographs) of an eleven-year-old boy shooting a giant feral pig. The pig was claimed to have been shot during a hunt on May 3, 2007 by an eleven-year-old boy named Jamison Stone. The location of the shooting was the Lost Creek Plantation, a commercial hunting preserve outside Anniston, Alabama, USA. According to the hunters (there were no independent witnesses), the pig weighed 1,051 pounds (477 kg) and 9 feet 4 inches (2.84 m) in length.

The story quickly ran into veracity problems with news organizations backing off on their coverage when inconsistencies in the story were revealed, including NBC, who canceled their interview with the Stone family last minute when they suspected the story was a hoax. It was pointed out right away that the photographs of the pig released to the media seemed to be purposely posed and doctored to exaggerate scale. It was later also revealed that the "giant feral hog" was a actually large domestic farm-raised pig named "Fred" that had been purchased by the hunting preserve's owner 4 days before the hunt in an apparent publicity stunt. There was a 2008 grand jury investigation of the event based on charges of animal cruelty that was later canceled.
