Is there an equation for finding out all the possible combinations of something? by IceOnFire97in math

[–]thant 0 points1 point ago

Incidentally, Richard Feynman talks about how he used this and other tricks to reduce the number of combinations he had to try to pick locks in Los Alamos. See "Surely You're Joking Mr. Feynman" for the details (and other amazing stories).

Is it possible to tell if a string of letters and number is completely random? Or encodes information? by YouMadin math

[–]thant 0 points1 point ago

Assume for simplicity that each letter in the n-letter string is i.i.d. i.e, that you see the letter A w.p p_A, B w.p p_B, ..., Z w.p p_Z, and sum of p_A to p_Z is equal to 1. Then as n grows large, you expect to see n*p_A occurences of A, etc. if it is truly random. Essentially you are checking to see if the sequence is one of a "typical set", which is defined as all sequences whose empirical entropy is within epsilon wiggle room of the true entropy. So in this case you could declare with high probability that the string of letters is random if its entropy is close to the entropy of the true distribution. You can extend this to non-i.i.d. sources.

Generalization of F(A ⊕ B) = F(A) + F(B) - F(A ⊗ B)? by sciolizerin math

This follows directly from the probability version, since entropy is defined by the probabilities.

[Image Processing - "Senior" Level] Uniform Quantizer - Have the solution, have no idea how to get to it. by PenguinMonsterin HomeworkHelp

[–]thant 0 points1 point ago

It looks like you have five choices of levels, -2 to +2, and you need to threshold the samples in your sequence to one of the five levels. Clearly, you should just round to the nearest value, and truncateto +/- 2 if necessary.

e.g. .25 is closest to 0 out of the five values, so quantize it to 0

Is there some other part to it?

Everton at forefront of performance analytics in Premier League by charzanin soccer

[–]thant 4 points5 points ago

I'm glad to see football embrace data analysis. Although the individual statistics may not be well-understood as far as predicting performance - is number of passes a good metric for predicting a player's success? - it is certainly a step in the right direction.

For example, the breakdown of Fellaini's statistics that someone posted a couple weeks back shows that he is statistically comparable to some of the more popular guys.

Israeli soccer has reached a new low, and the league may be disbanded by EliteKillin soccer

[–]thant 2 points3 points ago

I haven't been to a game in Israel in nearly 15 years, but I still love to support the country's football and hope for international success (e.g. Benayoun). Seeing this just saddens me deeply and it's an embarrassment to the country and tarnishes their international football reputation.

He is replacing the term 1/csc(x) with sin(x). so 1/(csc(x))2 = (1/csc(x))2 = (sin(x))2

I disagree. It's sampled in the fourth dimension (time axis), just as it was sampled in the other three dimensions. However, the first three (spatial) dimensions were projected onto two dimensions.

Just as we call digital music a one-dimensional discrete time-domain signal, we can say this image has a one-dimensional discrete time component.

AT&T increases unlimited data throttling threshold - SlashGear by touryin iphone

[–]thant 0 points1 point ago

The difference is that you can still use unlimited data at no extra cost, but they make no guarantee about the data rates. With the tiered plan, you would get charged extra for going over. As a customer with the unlimited plan, I agree it's a bullshit loophole.
