TROPHY CASE

Scientists have created artificial genetic material, XNA, that can store information and evolve over generations in a similar way to DNA – a feat expected to drive research in medicine and biotechnology, and shed light on how molecules first replicated and assembled into life billions of years ago. by marcussantiagoin science

[–]thyris 0 points1 point ago

It was found the XNAs could form a double helix with DNA and were more stable than natural genetic material.

Wouldn't that imply that evolution would be slower with XNA? In a world of rapidly evolving DNA, would a XNA lifeform really even have a chance...

Raise the Minimum Wage: The current minimum wage is actually lower than what a minimum-wage worker earned in 1968 and is too meager to offer anyone the chance to climb out of poverty, let alone afford basic goods and services. by Dizzy_Slipin politics

The past recession was brutal on jobs, household wealth and economic growth.

I'm sorry, it's in the past already? I figured it was still alive and kicking.

[PF] As a DM how do you deal with random actions by PCs by thyrisin rpg

[–]thyris[S] 0 points1 point ago

Makes sense, a delay penalty (although you wouldn't say that to the PC) for off-track/unrelated-to-story actions - I like this strategy if someone's just being disruptive.

lol very nice. I'll have to try that.

More-so about pay than about location - you generally get what you pay for - When you pay low, you'll have to deal with random delays, half-understood requirements, and partially completed features, and flakes who bail on you mid-project.

Worst case they leave you hanging w/ a poorly made, un-maintainable piece of garbage. Best case (if you have a simple, small project) you will get a your product that probably will at least "work".

Speaking from experience. Think of it like a lawyer, you want a great lawyer that will get the job done right - you have to pay the big bucks generally. If you want a lawyer that's cheap, he's gunna have 250 other clients and isn't going to assign an equitable portion of effort to you other than maybe meeting you on the day-of in the courtroom to ask you what your case is about.

How powerful/fast of a CPU could we produce if it were the size of a typical video card? The size of an entire motherboard? by ScienceBallsin askscience

[–]thyris 2 points3 points ago

The thing is, CPUs really don't do very much. They do have lots of tiny electronics on them, but they perform essentially just the basic math calculations for the machine to run off of.

More than likely, if such a 'large' CPU was created it would have additional cores similar to the multi-core CPUs you see being released by Intel and AMD over the past 7 years or so. It would not necessarily gain any new capability, but certainly gaining concurrent computation capability.

Would this hold true still, even for bigger circuits/connections?

Yes and no. It depends on the frequency of the chip. The old CPUs had much larger circuits, but you couldn't get very high frequencies through them without a large amount of power (which would generate ungodly heat).

Why do certain things that shock/scare us give us the jitters/shock which basically makes us useless and other things give us super strength(hysterical strength)? by qwertisdirtyin askscience

[–]thyris 1 point2 points ago

This happened to me on my motorcycle during an near miss crash with another vehicle. I had the jitters and couldn't immediately lift my bike, it's like my mind was so all over the place I couldn't focus my mind enough to continuously drive my muscles to lift my bike. Strange feeling, the best comparison I can make is it's like trying to lift something heavy while laughing hysterically.

I used to do freelance programming professionally. I found much of my contracts by finding small businesses here and there that needed some small projects tackled. SMBs just don't pay much or too often, so I found it a constant struggle. A larger more reliable source is development studios, they often need consultants for gigs that pop up with their clients.

Also... contracts... are... key... In the business world its very easy to get screwed over. I had a great client suddenly turn at the end of a project a withhold payment screwing me royally for several weeks untill I essentially forced them to pay.

It is tough, rough, especially by yourself, and you may find that you never really escaped what y9u were trying to leave behind. Sorry to ramble. hope that helps though.

I'm 27 now, and wish I had really actually focused on these three things:

  1. Reaching out for the sale, asking the customer to buy.

  2. Cash-flow.

  3. The right team means the right people.

I knew those things were important, but I always just assumed they would fall into place as I got going... they don't. You have to be aggressive and really focus on them. For example, cash-flow is the absolute foundation, strive (and plan how) to get it, and build on it. Also, don't partner anyone early on unless they have the same entrepreneurial attitude, (trust me) it just doesn't work and you'll end up wasting money and time.

Good find. Sadly these events do not seem like common knowledge, this is the first I've even heard of them. I've even discussed this with friends and we all b*tched about why the us hasn't adopted them, when really it's already been done. Time to make the switch, and encourage everyone else to do so. It just needs to happen.

Agree. flash based video is pretty net standard, or html5, or at the very least downloadable avi or something that doesn't require bloatware be installed.

I decided several years ago to just start counting down from 1000 rather than counting up. Seems to work better that way.

Or you can vote libertarian. The only reason it's a two party system is because we let it be.
