TROPHY CASE

When I was younger I was being prepped for surgery when the nurses informed me they had to shave my pubes. It was the first time that area was ever shaved and it was by a group of 4 nurses. What strange hospital experiences have you encountered? Potentially [NSFW] by Windowarriorin AskReddit

12-yearold very white me had my appendix out here. After surgery, the only available "bed" was the delivery bed. Quite likely I was allowed to use it only because I was the only white patient in the hospital. The staff was in and out all night getting instruments to use on the woman who was giving birth next door in the labor room.

I hope you can hang on to your goodwill toward the younger generation. It may be that you're the one of your generation that they end up trusting.

If I were you I would be careful whenever there is any conversation about going out -- if asked what you think about an expensive place, reply "boy, that sounds great, I'd never feel I could afford it myself; if you were to treat us, we'd be very grateful" -- not "sounds great!"

Thank you. Well put.

This one genuinely is charming.

A couple of years ago I was dating this lady. Her ex's fiance invited everyone over for thanksgiving dinner. So it was the fiance, the ex, my GF, me, everyone's kids and probably some I've forgotten. The lady cooked a feast for the whole group. Classy lady.

There was a SFW version but I can't recall it.

I could never keep latitude and longitude straight until Jimmy Buffet sang "Changes in latitudes, changes in attitudes". Go south and everyone mellows out.

I live where I can tell which direction is West by just looking around and seeing where the Rocky Mountains are. I mean they're these huge mountains, right there. But I still get East and West mixed up. Sigh . . .

How do people learn to eat? Is it instinctual to stick random items in an orifice in your body, activate certain muscles to grind said random items, and then activate peristalsis in order to swallow? by warp_lordin AskReddit

[–]tgeliot 1 point2 points ago

Given that it's basically the same mechanism that everything from humans down to earthworms use, I'd say yes, it's instinctual.

Humans are different in that they'll stick things in their mouths just to explore them, which is why it's so important to keep dangerous little items away from babies.

Out of curiosity, which schools were these? Everyone has their own view of what is a "high level" school.

I've never actually been part of the university admission process, but I hear over and over that they look for students who take challenging classes, not those who get high GPAs on easy classes. At some schools, they have "weighted" GPAs, where, for example, an A in an AP class will pull the weighted GPA up more than an A in a non-AP class.

I'd say look into hybrid programs that combine, say, engineering and medicine, or engineering and biology. There's sure to be huge growth in such areas, with lots of cool work to be done.

Nope. Some in the US would say "senior", but many would say "grade 12".

Maybe this is a generational thing. I was in 12th grade back in 1974.

[–]tgeliot 1 point2 points ago

Story time:

My then-wife came from a German family, so we had a bit of German culture sprinkled in our lives. She had a very devout Christian friend who was getting married. My wife was very artistic and creative, and so hand-wove some beautiful table linens as a wedding present. When presented with the gift, the friend, knowing my wife had made them, didn't just say "thank you", she said "Oh bless you".

Our three-year-old looked up and replied "We say gesundheit."

What negative things will happen when your state/country legalizes gay marriage? by gayhusbandin AskReddit

[–]tgeliot 0 points1 point ago

As a whole-hearted supporter of gay marriage, I offer you only my understanding of the opposition.

Their position is that gay marriage is different from what God or nature intended (for reproduction, raising a family, etc.) and therefore sends a signal that moving away from these traditional roles is OK -- which would result in a lessening of respect for these roles, and then maybe a slippery slope into other, genuinely harmful models.
