He will always be 'Emergency Stop'

TIL the reason why you cannot photograph the frescoes in the Sistine Chapel has nothing to do with preserving the paintings; a Japanese company has a copyright on Michelangelo's artwork. by ThePhilosopherGurlin todayilearned

It's all part of the game, its all stocks and rights. They might have lots of money but they are just employees, looking after other peoples money.

It's a shame Terry Wogan no longer does it, sometimes he was funny.

I've noticed a couple of pubs asking for something else, both used the excuse 'we don't take those, they're too easy to forge' - I go to a lot of pubs and only recently noticed that (might be the same chain maybe).

You can trade in gold or anything someone else wants?

What is frightening to me at least, is if they deem it too serious to tell the people as it would cause massive panic, on the bright side there is nowhere else we can go if we've messed it up that badly.

Imagine if millions of people suddenly had to move away as well to the unpolluted parts of the world - it is frightening me just thinking about it.

IAMA ex-con who has severed time in British youth prisons AMAA. by HMP_AMAin unitedkingdom

[–]syuk 1 point2 points ago

Thanks for this interesting AMA. It seems very different to some of the American (and I think there was a German guy did one a while back) AMA's previous.

What kind of reading materials could you get hold of, and could you use a computer?

From what you have described in other answers it sounds completely different to some of the reports I've heard about Playstations in cells etc - was that due to the category of the prison maybe?

I don't really see why she is getting more focus than any of the other rioters, if the sentence was suspended or her father / his money had any influence on the sentence then I could see why there would be interest.

Hi, r/UK. I'm an American gun owner and I have a serious question for you to consider: by Pizza401in unitedkingdom

I guess alcohol is a big part of our culture, we are well known for our public houses (pubs, basically bars that create a sense of community with regulars, social clubs and other activities).

Anything used irresponsibly causes harm.

All guns are not banned, people use them recreationally for shooting game, target practice etc. Hunting with firearms is a big part of the culture in some regions of the UK. A large part of the UK economy is based around alcohol and we don't like things being 'banned' for the good of our health, so I think alcohol will be with us for a few years.

Then again, I always thought we would be able to smoke wherever we liked, position has totally changed on smoking over the last 10 years, so who knows?

Free banking should end, Bank official says by syukin unitedkingdom

[–]syuk[S] 5 points6 points ago

He is going to change the rules so the banks can all start charging for current accounts, at the moment if they did then they would be deemed 'anti-competitive' the guy on BBC news just said.

I'll go to a cash only / building society arrangement if this happens.
