TROPHY CASE

A little physics problem - some lateral thinking required! by telescoperin Physics

[–]uhclem 2 points3 points ago

Newton's 3rd Law applies: For every force and action there is an equal and opposite force and reaction. The net effect of the car's momentum on the earth is zero, whichever way it's driven.

The net effect of the fuel on the atmosphere, however, is not zero. (/off topic)

What printer(s) have the lowest cost of ownership? by 3ricGin gadgets

[–]uhclem 9 points10 points ago

I'll toss in a word for Samsung: I bought a new ML2010 for $50 (Canadian); the toner costs about the same, and I get about 5000 pages per cartridge. I have a colour inkjet, but only use it for photos. Five years on, 4 cartridges, no problems.

Does food leave our body (poop) in the same order it went in (meals)? by Wasoomiin askscience

[–]uhclem 1 point2 points ago

People certainly believe it is. I've known bulimics who would start binging with a colored food (green liquorice) so that when they purged they'd know when they were done.

A handy flowchart to figure out what particle you are. by josephsmidtin Physics

I never really understood the modern quantum particle zoo before looking at that chart.

I still don't of course, but it was a very enjoyable chart nonetheless.

New Yorker on new illusions:

A blue star. And how it works is you stare at the blue star for thirty seconds and then you look at a blank sheet of paper and what you see is that you just wasted another goddam minute of your stupid life.

TIL that an anti-pornography film was banned due to pornographic content. by DiscoDmitriin todayilearned

Because it was an excerpt showing big hairy man approaching small girl, with loud heartbeat soundtrack. Didn't show the (implied) act itself

TIL that an anti-pornography film was banned due to pornographic content. by DiscoDmitriin todayilearned

[–]uhclem 50 points51 points ago

It was a manipulative nasty film, though that wasn't a reason to ban it. I served on a discussion group about it, so I got to study it: scenes of kiddie porn have a heart beat at 120 bpm superimposed as the sound track, so you'd feel excited and guilty. Demonizing is a useful tool for understanding, imho.

Yeah. First time was, as you say, no fun. Second time I told them that, and I have no memories of it at all. Ditto #3....

Or in a neat pile in an FBI office, more likely.

Jack Tramiel Remembered: The Legacy of the Commodore Founder and PC Pioneer by ScarlettMadiin entertainment

[–]uhclem 0 points1 point ago

C64 was my first computer, and I loved it until my software partner and I decided we had to work on the same machine, so I gave in and got a Mac 128k.

First friend I knew who had a home computer had a Commodore PET. Jack didn't know anything about computers, but he was a lawyer and knew how to ask questions, so when the salesman told him the PET came with 8k memory, he looked dubious and asked, "Is 8k enough?"

The salesman looks at him and says, "There is NOTHING you will ever do on a home computer that will need more than 8K."
