Could someone explain to me, what's inherently wrong with 1700 people coming over here and working in the mines? by DiggSuxNowin australia

[–]tailor_this 1 point2 points ago

I understand economics. I'm merely pointing out that there is a labour shortage that can't be filled currently. Its not an issue of immigrants stealing Australian jobs by offering to work for less.

I'm not necessarily all for the EMAs. I'm merely stating facts. There seem to be a lot of people here who have formed their opinions without being aware of the facts.

None of the articles I read on the new visa agreement had specific details of the agreement - so here are some facts by wogmafiain australia

Thanks for posting this! There's another thread going at the moment about this, and everyone's opinions are so uninformed - its so frustrating! Everyone talking about jobs being stolen from Australians just so the workers can be paid less...

People need to understand the facts before they can form an opinion about it.

I replied to the above comment, so I'll keep this short, but the thing is the immigrants are not going to be paid less - a condition of the government granting Rinehart the ability to import workers is on the condition that they are paid Australian wages with the same conditions. There are 1,700 workers coming over, but 8,000 people are needed for construction of the mine. A condition of the EMA being granted was also that they had to be able to prove that a concerted effort had been made to secure Australian workers first. They are also only here for the construction phase. So you can't fairly say that they are taking jobs that Australians want, because clearly there is a labour shortage that is not being met by Australians.

Edit: 1200 --> 1700 immigrant workers.

My understanding is that the mining companies have to apply to the government to be allowed to bring these workers in, and the government will only approve them if they can show they have earnestly tried to hire Australian workers first.

In addition to this, the workers are only allowed here for the construction phase. Constructing the mine will create heaps of new jobs for Australians. Also, there are about 8,000 people needed to construct the mine and only 1700 of these are being given to immigrants. They will also be paid the same and have the same conditions as Australians, so it's not about cheaper labour.

I'm an adult who hates my parents for mature reasons. What sentiments from your teenage years did you expect to outgrow, but didn't? by HonestyTimeThrowawayin AskReddit

It's not about proof of love. It's a celebration of love. I agree marriage isn't the only way to celebrate love, but I hate it when people use the "proof" argument - it's all wrong!

I completely agree. I don't mean to sound like I think my parents are bad people or anything - I love them to death and am so grateful for what they have done for me. And I know they sacrificed a lot in the process. I just don't want that for myself. I define success in a different way, and have different priorities.

People like that are perfectly able to have fun and let go - they just don't do it when they have to foresight to know there are serious consequences to their actions. And these people are some of the most interesting (and least boring) you'll ever meet, because of their minds not their actions.

As a teen I always thought my parent's idea of success was the quickest way to unhappiness - get good grades in school, get good grades at uni, get a good job, get married and have kids.

Now in my mid-20s I'm still desperate not to turn out like my parents.

I would totally do this except dinner leftovers are usually used for lunch.

Also, I think you may have accidentally unvoted or downvoted your post. You may want to fix that :)

I still consider myself a beginner so I tend to experiment with all different types of photography. Landscapes are always a lot of fun though!

For me it depends on how I try to recharge. If I spend my recharge time in front of the TV, it can take weeks. If I read or do photography, it can take as little as a few hours. I think maybe you need to find an activity that you really enjoy that can help you recharge quicker.

I completely agree. The smaller subreddits are the ones with interesting, insightful content. I'm pretty sure AskReddit is the only default I'm still subscribed to.

But if you're not a feminist, you're not welcome.

I find them all to be much too easily insulted. Any joke about gender is considered sexist, any guy who gets caught looking at obvious cleavage is a mysoginistic asshole just trying to objectify women, and anyone who is not a feminist is considered to be fundamentally against equality for women.

I also I unsubscribed from 2X, but my reasons are more because I get downvoted to oblivion each time I mention I'm not a feminist, and then get everyone telling me I really am one, I just refuse to admit it because I'm scared of getting lumped with the crazies. And they are all waaaay too easily insulted/make too big a deal out of the smallest issues.

What is the one thing you really wanted as a child that did not live up to expectations? by Sinkingfastin AskReddit

I know, right? I remember as a kid I loved to pretend I was a checkout chick. I now am a checkout chick. Disappointed is an understatement.
