The US Senate Is Set To Consider An Amendment That Would Make All Health Plans Subject To The Religious Whims Of Employers. Take Action: Tell Your Senators to Oppose the Blunt Amendment! by theamericanhumanistin atheism

Actually, under the new health care law employers are required to provide certain health services to their employees, or pay into a national fund which in turn provides health coverage.

You have to consider that employers who are also not religious could abuse this rule to cut costs by using a religious excuse. Either way, religious belief should not impact an employee's ability to receive vital health benefits.

If you want to help Jessica please contribute to the Scholarship for Jessica Ahlquist Fund.

The fund will be managed by The Humanist Foundation, which is the endowment fund of the American Humanist Association. With all of the stress and abuse Jessica is facing now, we believe that she should have the opportunity to go to college without worrying about things like tuition and books.

The fundraiser ends on February 29th, so please contribute before then if you can do so.

You're right! There are some good humanistic musicians (Bad Religion, Holly Near, XTC, etc) but few identify as humanists specifically. Check out up and coming Australian artist Shelly Segal: http://m.youtube.com/index?desktop_uri=%2F&gl=US#/watch?v=z-h_jNiSczw

Yes, if the faithful among you need that faith to prevent you from lying, stealing, and killing, please just keep believing.

Different years we've done different campaigns, but the first one "Don't believe in a god? Just be good for goodness's sake!" featured just a black Santa. Point taken though!

I know humanists that have reconciled their thinking under a pantheistic and deist outlook--I see no contradiction there. But it wouldn't be possible to be a humanist who believed in an interventionalist god. Then divine revelation and ancient texts will get in the way of scientific decision making. And instead of knowing that analysis and action are the best tools for getting things done prayer to a nonexistent god will slow progress.

I find that the intellectual arguments against free will are very convincing. But often folks who contemplate the absence of free will incorrectly assume a world without personal responsibility. Focus groups on the question discover that we'll make better choices if we live like there is free will vs we live like there isn't. It's a little difficult to put succinctly, but we wouldn't want to live in a world where everyone felt powerless to influence there own lives--even if they really are.

These improve the lives of ourselves and others, even if they do challenge your sensibilities.

Most humanists I know just keep on using the expressions you mention. "Oh Darwin!" or "Go to New Jersey!" or "May a combination of your biology and environment lead to undesirable results!" are just not as satisfying.
