Should I look for a summer job here in Davis or back home? by brtdud7in UCDavis

[–]tdk1007 4 points5 points ago

Depends on where you are from.

You should seriously consider an internship, it will give you more perspective on your field of study and build up connections for future jobs. Unpaid internships are total bullshit and should be illegal, but it's still better than having nothing to do, and more rewarding than making coffee at starbucks.

Question: Does anybody else know about the "workplace/area/studio" in Davis? by DavidIsPostingin UCDavis

I think you might be referring to this place next to De Veres.

I've been itching to get/build an RC plane. I may ask for advice in the future.

Going to decision day tomorrow (for admitted students) what do you recommend that I do? by darknite38in UCDavis

[–]tdk1007 0 points1 point ago

Talk to people!

An advisor could point you to a professor's office hours if you want to drop in and ask questions. Or just ask random people on campus.

Walk around downtown if you can fit it in.

High School Senior. Need help deciding. Why UC Davis? (Accepted into CPE) by shiroihollowin UCDavis

People at both universities are very friendly and welcoming. I still talk to my friends from freshman year and try make trips down to SLO whenever I can. I would say Cal Poly has less campus activity because everyone is really focused on classes and they don't pour the same time into extracurriculars. Davis and SLO are great towns.

Cal Poly is in the CSU system and they are starting to get hurt by the budget cuts. Students voted to raise fees by a few hundred dollars to try and compensate. Tutiton was $2,500/yr in 2006 and this year it's around $5,500/yr. From what I have heard, some classes have furlough days (random days cancelled).

UC's have had it much worse. Tuition was around $7,000/yr in 2006, it may hit $22,000/yr by 2016. Departments are having to cut back on purchasing new equipement, bringing in guest lectures, even having course evaluations to rate your professors. We don't have furlough days but the budget problems are starting to show.

I switched to technocultural studies because I am into media and art and I really don't like chemistry, calculus, physics, etc. I would have stayed at Cal Poly and done something else, but it is damn near impossible to change to a different college (engineering to business or humanities). Technocultural studies is like a 180 degree turn from engineering, but it's something I am far more interested in.

I don't know much about the engineering here at Davis, I suggest talking to an upperclass engineering student. What field are you geared towards btw?

Your opportunities after undergrad will be amazing at Cal Poly. It has a strong recognition in engineering firms, professors know their stuff, students produce pretty crazy senior projects, and it's a pretty hands on school.

Its really hard to say, but from my own experience I feel that Cal Poly is a much harder school, and it pays off with it's post college opportunities. Davis is a much more enjoyable place, and a lot less stressful. People go far in both schools, its your own drive that will take you places.

I love it! A lot of people think I am crazy for transferring straight into TCS, but its a really cool program.

It seems to split into studies and production.

There are courses on media studies, sociology (how technology affects society), surveillance studies, etc.

But there are also production courses focused on film making, experimental music, animation, circuit bending.

I went to Cal Poly my freshman year as a materials engineering student.

I found that the faculty was unfriendly and often rude. There was not a lot of activity on campus. It is extremely hard to change majors. There was hardly any diversity in terms of student population as well as what people majored in (almost all engineering or sciences). Cal Poly is a well recognized school for engineering and has not been hit as hard by budget cuts like the UCs. The surrounding area is gorgeous, and the weather is great year round (60~70s).

I transferred into Davis as a Technocultural studies major last year so I can't really speak for engineering here at Davis, but the campus is much more diverse and active, taking courses outside of your major is encouraged, and professors are very friendly/approachable. The atmosphere here is much more relaxed, where as SLO everyone was pretty stressed out.

But I am giving biased advise, so take it with a grain of salt. Feel free to ask me specifics!

I find it helpful to have a handful of large flash drives will all the patches and install files people need.

I don't understand how people say davis is boring and there is nothing to do. There is an event planned out for just about every weekend of the school year.

The town is going to be what you make of it, if your bored then host something.

The journalism program at Cal Poly is pretty small, and they have a pretty good newspaper (they print it on campus as well). Cal Poly is heavily focused on engineering and sciences, so the liberal arts or humanities communities are small.

Most people interested in journalism at Davis are communications majors and get involved in The Aggie, AggieTV, or KDVS. There is not as much direction and guidance, but you learn to strike out on your own and empower yourself.

Yeah, I don't know. That is a tough decision. Best bet would be to call up some journalism & communications professors and ask for their students contact info so she can get a better idea. I would also suggest not going into journalism because positions are being cut, competition is cut throat, and it doesn't pay well.

Well Westwood has its share of actual homeless people right off campus.
