Texas honor student jailed for missing too much school by y2questin politics

I was unaware. For Texas it's 16. Thanks.

I've lived in the city at question in the article for most of my life and I've been asking myself the same question for as long as I can remember.

Allowing people to buy a judge through elections has always seemed like a surefire way to destroy any kind of impartiality they may have. In the worst of cases, it becomes a chance at outright corruption. Terrifying.

You absolutely can but as long as you are enrolled truancy hearings can be brought against you.

It's sort of like just stopping payment on a contract when you have a perfectly reasonable clause that'd let you out of it. If you don't utilize that tool (and stop receiving the service in the meantime) then you are liable for your end of the deal.

The fact that this is a child whose parents apparently just up and left doesn't have any legal bearing on this specific charge. (which is totally fucked up of course)

Texas Again Refuses Federal Funds Despite its Busted Budget - 'Texas Department of Insurance' won't consider a federal grant to help Texans with the health insurance market, claiming it'll help its citizens with claims, appeals, etc. Some argue this doesn't make sense. by anutensilin politics

[–]subgameperfect 2 points3 points ago

What really doesn't make sense is this state's insistance on refusing it's federal money while also declaring a deficit and restricting funding from everything from library services, education, mental health, children's healthcare, etc. Sometimes I wish folks would just really look at their communities and the kind of pain these situations enable.

Saturday could be a great day in history. If all goes as planned, 4:55 that morning will see the launch of the first private aircraft to dock with the International Space Station. by vajavin space

If we're talking about operations within the atmosphere or beyond there is a clear separation between the organizational structures of SpaceX and those aerospace firms. For both Boeing and Lockheed the product is bought and then operated by the governmental agency. Even if we look at the X-47B, the Air Force's spaceplane, the government still operates and owns the product--Boeing just builds the product.

SpaceX not only owns the product upon its operation but also controls it through the entire flight sequence.

The crazy part is that SpaceX is contracted out for not only NASA flights but also a bevy of commercial operations and a variety of other governmental contracts. SpaceX represents a broadening of access to space and a novel solution to funding and delivery of a spacecraft.

While Canada may be wonderfully progressive compared to the United States, they're actions aren't necessarily those of some future wonderland. The list of canadian military operations is just a bit to show that exactly. Add in characters like Stephen Harper and it really starts to look as realistic as our reality.

Domesticated dogs are designated as Canis lupus familiaris, so they most definitely are the same species. They just are just different sub-species.

Arianespace may be a corporation but the French government has a 30% share of ownership. SpaceX may use NASA funds for operating but that's just getting paid on their contract.

Predictions about 2001 from 1901 by magadgetin TrueReddit

The prediction may have been wholly wrong in that regard but look at the type of shorthand used in texting and online today. Emoticons and initialisms abound and one can express a complex series of ideas in a short number of characters.

Repressing labor movements with martial force is pretty blatant collusion. Not to mention how Hearst's news empire was used to drum up support for the Spanish American War amongst other things.

You're totally right about most people not caring though. I'm pretty sure that was generally the case then as well.

Just a little nitpicky- The RQ-170 is anything but a hand launched drone. It's a full size jet that just happens to not have a pilot.

I think the reaction was primarily due to your comment not promoting conversation nor being uber-punny. Emphatically expressing yourself generally only goes so far.

My Encounter with a Homeless Marine, His Wife and 4 Year Old by danmaddoxin politics

[–]subgameperfect 2 points3 points ago

While I agree with you for the most part I do think that it's dangerous to paint such a wide brush when looking at the military as a volunteer only organization. In my high school we had army recruiters that came to the cafeteria nearly every day. Most of the kids who enlisted straight out had been approached by the recruiters from 14-15 yrs old and had little in the way of other opportunity due to social and economical concerns. Add to it that the entire school had an ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) testing day and I really can't put the bad decision entirely on those who did choose that route.

Had it been an entirely independent decision without such pervasive recruiting techniques then sure, but it wasn't in many of those cases.

Hey BipolarReddit, I am starting Lithium Orotate today. by Art_Dickoin BipolarReddit

I said in my original comment 4 months ago that he shouldn't do it unless he had access to getting his blood tested. I really don't get your comment at all.

The main danger that I would see in using a non-rx formulation is a lack of quality control or review. Supplements and the like that aren't regulated can be inconsistent or dangerous.

Also, if he was to get his blood tested it would be a regular expense. Considering that the initial reason for taking the orotate in the first place is a lack of insurance and employment, I can't imagine that constant diagnostics would be too approachable either.

At times we all feel separated from the world about us. Remember that they're all still there no matter how you feel. The real change comes in the manner in which you interact with others. You aren't going crazy, you aren't a loser and you are definitely not always alone.

There will be ridiculously tough times for all of us posting here and that's cool. You just have to recognize when you can't relate to those about you and take a step back. It's never the end of things, you're never truly alone, and you're not crazy. Sure, all of us have some issues in dealing with regular society, but that doesn't make us broken or crazy.

We're simply dealing with things just like everybody else, just maybe a bit more than they are. Engage, approach, challenge yourself and just fight what comes at you. You can overcome this most recent of challenges and persevere on.

First I have to say that I wish I were you. I know that may sound trite but it wasn't until just after I graduated that my friends and I finally realized that there was actually a clinical issue. As for the pessimism that makes you think they've abandoned you I would caution against using absolutes to term this situation or any other you end up in. I can't speak on your specific circumstance but I've found that the friends, recommendations, colleagues, family, etc. that I thought I lost are generally just a step away once I've made the choice to actually approach them again.

As for coping, it's a difficult issue for sure. Most days now I'm completely fine and get along with even the most complex of tasks, but there are moments when I find my ability to cope diminished to say the least. All you have to do in those times is recognize what's affecting you, what type of mood you are in and what steps you need to take to ameliorate your situation.

As for coping mechanisms to actually make sense of things when they are dark, that's partially an individual thing, Some generic advice I think I can lend is to keep a regular journal of your thoughts and moods. I have a matrix of mood and behavioral particulars that I reference for recording of the day to day state. It's a bit tedious at times but it ensures that, when I'm not depressed or manic (which with meds isn't nearly as frequent as it was before I was treated,) I can recognize common patterns in my behavior.

Using this methodology I've gotten along decently and, when things are bleak and I know I'm going to be an asshole or when things are awesome and I know I'll be irascible and pedantic, I try to keep my head on my shoulders as best I can. If that fails, I limit unnecessary interaction and work on things that don't unintentionally force me to alienate those I care about.

Not to discourage you but it will be hard. I think every human has hard times and good; ours are just exasperated somewhat. You need to be strong and face head on the problems that confront you. In the end you can have a fulfilling life and have a need to push yourself further than those without similar challenge. In the end it takes presence of mind, perseverance and a bit of luck. You'll be fine, you just need to fight.

I have to say that my thoughts on the matter are just about the same. The same types of people have (knowingly or not) ensured that I can be thankful for my life, for the shelter in which I live, for the food in my stomach and all the minutiae of experiencing life.

If there's one thing to say about this disorder, it's that I can experience all the simple pleasures and possibilities that come with existence.

This is going to get a bit convoluted but I feel that I must.

If my eye wasn't there to sense color, who's to say that color would exist in the first place?

In all seriousness though, color (as a property of our perception of the visible spectrum) is merely the property of an object to reflect and absorb certain wavelengths of light. Absent light color is a meaningless idea. By the same token, if our eyes were to perceive more than what we consider the visible spectrum, i.e. ultraviolet, infrared, etc. we would perceive the color of the object in question to be something else entirely.
