What are your favorite go-to meals? by qwortecin Fitness

[–]thenewguyonreddit 33 points34 points ago

Fruit is good for keeping your sanity and sticking to a healthy diet.

Most folks will eventually get a craving for something sweet, and most people don't have the iron willpower to suppress that craving indefinitely.

For those people, they're a lot better off eating a bowl of strawberries, then they are a bowl of ice cream.

Also, if you do any bouts of extended cardio that last longer then an hour, eventually you'll need to replenish your carb/glycogen and electrolyte stores, and fruit is pretty much perfect for this. It's watery, juicy, easy on the stomach, and gives you fast energy.

If you only had enough money to buy one good suit, what color would you choose? by thenewguyonredditin malefashionadvice

[–]thenewguyonreddit[S] 0 points1 point ago

The thing with darker suits is that it's usually considered more conservative and professional.

This quote summed up what I think I felt all along but didn't know how to articulate.

The industry I work in is very laid back so don't feel like I need to portray a very conservative image.

I think you made me realize that lightness/darkness is more important then actual color itself.

Can you wear both brown and black shoes with a navy suit? Or is black out of the question?

Honestly, how many people here smoke cigarettes on a somewhat regular basis? by Duncein running

[–]thenewguyonreddit 4 points5 points ago

I smoke maybe 4-5 cigarettes a month (along with a few bowls as well).

I can run a 10k without stopping. (Not necessarily very fast, but the endurance is there)

If you're young and don't have too many "pack-years" under your belt, it's not THAT bad on your cardiovascular endurance, although it's definitely not helping either.

I have come to terms with the fact that I do things that are unhealthy and risky (smoking, drinking, etc), but I also do things that are healthy (run, lift weights, eat plenty of fish and veggies).

For me, I find that in order to have a good, well-rounded life, it is worth smoking a few cigarette in your time (although it is smart to keep your total lifetime consumption as low as possible).

I feel the same way about most things that are bad for you. Of course it's not a good idea to eat deep fried foods every day or do ecstasy every weekend. But the experience is valuable enough that I'm ok with taking a small loss in HP, in order to fill out my stats.

Not saying smoking a cigarette is anything super profound, just that it adds another experience to your life that non-smokers will never experience. And many of are sensation-seekers.

Maybe I'll pay a price when I'm older but I think I'm doing a decent job of exercising moderation, being able to do some bad stuff without getting too out of line, and having a lot of fun along the way.

Rain gear by emjim123in running

[–]thenewguyonreddit 20 points21 points ago

I do a few things different in the rain.

  • Baseball hat so it doesn't spray directly in my face.

  • No electronics

  • Vaseline on the nips and then bandaids over the nips to protectt against bloody nipples.

  • If I anticipate my socks getting wet I might vaseline some key foot areas such as the Achilles tendon, big padded area below the big toe, or the outside of the pinkie toe.

  • Underarmor or some other compression shirt (if it's going to get wet, a constant press against the body feels A LOT better then continuous slapping against the body and peeling off for the entire race). Normally I don't like compression shirts but they are WORTH IT in the rain!

How do you get an accurate calorie count on your runs? Do GPS running apps for mobile phones do a good job? by VaccusMonasticain running

I use WolframAlpha.

It allows you to enter in distance, pace, bodyweight, and a few other factors.

Running from couch to 22km tomorrow ... Any advice? by Wolfiepooin running

[–]thenewguyonreddit 4 points5 points ago

Just FYI: Performing an extensive run without any prior training (especially on concrete) is exactly how people develop illiotibial band syndrome or "runner's knee".

It's painful and hard to cure.

This is probably not what you wanted to here but it's the truth.

I wouldn't if I were you.

What do you carry in your camelbak? by mastigiain running

I'm always wanted to try fruit juice diluted half way down with a dash of salt.

I imagine you could run until your knees went out drinking that stuff.

Surprising to hear that. I've had it and found it boring. The batter was crispy but lacked a flavorful spicyness I've come to expect.

I'll take Cackalack's Hot Chicken Shack.

We need some more information:

  • What is your distance per week?
  • How many days in a row do you run before taking a rest day?
  • How much do you weigh?
  • How long have you been running?

If you had a 350$ budget for a years supply of supplements, what would you get, and where? by Soccer_fanaticin Fitness

[–]thenewguyonreddit 1 point2 points ago

I'd spend $100 on a used freezer from Craigslist, then spend $250 on all different kinds of meat from Costco.

Steaks, salmon, chicken breast, tilapia, porkchops, scallops, ribs, etc

Freeze it all up into individual ziploc bags, then just take a bag out the day before I go to bed so it will be thawed out by tomorrow.

No need to buy all those ridiculous chemical compounds.

What is the one thing that will haunt you for the rest of your life? by blackpapermaxin AskReddit

[–]thenewguyonreddit 0 points1 point ago

When I was 17 I introduced a friend of mine to methamphetamine.

We were both good kids from good families. I got sucked into it for about 6 months but was able to get out. I'm now 24. I now have a good job, beautiful girlfriend, and a good life overall.

My friend never exited that lifestyle. He's be doing it on and off for pretty much the last 6 or 7 years. Last I heard he's homeless and living on the street in Utah.

He probably never would have tried that garbage if it wasn't for me.

After more then a year of sitting on the fence, I've finally committed. by thenewguyonredditin running

Note: For Friday where it says '30 minute cross' this refers to cardio training that does not work the legs very hard (i.e. swimming, cycling, rowing).

Hal says: "Cross-training days should be considered easy days that allow you to recover from the running you do the rest of the week.".

So for me, I'll be doing swimming. I'm just going to replace minutes for laps. So where it says '30 minutes cross', I'll be swimming 30 laps in a pool. Then increasing that as I progress through the program.
