New/updated Nikon D600 specifications | Nikon Rumors by Meekoisin photography

[–]stinio 1 point2 points ago

if it's sub-$2000, I'm in. I'm looking to upgrade next year, and this is the step I would like to make, based on the shortcoming I see in my current setup.

As for the 'does it make sense for nikon to sell at this price' question, my 2¢ is that it does, mostly. I would buy a couple of lenses that year, primes, since I'm not made out of money here, but it would probably put me in the chute to getting the 12-24 f/2.8 and 24-70 f/2.8 eventually. Then again, I might really prefer shooting primes and stick with those, I'm not too sure how I feel about my 16-85 vs my 35mm f/1.8 (which I'm def. happy with).

Nikon D600 release probability now at 80% | Nikon Rumors by stinioin photography

...more D600 rumor stuff, though NR seems to think it more probable. Btw, the link is short on content, just an raising of the probability by NR.

I hear its a great body (D7k), so thats why its my baseline, but a lot can happen between now and upgrade time (hopefully next year).

I'm certainly interested, if it really happens. It'll have to be about as good as the D7000 + FF, or I'll stick with the D7k as my upgrade target.

How can I keep my lens from fogging up on humid nights shooting time lapse? by palooozin photography

[–]stinio 1 point2 points ago

anything that either heats the lens just a bit or moves the air in front of the lens. Amateur astronomers sometimes use a few resisters and a battery mounted to the back of their mirrors, or a little muffin fan mounted in the back of the telescope housing to move the air. A fairly slow moving battery operated fan pointed at the front element should do the trick. You could try looking at some of their solutions for other ideas.

edit: read DerPanzerfaust's comment, his is more detailed that what I'm saying!

For every day walk around photography what essential lenses and items are in your camera bag? by anglin_azin photography

[–]stinio 1 point2 points ago

I take it all, which isn't that much, crop body, 35mm lens, 16-85mm zoom, lens pen, extra memory. Usually I have the 35 mounted. When I get another lens, I'll probably stick with this kit.

[–]stinio 1 point2 points ago

^ this, if I have to carry a bag, I go for a empty backpack that I keep my jacket in when it gets too warm, and then any shopping that the gf or I do gets deposited in the backpack. I definitely prefer to go minimal if I'm going to be out all day.

Replacing my Nikon 18-105 VR with a 16-85 VR, any experiences with this lens? by apiratenamedbobin photography

[–]stinio 1 point2 points ago

I've been shooting with it for about a year, I'm pretty happy. I also use the 35 1.8, which I am very happy with. I'm not sure how the chromatic aberration compares with other zooms, but I pretty much always check "remove CA" in LR. Two things I will look for in the future when/if I upgrade: faster max aperture (for a narrower dof), and a bit more sharpness (the 35 is a fair bit sharper). Just my 2¢.

Nifty fifty for D5100? by charltownin photography

[–]stinio 5 points6 points ago

well, if you usually shoot at 55mm on the kit lens, then the 50 is probably the lens you would like best. You could try setting the kit lens to 35 and keep it there (with gaffer tape or a rubberband), and see if you like that too, to help you decide which lens. I have the 35 f/1.8G for my D40 and love it. I'm planning on getting the 50 f/1.8G this summer too.

btw, all the numbers on lenses are in the same units (no crop factor included), it's the physics focal length of the glass in the lens.

Great news everyone! We've (potentially) solved a problem! by aeonblackin photography

[–]stinio 4 points5 points ago

I think keeping a consistent name week to week is a good idea. Your suggestions are good. I might phrase it in the following way, but I'm not sure it matters. "Any/All Questions (don't be shy): week of blah/blah" and "Just pics: week of blah/blah". And follow that with boilerplate text (briefly) explaining the point and inviting those that might be nervous to post (they do exist). Just my 2¢.

question on crop factor and focal length by stinioin photography

thanks, this is what I was getting at, sorry if my wording was wrong. I'll read the articles you link to and may bring back further questions. Thanks!

question on crop factor and focal length by stinioin photography

[–]stinio[S] 1 point2 points ago

yeah, that's what I thought, but I haven't seen a discussion of how then the image is effected when you step back a couple of paces to get the framing you want. That should somewhat lessen the distortion of that 10mm lens on a V1, no? This is the part that I'm wondering about.

If you could only recommend three sources to learn photography technique and composition, what should they be? Web, books, video? by pavinrthewayin photography

[–]stinio 3 points4 points ago

I recently (late 2010) started from a similar place (D40, kit lens). First, play, a lot. Decide if you want to shoot raw (I recommend it) and get a good program (I use Lightroom, but there are other excellent choices) and play with that too. After that, I read The Photographer's Eye, and other similar books. It was difficult to tell if a book was going to be really useful to me until after I read it. I also like David duChemin's books quite a bit. For me, the difficult thing has been figuring out what do I want to say, and how to say it. Also, a prime lens really helps, I got the 35mm f/1.8G, and still love it a year later. It's what I keep on the camera, but I also ended up getting the 16-85mm zoom. I like that wide angle. Most of all, keep it fun! That's what's kept me in it.

TL;DR: get some books from the library by Michael Freeman or David duChemin. Play, a lot and don't worry about what others think. Get a prime lens.

Lightroom 4 Beta 1 by jhofkerin photography

[–]stinio 0 points1 point ago

well, the beta is beta, it keeps crashing on one image that I'd like to try the selective moire reduction on. I can't even get past the 'convert to 2012 process' (paraphrase) dialog. I'll just skip that one for now and play with other image...

played with it a bit this morning, and finally was able to get the edit I wanted on a pic that I took last summer. I find the new controls much more intuitive, I'm eagerly awaiting the release so I can start really using it and trusting it!
