New to all martial arts and looking to demo a few places. What should I look for? by ClimacticGalacticin martialarts

[–]tontomurphy 0 points1 point ago

All I was talking about was the Ki aspect, and didn't want him dissuaded because of that.

You may have been more interested in the intensity/sparring/tournaments but I wasn't able to glean that from the post I responded to.

As to your questions, I've never participated in an Aikido tournament and we do spar regularly, although it's really within an Aikido context so it's understandable that those outside of Aikido wouldn't view it as such.

Not all aikido schools talk about ki/chi/superpowers. Depends on the teacher.

Quick discussion on 'types' of jobs and how not to scare college students away from networking by seanx820in networking

[–]tontomurphy 1 point2 points ago

A lot of the engineering subreddits seem to revolve around talking about how awesome it is to be an engineer and how those without degrees couldn't possibly know as much. Those who have various qualifications basically don't want others to devalue what they (may) have learned in college.

To the males here, what would you do in this situation? by sto79bein martialarts

[–]tontomurphy 4 points5 points ago

In this specific instance, some basic aikido would've been quite useful. By grabbing and holding on, it would've given you a good opportunity to control her, unbalance her and put her between you and the other assailant. The best part is that to onlookers it shouldn't look like aggression on your part.

any tips from martial arts practitioners with flat feet? by ch_bu13in martialarts

[–]tontomurphy 3 points4 points ago

Maybe this is bull but there are a few barefoot runners who've said that walking/running barefoot has helped build up the muscles in their arch and gone from flat feet to having an arch. Might be worth looking into it.

Donovan Speaking Irish Gaeilge by mezzofantiin gaeilge

[–]tontomurphy 0 points1 point ago

The post I responded had an unfair critique of the Irish of the OP. I'm sure the intent was fair and friendly but the content was at best incorrect and at worst nit-picking. I've clarified my thoughts and defended the OP pronunciation subsequently and it's there for people to agree with or disagree with.

Now to my alleged post modern fallacies. You are trying to change the discussion by attempting to bind two separate arguments. The only reason a person would normally do this is if their original position was Weak (which I didn't think yours was) or if they're trying to create a me rational vs you irrational argument.

Just because I pronounce some words differently to some other people and I argue the validity of mine doesn't mean that I support homeopathy or I am anti-science. You are using these of course as your audience will be anti homeopathy and pro science. By linking these, you seek to undermine my rationality and character. It's also a cheap way of arguing because you're not discussing the point in dispute

If you wish to discuss further your views on pronunciation, then I'm quite willing to listen, but this thread has quickly spiralled into name calling wrapped in pseudo-intellectual gibberish.

I agree that just because a person hears something often enough, doesn't mean that it's correct. I think it's cool that your academic life includes Irish so i'm not trying to get thick or anything.

I'm from Munster (believe it or not) so what I have always used and been taught is the Gay-el though as you said, more gutturally. Theres no one I know that uses that guttural sound all the time, as a language book might dictate. Gwail is something I only hear on RTÉ and to me it sounds "wrong". Obviously it's not though because I've heard it enough to know it's pronounced that way in other regions.

As to your second point, in the middle of the word…………………..yeah, you're right. The emphasis is (slightly) put on an li sound instead of an il sound in the video.

But…..when he says Gaeilge, he's as close to correct as makes no difference, especially because it's a language, and people do have variations in the way they speak. Your tutor may have strict pronunciation instructions for your course and from an academic perspective i'm sure he's right but you're really splitting hairs and I seriously doubt that if you were speaking to someone in Irish, that you would pull them up on equivalent variations.

I've a friend from the midlands that when he says horse it sounds like hearse. The first time he said it in a sentence, I really couldn't figure out what he was saying because I couldn't figure out how a hearse could fit into the context of what we were talking about. There's such a variation in the english language between north and south dublin……..well you get my point!

In an academic environment, we'd all have variations in the english language that using the same criteria. Living, spoken languages have regional variations. They are not wrong (except if you say horse like hearse).

His pronunciation is spot on.

Its worth looking at what you're eating as well. I know this is anecdotal but I did some travelling years ago and my diet switch from the normal western diet to mostly rice/fish/fruit and almost no processed foods. I wore the same sandals all day everyday. I went from sandals that I had to clean foot gunk off every few days to wearing them for months all day long with no unpleasant odours/gunk.

[–]tontomurphy 0 points1 point ago

Yes, yes it is.

You may be not familiar with the pronunciation but it is as valid as yours. It's the one I've grown up with.

Even if you claimed to be a gaeilgeoir from bearna, dingle or some other Gaeltacht area that doesn't mean you are a authority on how it's pronounced across the country.

Take fine Gael. I've heard fineh Ga-el, fineh gwail, fineh gale,

Aikido and the Structure of the Universe - Ichirei Shikon Sangen Hachiriki by Sangenkaiin aikido

[–]tontomurphy 0 points1 point ago

This kind of stuff is not particularly unusual in aikido. Shihan Robert Nadeau talks a lot about aikido being an art of transformation, using the art to move through different "levels" and become more in tune with the universe. As I understand it, he says practising aikido in a physical sense i.e. doing ikkyo ten thousand times won't allow you to become as good as osensei. He said a lot of osenseis students had no idea what he was talking about a lot of the time and the way osensei tried to teach didnt help. Check out some of his stuff on YouTube.

what is a book that would be helpful to someone beginning to study aikido? by godneedsboozein martialarts

[–]tontomurphy 1 point2 points ago

I know this is not exactly the answer you asked for but you'll garner far more from bringing a notebook to class and jotting down a couple of notes on the techniques you've just done.

Having a think about, playing it through in your mind and writing your thoughts on the movements will solidify your learning immensely, especially if a technique is fresh in your mind. Write the names as well.

To answer what you asked, I recommend "Aikido: Basic and Intermediate Studies" by John Litchen. The photographs and explanations are very good and clear. I found it a lot more helpful than "Aikido and the dynamic sphere".

As entertaining as this is, it shouldn't have gotten physical. Heavy guy didn't seem to really do anything bar shout a bit. At one point he was heading out the door, but the taunting or whatever brought him back in. Assuming the heavy guy was drunk and the thin guy was more in control he should have left fat guy leave.

In saying that, fat guys behaviour was inexcusable. Thin guy was lucky he met with an inexperienced person or he would've gotten the crap hammered out of him.

Aikido - Two Attackers. Discuss. by phaunain martialarts

[–]tontomurphy 0 points1 point ago

It's just a badly labelled connection exercise. Good for aikido students who know the principles involved, bad for people who aren't into aikido. Using the word "attackers" anywhere in this demo, It's no wonder people think Aikido is a load of baloney.
