There needs to be a way to hide posts from subreddits you're subscribed to from your frontpage. Is there something like that already?

Wil Wheaton Reminds Us That Torrents Are Awesome, And Not Just For Pirated Movies by DrJulianBashirin technology

[–]tolley 12 points13 points ago

Torrents are indeed under appreciated. IMO torrents are probably one of the greatest new technologies (well, not new anymore). Before torrents, if there was a file that everybody wanted and tried to download at the same time, it would take hours to get it. Torrents completely destroy that problem. The more people that try to download something at once, the better is it for everybody.

The Avengers: Why Pirates Failed To Prevent A Box Office Record by DrJulianBashirin entertainment

[–]tolley 0 points1 point ago

Cam copies and pirating in general don't hurt box office sales. In addition to seeing a movie, people are also interested in the event and the community it brings. You can't download a night out with your friends all cosplayed up. You can't download the experience of sitting in a theater on opening night, with die hard fans all around you. It's a unique sense of community that you can't get elsewhere.

What is the worst card you have hoarded, believing it to skyrocket in price? by rahrditin magicTCG

This is an old story. Long ago, during Urza's Saga, Wizards printed Tolarian Academy. Shortly after Saga came out, Wizards banned the Academy from Standard and Block constructed (I can't remember if they banned it from extended). A lot of players complained, with good reason. The Academy was useless in limited, and illegal in most constructed formats. If you got one in a pack you basically didn't get a rare. A lot of people complained so Wizards set up an exchange program. If you mailed in an Academy, they'd send you an unopen pack of Saga. It sounded like a good deal, but a lot of work. You had to mail in each Academy and it seemed like a huge waste to mail them one or two at a time. Naturally, we decided to mail them in 36 at a time. We started trading for Academy's at our LGS. I can't remember how many we ended up with. They where so easy to trade for. People where more than willing to trade them off for next to nothing or throw them in on another trade just to sweeten the deal.

Here's where the story gets tragic. We never got around to sending them in. My buddies and I where getting burnt out on magic and we all sorta stopped playing right before the Masques block rotated in to standard (back when Dark Ritual was a standard staple and damage went on the stack, and stacks resolved in batches). I know you're probably thinking "That's good that you didn't send them in, they're worth a decent amount now" and you're right. The tragic part is that we gave them away one day. I think we had 30 of them but since we weren't gonna be playing for much longer none of us wanted to deal with the hassle of mailing them in, so we gave them all to some kid at our LGS. It made his day (we basically gave him 30 packs of Saga) so it wasn't all bad.

This depresses me too, it has for years. Things are changing though.

I used to feel like I was going crazy. Like I was completely out of touch with the rest of society. While I tried to get cars that are good on gas, or tried to find ways to reduce my consumption, I'd watch others buy Hummers/SUVs, take joy rides out to the country, and spend crazy amounts of money they didn't have.

These days, I feel saner than I used to, but I look around me and see insanity everywhere else. Problems that we understand, and have solutions too, but ignore. Idiots and the uneducated choosing to ignore the advise of trained scientists. Its depressing in it's own way but I still manage to keep up hope.

For you see, things are changing. Every time I see an advancement in renewable technologies, I smile. Every time gas goes up a bit more I smile. Every time I overhear people talking about weird weather, or otherwise expressing concern about our changing world, I have hope. Reddit gives me a lot of hope. I get to see all the crap people like the Koch brothers try, but for all the negatives, I see many more positives. People like the climate deniers or the Koch brothers are the minority. We are the majority, and we are slowly getting organized.

Yes, we are late to the party, but better late than never. Keep up hope, but if you have to, act without hope and know that your actions and words inspire hope in others. We are in the middle of societal growing pains. It won't be easy, but we can't fail.

DAE think that shroud should return in place of hexproof by ropaloin magicTCG

[–]tolley -2 points-1 points ago

I like hexproof. Shroud was definitely fun, but it limited you because you couldn't target your own creatures. Imagine if Invisible Stalker had shroud. You'd have a 1/1 unblockable that you couldn't equip, enchant, or otherwise target.

Counting quickly? by Risen_Hayzin baduk

[–]tolley 2 points3 points ago

I practice estimating by logging on to a go server and finding a game that is about half way or really close to being finished. I then take a minute and look around the board and basically try to guess who's ahead, and by how much. I continue to watch the game develop and re-estimate after most moves. I also try to mentally play out sections of the board that aren't settled. Once the game has ended I can see what the final score is and how close my estimate was.

Doing this has really helped me develop a better sense of priority. I've found that a lot of games that I've won, I've won just because I took the initiative and settled certain groups, or taken advantage of weaknesses before my opponent decides to act on them.
