TROPHY CASE

In a non-linear (no leveling) MMORPG, how does one prevent players from hitting end game content right away? by erbush1988in truegaming

[–]the8thbit 1 point2 points ago

  • Allow the players to own land, and use land ownership (or membership to a group that owns land) to flag content as accessible/inaccessible to a given player.

  • Require some sort of "player approval" mechanism from players who already have access to content in order to gain access.

  • Distribute content in an absolutely random and/or arbitrary manner. (E.g., LSD: Dream Simulator the MMO)

  • Analyse the actions of the player to select for a specific set of content suited to the inferred personality/psychology of the player.

Ender chests - constant storage across different chests! by Enfortein Minecraft

[–]the8thbit 0 points1 point ago

If it were associated with each player, you could just use the same data structure that handles inventory, and create two instead of one for each player, the second only available through the enderchest. If it is associated with the world instead, you would probably have to create a new data structure.

Here's where I must have taken the wrong fork in your logic. How is it any different from any other voluntary trade? You give me X I give you Y. You give me a loaf of bread I give you two cabbages. You unclog my toilet I give you a goat. You press this red button for 8 hours I give you $80.

The thing is, none of these are examples of capitalism. Not without context, at the very least.

Why do you presuppose the need for a state to inject itself into what should be just one more trade between two parties?

I don't, I presuppose the need for a state to inject itself into capitalist interactions. This is separate from free trade, which is mutually exclusive with capitalism.

For example, without a state, as an owner of a rented property, how do I force my renter to pay rent? As a renter, why wouldn't I simply start using the property, and never pay rent as it is not in my interests to do so?

Immediate access to a portable and easily usable medium of exchange that represents the value of the labor they expended and that does not require any prior investment in infrastructure and materials the assumption of risk and delay of months or even years before turning a profit nor do they have to deal with the ongoing responsibility of maintaining the venture it once their shift or contract it over.

But a capitalist interaction, in most cases, is not an exchange of the value of labor, there exists risk for all actors in the exchange (for example, the worker may lose his job, or the capitalist may dictate a change in pay or other management that the worker has no say in) and no risk in the strict sense exists once ROI is 0 or greater. Further, there are more effective ways to exchange commodities for labor value, such as through a free market, where labor value and reimbursement are equal for all self-interested intelligent actors.

According to my calculations the release of the three Diablo games form a polynomial function, and I can conclude that Diablo 4 is due to release fall 2030 by OlleOliverin gaming

Yes, but the original phrasing is strange, as it implies that there wouldn't be any problem with the graph if a reason was given for this shitty scale, regardless of how shitty that is. (E.g., "that is the default scale." or something like that)

No, I assumed the above post was attempting to say that it was annoyingly arbitrary, not annoying and arbitrary.

Why hasn't Communism ever suceeded? by Liberal_Jewin DebateaCommunist

[–]the8thbit 0 points1 point ago

I hope you realise that communism itself never really existed.

This is false. Communist societies, from Spain, to the Ukraine, to the Iroquois, to many small communes, to most of our preagrarian existence have been abundant. In fact, if one includes non-industrial examples, one could argue that communism has been historically more prevalent than any other economic/political mode of organization.

[–]the8thbit 0 points1 point ago

Perhaps, however, the exclusive cooperative management of the means of production eliminates private ownership of said means of production, which I feel is most pertinent, especially when making a comparison to a mode of economic organization which rests upon pretext of private ownership of the means of production: ["anarcho"]capitalism. With what information we have, the closest existing philosophy is mutualism, and as we don't have information regarding other types of properties, I don't think it is particularly prudent to assume support for non-mutual banking, private land ownership, or private commodity ownership. Further, even if the OP does not subscribe to, say, mutual banking, she may still fall under the umbrella of a mutualist school, such as agorism, albeit, not mutualism in the classical sense.

In other words, 'mutualist' is much more accurate than 'somewhere between anarcho-syndicalist and "anarcho"-capitalist'.

The OP mentioned no desired to do away with private property

Except, of course, for cooperative management of the means of production.

I find that the idea that I may, and will very likely, live for an indeterminate amount of time has actually motivated me. Rather than doing a lot of shit that ultimately doesn't matter, I'm slightly decreasing my chance of death and increasing my overall life satisfaction.

TIL President Reagan once wrote a letter to a boy who was requesting federal funds to clean his room. by yodaman293in todayilearned

[–]the8thbit 0 points1 point ago

Even as recently as the 1990s the Democrats believed in shrinking government and regulation in favor of the private sector.

The democrats are neither progressive nor left wing.

The timing of Reagan's presidency was different, some countries went so far in to excessive government intervention that the opposite direction appeared to be more favourable to everybody in the west at the time.

Unless you lived in South America, I suppose.

There's also an entire philosophical can of worms one opens if one is to claim that there is a significant distinction between private and traditional government organizations where both maintain hierarchical authority structures.

Reagan wasn't a bad guy

The Reagan administration is wholly or partially responsible for widespread human rights violations as per funding of the south American contras, tripling of the national deficit, a 3.3 point increase in unemployment in the first three years of his presidency, a failed attempt to privatize our entire social security system followed by a massive tax payer bailout of the same social security system, the continued apartheid in South Africa, the creation of the Taliban, and a 73% increase in national wealth inequality.

Reagan may have sent letters to children, but his administration is also responsible for the oppression and death of many people.

Nor would it make sense to do so, as before Anonymous, 'anonymous' was not a specific group, and thus, was not designated with a capital letter.

The meaning of "Anonymous" with a capital 'A' has changed considerably in the last 7 odd years.

Why are humans so bad at childbirth? by ProbablyOnTheToiletin askscience

[–]the8thbit 29 points30 points ago

The question becomes, are this and the many scientific parallels in Genesis a coincidence, a case of loose interpretation, or a sign of early attempts to reconcile observable phenomena with reason, aka science.

It is an interesting anthropological query, however, I feel the need to point out that science and reason are not synonymous. Science is the philosophy of observation. Rationalism does not require observation. In other words, a rational argument could be observationally unsound. Science, as a process, is a type of reason, and it is very good at allowing us to understand the natural world, however, it is not relevant to more abstract concepts, such as those found in pure mathematics.

[–]the8thbit 14 points15 points ago

All medical conditions are natural processes, most exist without any direct human intervention.

ADVENT (or Adventure) is the first text adventure ever, Zork followed a bit after. I strongly prefer Zork, it has a more memorable environment, better puzzles, is longer, and tells you where things are using cardinal directions which reduces a lot of frustration associated with ADVENT.

Fun fact: If you've every played the Atari game by the same name, it's supposed to be a realtime, graphical, action representation of the text adventure.
