Was reading my kids a bed time story last night when I came across this page in a Thomas the Tank Engine book...what exactly is "special coal"? by JackSmackusin funny

26 here. Still got all my nice die-cast miniatures in a box at the parents' place somewhere.

My Xperia X10 has serious amnesia and constantly forgets what I was browsing the moment I switch to another app. Does this look right to you? by timixin gadgets

During the 2.3 upgrade I read about people putting different regions' ROMs on their X10s to get it earlier. This sounds like it's worth a shot as it's still going to be running a ROM designed for the phone by the people who made it. Is it easy to do?

I really want to ditch this thing for a Droid 4 when they come out, but I'm a bit poor at the moment and want the X10 to last as long as it can.

I've been avoiding custom ROMs - I really don't want to have to install someone else's software just to make my utterly standard phone usable. I'd consider claiming warranty, but it's clearly a software issue, not hardware, so they'd just test it and send it back.

Broken midshaft. Let that sink in.

If your feet are up on the dash and you have a bad enough car accident that the airbags deploy, you're probably going to get injured pretty badly. Just sayin'.

Edit: found this - guy has legs up on the dash, airbag goes off. "Both femurs were broken midshaft. He resembled a christmas turkey."

What songs have you heard played in situations which--if you actually listen closely--they're totally inappropriate for? by TexasDexin AskReddit

They played The Whitlams' Love This City throughout the 2000 Sydney olympics. The song's about a guy who killed himself because of the olympics. Sydney still either doesn't get it or doesn't care...

Heh. Peterbilt University looks like an elaborate ad for their current lineup of products, but is interesting nonetheless. Checking out the manuals online for the trucks I'm working with is a clever idea - I'll definitely do that, thanks!

Yeah, the fleet I'm working with is kept fairly new - I don't think there's anything much older than about 8 years. There's a handful of these around, for example: http://www.iveco.com.au/acco.htm

PTO adjusted through cruise control - that sounds devilishly clever to me. That's the sort of thing that gets me interested!

I'd love to sit one of the guys down in a truck for a few hours and just go over everything, but they're all pretty busy... and so am I if it comes to that. I'd have to settle for one of the drivers when I go out on runs with them and try not to distract them too much from the real work.

A pull lever? The trucks I've been in have a simple on/off pushbutton for PTO. There's so many different ways the same control can be built in, it's confusing.

See, that's the thing... I'm not even sure what I should ask. I want to know what everything does :) and bugging you bit by bit with photos or descriptions of random buttons would get tiresome for everyone pretty quickly I'd imagine.

I've actually found a few videos on Youtube of people showing off and giving tours of their cabs - videos like this. The button I thought might be PTO could actually be a diff lock... all this stuff would probably be automatic in a car, if a car even had it. Differential control, engine braking, the millions of light switches - this is what I want to know about.

Thanks for the offer - I might message you if I get stuck on something or other? Otherwise I should be able to figure things out from Youtube/Googling particular things.

The C sets are nice enough but they don't run on my line. I've seen some pretty shoddy Ks though.

I live and work on the Northern line, and it's a complete crapshoot as to what shows up to take you home. Some days you'll get a nice comfy Oscar, some days you'll get an airless box that smells like a bum's peed in it. I occasionally sit back down and wait for the next train instead of going home smelling like an S set.

You've got it good in Perth.

NSW's the only state in Australia with doubledecker trains. The one in that photo is an S-set - that's some of our oldest rolling stock. They are from 1972 and do not have air conditioning. Picture what a car from the early 1970s looks like, and that's what we're catching to work in Sydney.

They've purposefully picked one of the oldest trains we're still running for this image, but the truth of the matter is those things still run on almost every line, including the International and Domestic airport runs - I'm embarassed thinking about what tourists must think when they step off a 747 onto one of those hot, stinky, noisy rattlers.

To be fair, these are our newest suburban trains, and are pretty much top notch in terms of comfort. We do have the XPT and Xplorer for long-distance hauls, which are much closer to the monsters in the original pic.

Hi /r/webdev, I run Tim's Laptop Service Manuals and I could do with some advice on building version 2. by timixin webdev

From the point of view of just getting the files up on the net, that would work. That's pretty much what I'm doing now, except I have to manage the links myself.

One single manual might cover 10 or 12 different laptop models, and there's a few models up there right now that have multiple manuals catering for them (new manual revisions incorporating more models etc). Managing those relationships in a wall-o'-links becomes more difficult the more there are, and the harder it is to maintain the less likely I am to keep doing it - which harms the project.

The interface that you see there as someone downloading a manual is more or less fine, and anything new that gets built will act pretty similar - but I want to migrate it all to something database-driven so that adding and updating content isn't such a pain in the butt.

The design as-is is alright - the problem is the back-end process of managing the files and linking them to the various model numbers.

I'm hoping there's an existing PHP app out there that can be shoehorned into doing what I want, otherwise I'll have to find someone willing to do the dirty work or roll up my sleeves and dig into it myself.
