Having been a .Net web developer for almost five years now, I can't help but get the feeling that .Net simply isn't conducive to a truly extensible CMS. I recently deployed a major Microsoft website based on the Orchard CMS, which is phenomenally dynamic, but it does nothing to manage it. Also, it's stupidly slow. I see no reason why a site as content-simple as Orchard's own site should take several seconds of server processing to load. I mean, having been in the nitty-gritty of it, I "get" it, but that's still no excuse. It can be expanded very easily, but to what end? Every additional layer makes managing the content one layer harder, and Orchard does very little to make the content management easy.

Also, in my old-school eyes, the whole concept of MVC is just broken. Give me five levels of control over things I never had any interest in controlling? Force specific URL structures that aren't necessarily conducive to a clean user experience? It seems like every major .Net utility is geared at an audience it doesn't understand, and thus far, YetAnotherForum.Net is the only one I've used that sets out to accomplish a task, and accomplishes it well. Everything else has been bloated, inefficient, and/or just a pain in the ass to deal with.

I swear, in the time I spent wrangling Orchard into serving all of our needs clumsily, I could have written a custom tool to provide exactly what we needed in half the time, and the page load times would be in the half-second range, not five seconds. The more time goes on and the more experience I get, the less I can support any CMS from a developer's perspective. I mean, I "get" it, I just don't see the point. In the time spent customizing, training, and supporting a client website built on a mainstream CMS, I could build and deploy a custom tool that makes every task painfully simple, and has no features that aren't necessary. Streamlined tools are more conducive to getting shit done, and CMS's are not streamlined.

Sorry, I guess I just needed to rant... I've been specializing in User Experience development lately.. my current job title is Interactive Developer... my living is made by creating tools to help people get shit done faster. Thus far in my experience, no mainstream CMS has ever come close to the efficiency provided by a tool built for the job, even if that job is content management.

Google wants to make sci-fi a reality with “Solve for X,” a conference for radical tech ideas by louiebaurin geek

Google wants to jump on the next big thing first to make another boatload of cash with "Solve for x"

Yes you did. You very clearly said it was. And nothing Google does is done out of "pure altruism". Google makes money from their advertisements, yet the express goal of their search engine is to get you off of google.com as fast as possible. Why? Because the sooner you leave, the sooner you found what you were looking for, and the more likely you are to come back. Has that stopped anybody from using Google? Nope. It's ensured that people continue using it. They help themselves by helping the users. What better way to make even more of a positive image of themselves than to say "Let's help all of humanity"? We need that. Nobody else is doing it, and there's no incentive from world governments to do so, when that's what humanity needs most.

[–]timeshifter_ -1 points0 points ago

And you're going to find a problem with Google saying "Hey smart people, let's progress humanity!" just because it's a good business incentive for them? Christ you're an idiot. The entire government is saying "Hey dumb people, let's prevent humanity's progress so the already-rich of us can get even richer!" Words cannot express how thrilled I would be to see Google start actively pushing for the betterment of humanity. If it profits them as well, why should we care? They deserve to make a profit from trying to do what the US government absolutely refuses to do: improve the world for the sake of humanity. We aren't a per-nation race. We're a global species. Anything that pushes forward that notion needs our support. Period.

I've left that as a righty. Only once, though. Prior to last week at league, I didn't even know a 6-pin split was possible, lol.

My problem with the way Newt proposed it was the whole "51st state" thing. I live in the USA, and fuck that. We're a global species; we need to start acting like it. If we colonize the moon, it will be humanity's first extra-terrestrial colony, not the USA's.

Your spare game is important by Kennertronin Bowling

[–]timeshifter_ 3 points4 points ago

Your spare game is your game. You don't need a huge list of anecdotal stats to prove it. Take an otherwise perfect game, and throw one 9- in the fifth. By missing one pin, you just lost 33 points on the game. Pick the spare up, and you gain 12 back, for the 279.

As everyone I know who bowls regularly likes to say: strikes are nice, but spares make the game.

Running a single .aspx page in a subfolder of Orchard... can it be done? by timeshifter_in orchardcms

[–]timeshifter_[S] 0 points1 point ago

I realized after posting this that my problem is much more easily solved with a flat HTML file and a few lines of JS. I will say that following similar instructions, I was absolutely unable to make any separate site in a subfolder function. I suppose we just have unusual needs, and I doubt there's a CMS out there that would completely suit our needs. Way too late to write something custom, though :(

Running a single .aspx page in a subfolder of Orchard... can it be done? by timeshifter_in orchardcms

[–]timeshifter_[S] 0 points1 point ago

I don't want any of that. Orchard's caused a world of problems as it is, and the purpose of this is simply click-tracking from emails that can't be sent out via CampaignMonitor. Orchard would do nothing except incur an additional 5 seconds of load time, just to track a click, and that's unacceptable.

Chrome passed Firefox globally the second week of January 2012? by Kriemin web_design

I installed the 9.1 release and it had no compatibility issues whatsoever. I'm just fine with being a couple months behind the update cycle if it means my browser is actually stable.

Pin placement by gallantgriftin Bowling

[–]timeshifter_ 0 points1 point ago

My thoughts may also be biased, as I've grown accustomed to the C-System 4.5 and Ulti-max... both are phenomenally versatile balls compared to my Alpha-max, and the Alpha is the only ball I have that's pin-down, not pin-up. It just naturally wants to break way too early for the speed that I throw, but that could partially be the surface, too. The Ulti-max carries so far through oil it's almost ridiculous, but when it breaks, holy shit can it break.

For Firefox users on Windows, I very strongly suggest getting Pale Moon instead. It's Firefox, just optimized for Windows. I haven't had a single Flash stutter or other typical Firefox lag since I switched.

Pin placement by gallantgriftin Bowling

[–]timeshifter_ 0 points1 point ago

Pin placement will be more important regarding coverstock and your throw style, I think. Any ball can work on any oil if you throw it right. The way I throw right now, pin-down balls don't work too well, because I'm fairly low speed and high rev, so the longer the ball will travel, the better. Both of my current strike balls are pin-up.

For different oil patterns, you'll want change your throw, not so much your equipment.

Or maybe the other player just improved? Halfway through this season, my written average is 164. I just switched up shoes and styles, and am throwing much more solidly now. Hopefully, I'll be throwing regular 190+ from here on out. Does the fact that I got better make me a sandbagger? I say you open your mind a little bit. People can improve, you know.

Also, with my 164 average, I have thrown 700 series'. Sometimes you're just in the zone.
