Something I noticed about the bridge level. by Zackariahin JourneyPS3

The shelters you hide in the snow and undersea levels are also the bodies of the war machines. When I saw the hieroglyphics of the wanderers riding those machines, my mind was blown.

Free pizza, but only if you can order it in Spanish. White conservative freaks out for his rights to a free pizza. by dragon_toesin SRSBusiness

There is sometimes some intragroup hate that goes on between Latinos. Between ones born here and assimilated vs. those who immigrated and are financially successful and unsympathetic vs. those who immigrated and are scraping by and are resentful vs. those trying to get in and everyone in between. It's complicated further by divisions over countries and cultures around their relationship to the USA. Cubans are very different than Puerto Ricans and Mexicans when it comes to politics, for example. We are not a united bloc by any stretch. Complicated to say the least.

That said. I can't speak for her, but the way she couched it here it seems more like a business strategy decision, something that she'd advise one of her clients in Nashville to do rather than a reflection of her own personal views. It wouldnt play well here, she might be saying, just like those shirts for sale at Sears.com with the punchy statements about Latinas didn't play well. Would love to ask her a follow up...

Yo, point of information, I don't think social change is not the point, like, in life as a whole. It's just not the point in SRS Prime.

I do the work here in SRSD, r/racism, some other friendlier reddits and in the posts where when it seems like people actually would be receptive to thinking about social change. (In addition to IRL, where the real battle happens, chums.) And there, I'm not as liable to just call someone out with .gifs of poop and ron paul and beep boops and praise gagas. The struggle looks a lot of different ways: angry, annoyed, reasoned, calculated, passionate, understanding, forgiving, compromising, loving, voices raised, frustrated, etc. etc. But it happens because it's a conversation, and it always moving forward.

But I'm not going to wade in with people who specifically get off on being offensive and disgusting and have been upvoted by their also gross community and have shown real attitude towards people who think they're being offensive. They have demonstrated that they are not interested in a conversation. They have demonstrated they don't give a shit about talking or listening. For those people, I'm just going to grab a beer with SRS and let off some steam.

But yes times a 1000 for everything else you said, spideyj. fist bump

Wait, who is blaming? Calling what someone says as shitbaggery might make someone feel bad, sure, but I'd wager that most people on the receiving end actually don't give a rat's ass. I've seen some rare instances of actually bullying over what someone said, but it's the exception, not the rule. And holding people accountable for saying horribly offensive things doesn't then mean that it is our fault for being offended, pointing out how offensive it is and (maybe, unlikely) making them feel bad about what they said.

I rarely see anyone who gets their poop highlighted on SRS actually feel crushed or devastated or get triggered into an highly emotional state that prevents them from continuing on Reddit. Most of the reaction I see are people who are like "fuck those [term for female gentials]" and "fuck u for not takin a joke" and "i'll do it again [n-word n-word n-word]"

I have seen SRS members get crushed or devastated or triggered in this way about the horribleness written (and upvoted) all over reddit. And I personally been there. And I've also taken the "let's talk this out" approach a lot — and still do. But this is venting because the emotions are too much to keep them inside. Sometimes it hurts so much all you can do is laugh.

Happens to my white friend who sells antiques up north. He looks like he'd be a good-ol-boy in his work clothes and hates when white people slip out some racism to see how he reacts, looking for approval. Happens all the time.

This is essentially the Tone Argument. That said: I believe you are arguing this in good faith, but it's definitely not been my experience to see posts in SRS of people who were "ignorant" or somehow "unaware" of what privilege means. Instead, I see the majority of jerking happening over posts that blatantly offensive, proud of how offensive they are, indignant at intra-subreddit comments about how offensive said post and unwilling to have an actual discussion or attempt to empathize a viewpoint that is not theirs.

That said, there could be a little more "you may or may not be a ___ ist, but what you said was ____ ist" (© Jay Smooth) — but the point of SRS is about circle jerking. Being outrageous is part of the M.O.

Oh btw: shouldn't this discussion be in SRSMeta? Not sure…

Free speech is a two-way street! drops mic

picks mic back up Actually, free speech (in the United States) is a protection from the government passing laws to curtail citizen's rights to free speech, with limited exceptions. A redditor is not prevented by any legal authority from posting most words, just as an SRSer is not prevented from calling it out as offensive and circle jerking all over it. One de facto "government", in this case, is reddit, inc., which has only drawn a line against content that they can legally be held responsible for or content they consider "problematic" or "toxic". One could also say that another de facto "government" is the system of up votes, or that of moderators.

Moderators are not by definition book-burners or anti-free-speech because of their role. Rather, it's an agreement that one enters into by posting into a subreddit. "I transfer away some of my protections of having rules imposed on what gets said in this space for the privilege of posting in a subreddit." If I don't wish to agree to said rules, I'm welcome to try and sway other people or create another subreddit. If I say something in violation of those rules, I'm liable to get banned, as that was the contract of being a potential member of a subreddit. It is a mild form of censorship, but it's not Censorship™ in the way we talk about it of a government, because it is not a systematic and powerful entity that prevents any form of dissent. I can still exist on Reddit, on the internet, and publish anything I want elsewhere, given it doesn't violate the forms of speech not protected by the First Amendment ensured to me as a citizen of the United States. YMMV outside of the USA.

Analogy time: Think about a literary magazine. If you submit a piece to the New Yorker, and they reject it outright — regardless of if they read it or not, or how great it actually was — does that make them censors? Are they preventing you from taking that piece and publishing it elsewhere? Do they own every magazine? No, no, no. They are being editors. Moderators are simply editors of a community, a community that has very public rules and a very particular behavior.

For SRS Prime, that means we c-jerk all over some really outrageous, offensive and nauseating behavior that happens elsewhere on reddit — mostly because if we didn't we might lose it and chuck the computer out of the window and have a giant aneurysm caused by a systematic, pervasive and powerful culture of privilege and the reaction of those who are unable or unwilling to empathize with that. There's a time (and place, hint hint, SRSD) for trying to help people understand why and have a good-faith discussion about how we can progress against some of this institutionalization. But there can also (free speech!) be a place for just cutting loose and being outlandish about our frustration in a very public place. Thank you for your time. puts mic back gently into the stand

I'm a minority and have been drunk out on the streets late at night in nicer neighborhoods in Brooklyn and Manhattan. I have never even had a run-in with a cop in 2 years. I once informed a cop about a kid who had a seizure at a park, and he went to go check it out but never stopped by a cop. YMMV, but it sounds like you will be fine.

Gotcha. I read Dave Cullen's book a while back about the shootings, and I couldn't remember what he said about the white supremacy connections. From what I just found, it wasn't about hating whites:

They were equal-opportunity haters, railing against minorities and whites, praising Hitler’s “final solution” — and then ranting against racism.

But let's not stop that from calling out the HAW HAW RACISM UPBOATS TO THE LEFT here on what should just be a WTF photo.

Holy shit, it gets even worse:

Okay, then something else is wrong. Men who are willing to have sex with someone are not necessarily willing to get involved... but they are usually willing to do twice what they have done once. Are perhaps bad in bed? Did you pressure them for commitments? Did they find out something else horrifying about you?

Taken 2 poster design. by JoeEshmadein design_critiques

Is the movie called Retaken or Taken 2? I really like the photo treatment, though it doesn't feel all that appropriate for the tone of the film... I'd also edit out of of the type. The director name looks like an afterthought. The quote is nearly unreadable, and feels like an awkward amount of type to read on a poster. I'd put a month, not Autumn. Or at least Fall.
