Swansea top Fair Play League Table. Does this mean they get an Europa League spot? by damencein soccer

[–]toasterb 3 points4 points ago

I don't believe so. If I recall correctly, the Europa League spots for fair play go to the leagues with the best overall fair play.

I don't think the EPL was one of those leagues this season.

edit: Confirmed

On this day 14 years ago one of the best games in the history of the old Wembley was played. by Marriott110in soccer

Wow, that game's got it all, great back-and-forth drama, fantastic finishing, and some very well taken penalties at the end.

This was just before I discovered club football right after the 1998 World Cup, and it's interesting to see so many players that I've known from the Premier League playing in the First Division.

What's the most degrading thing you've done for money? by theknightwhosays_neein AskReddit

[–]toasterb 1 point2 points ago

Ugh, of course this is going to be beyond buried, but it's too good not to share, hopefully someone will get a chuckle out of it. It's not something that I did, but something I paid someone to do:

A number of years ago, and a few of us from my office were walking to a restaurant down the street for lunch. My rather outrageous co-worker spotted a pair of skimpy women's underwear draped over the grate of a storm drain. He asked us if we dared him to pick them up. I told him that I'd give him $10 if he did it with his teeth.

I lost $10 that day.

Also, I seriously doubt it's the most degrading thing he's done for money, just the most degrading thing that I've paid someone to do.

Still is the best Premier League goal by White_Soxin soccer

[–]toasterb 1 point2 points ago

yeah, all of the other goals that people have posted are brilliant in their own way, but that one definitely looks like something you wouldn't expect a real person to be able to do. It's just too perfect of a hit from an unnaturally high kick.

I'm glad someone else noticed that.

Are you the target in your gaming group? by bishop1onein boardgames

[–]toasterb 5 points6 points ago

I've definitely ended up in a similar situation to the one that you describe.

My wife and I have a few groups of people that we game with, and lately we've been getting our non-gaming friends into more interesting games (mostly Ticket to Ride, Bohnanza, and Carcassonne). It always seems like they're gunning for me in particular, and I don't know whether this is because I'm the host who explains the games to people or if it's just a continuation of the general light-hearted fuck you attitude that we always have towards each other in competition.

Last round of Bohnanza, people were sure that I was going to win, so they tried not to trade with me. At the end they were resigned to the fact that I'd won, only to discover that I finished 3rd, behind two people that were ragging on me for dominating the game.

Honestly though, my wife is the one they should really be concerned about, she is as ruthless as they come.

Are there any great places to get a bagel in Boston? by pimento37in boston

[–]toasterb 1 point2 points ago

Iggy's bagels are great, as well as just about anything else they make.

You can also find them in most Boston-area Whole Foods, but you have to be careful: the WF brand bagels are in the bins right near the Iggy's ones, and they're not nearly as good. Check the labels, the Iggy's ones will say Iggy's in small type above "Plain Bagel" or "Onion Bagel", but the WF ones will just say "Onion Bagel"

Go to the Whole Foods on River St in Cambridge, get an Iggy's bagel, some cream cheese, and then go to the fish counter for some of their house-smoked salmon. They only have the hot-smoked salmon at River St and the Framingham stores, and it'll change the way you look at smoked salmon forever.

I second this. A few years back, one of my housemates and I ended up around the one in Salem and decided to pop in.

He's from Queens, and was shocked at how good their bagels were. He deemed them the best he'd had in his time in Boston, and then lamented the fact that they were way up in Salem.

Auto Repair in Boston? by NeitherSeenNorHeardin boston

[–]toasterb 1 point2 points ago

I've been going to CLM auto just outside of Inman Square for the last 5 years or so, and they've always been fantastic.

Mario is always up-front with pricing and what needs to be done. The first time I brought my car there he gave me an estimate of $250 for clutch and radiator repairs, and even though he said it took more labor than expected, they stuck to their estimate and didn't charge me any more.

Every time I've gone to them, I've left with my car running great, and a whole lot more money in my pocket than I expected.

They also have a service contract with Zip Car, and I don't think they'd be doing business with CLM if they weren't good.

Anybody on here excited for "The Super Bowl of Soccer" according to Fox? by gayunicornrainbowsin sports

That's usually how it works, but sometimes you need a 3rd jersey for when you play at team who have a jersey that's red and white striped.

I know this is an issue that we Americans always raise with soccer, but prior to the jersey sponsorship, the team crests were just as tiny. 1970s Manchester United

People get to recognize teams more by the consistency of their colors/styling, rather than the text.

Definitely excited because it's the CL final and I've got the afternoon free to relax and watch the game

But as a Manchester United fan it's a little like an getting ready to watch a Giants vs. Steelers Super Bowl as an Eagles fan. I don't really want either team to win, but I'm hoping for a good game.

Seems fine now. Saw people getting off trains as I walked by. There was a CPD bomb squad truck, but the station was open

It sounded like something was happening above ground that caused the station to be closed. I'm walking from Kendall now.
