TROPHY CASE

NHL 13 will have REAL TIME presentation - plus some more awesome info by KidShowtimein EA_NHL

[–]steve93 1 point2 points ago

One thing that always inked me is how small the ice feels. I get that it'd be boring to make it too large, but you can get up/down the ice so fast it feels too unrealistic.

On the PK it's very easy to get the puck out of the zone with a slapper at the board, in real life it's much easier to keep the puck trapped once you have position down low.

I doubt they'll fix that because it could slow things down too much, but it's always been a gripe

Nbc makes the least ad revenue in prime time of all the major networks. They didn't cancel community because while it has a smaller audience, it has a steady and known audience. It can sell ads based on an almost guaranteed viewership. They think this move will allow it to stay afloat long enough, and appeal to a big enough audience for syndication.

maybe Chevy said he'd quit I'd they didn't get rid of Dan and NBC thinks it wouldn't survive without him. Regardless they aren't tanking a prime time show to cancel it, they would just cancel it

Conservative Think-tanks Launch Campaign to Turn Americans Against Wind Energy: Documents show for the first time that local anti-wind groups are co-ordinating and working with national fossil-fuel funded advocacy groups to wreck the wind industry. by davidreiss666in politics

[–]steve93 2 points3 points ago

I live in Pennsylvania where a wind farm was placed on a nearby mountain top. I think it looks neat, and far from being considered a monstrosity. In fact, I think the fact that we can use the otherwise unarable landscapes to generate energy is a testament to our ingenuity.

Of course, in flat areas they might look worse, and take up land that can otherwise be used for farming. Of course, large chunks of farmland in this country are taken up by corn used for ethanol anyway... So between using land for clean energy, and inefficient ethanol I'll take the wind energy.

I was once told, "Your ram is infected with spyware, you'll have to replace it". What is the most outrageous diagnoses a computer technician has ever given your computer? by kalkbayhaaiin AskReddit

[–]steve93 4 points5 points ago

Was once told by a support technician that we'd have to wipe out and rebuild our entire media array after they gave the wrong instructions on what to do after a failed hard drive to have it rebuild. This array contained about 3tb worth of news stories and paid commercial spots (i work for a news affiliate).

I needed to boot to gparted and change a boot flag.

I was told to find a certain switch in my building because it needed a firmware update and reboot. After being certain it was not in my building, and being sent on a wild goose chase for a few hours he updated me that the switch is at a different location.

2012 vs. 1984: Young adults really do have it harder today - The Globe and Mail by Tarretin worldnews

[–]steve93 0 points1 point ago

Certainly understandable in your case, however I urge anyone who can to start as soon as possible. I still have a lot of student loan debt, but as soon as my first employer offered to start contribution match I maxed out. It's tough losing the extra 5% of my salary, but the benefits will far outweigh the pain I felt in my early 20s

for what its worth, whatever age you are now, should be when you start saving for retirement. If you have a job with 401k, max it out, also max your contribution to an IRA starting now. Waiting in either of those will be the worst financial decision you will ever make. You'll feel some financial pain now, but will reap the best rewards later in life.

you get the math, and future value of money, so why you do assume you should wait until 30 to start?

Reddit, I am planning to get a kitten and I have a two year old kid at home. My wife is afraid that it could be harmful for the kid. Should i be concerned? by adangoin AskReddit

[–]steve93 -1 points0 points ago

There certainly is a risk of toxoplasmosis. Of course, the risk isn't super high. I've got 2 cats and a pregnant wife, I've been on litter box duty for the better part of 2 years, so low risk there. Regardless, keep the kid away from the liter box, and empty it daily.

If your cat is an outdoor cat and infected, the parasite in the feces is most risky 1-2 days later, emptying daily and washing properly greatly lowers the risk as well.

In short, be careful with poop

Yesterday at the supermarket, a woman told off another woman standing in the 1-8 items line for having more than 8 items. What fairly harmless event would set you off? by yamz66in AskReddit

[–]steve93 1 point2 points ago

I get what you are saying, but regardless of how many extra wrong "merge points" people create, there will always be one at the physical merge area. Since that is where the merge is expected, it's more efficient to take turns and merge there.

When people swing there car into any opening, the cars behind them planning to fill that opening and have to hit there breaks, causing a ripple effect behind them.

Because of this, every car that joins at the real merge point saves aggregate time for the whole flow of traffic. Everyone who joins at their own made up spot causes a net increase in total congestion time.

[–]steve93 1 point2 points ago

No, if everyone followed the rules, it would increase overall efficiency for traffic flow. Even though most refuse to follow the rules and merge early, there is still a net benefit every time someone merges properly.

Say a proper merge takes 1 second/car, but an improper merge causes a small hump for those behind and and takes 2 seconds/car. Every car that goes all the way to the physical merge point gives a net benefit of 1 second for the overall traffic congestion.

[–]steve93 1 point2 points ago

Sorry to chime in between you two, but itreference, you are missing the obvious here. You seem to think people merging early, or whenever they see an opening should magically become the new "merge point". Whenever you create a new merge point, you are slowing down traffic. No matter what, the physical merge point will ALWAYS be a merge point. Every other one created is the wrong one, and is slowing down traffic.

Merge point mergers are the ones following the rules, the rest of the people just think they are. I'm not doing it to be rude, or to cheat, I'm doing it because it's the most effective way to do things. If I gain tons of time because other people are following the wrong rules, bonus to me.

It's not like cutting in line at all. It's like there are two lines, and one cashier, who alternates lines to pull from. Everyone lines up in the left line for some unknown reason assuming it's the right thing to do. On top of it, they get mad at the person going past them all to the right line. If they acted rationally, and filled up both queues, no one would skip ahead, and things would move more smoothly.

BBC News - Blackberry-maker RIM reports $125m loss by SPavlinain business

[–]steve93 2 points3 points ago

Agreed, as soon as iPhones had exchange support, Blackberry lost. They stayed on their perch believing business users would never want to leave them. When business users wanted the new toy everyone had, they jumped ship and haven't looked back.

I don't think there is anything Blackberry could do to gain market share back, aside from major innovation.

coal is a great way of heating homes if you take proper precaution. My family used it all my life, hosed down the coal bin regularly to reduce dust. No allergies, no cancer. My grandfather had coal heat and had cancer, but he also smoked and was a coal miner. Again, correlation and causation.

coal is cheap, and makes the whole damn house warm. Now I've got my own house and I greatly miss warm floors in the winter.

Capital Gains vs. Ordinary Income by icko11in Economics

[–]steve93 1 point2 points ago

Well you don't buy a new tv in hopes of selling it for more than it's worth. Same goes for a computer, car, camera...

You buy shares of a company, a house you can fix and sell, and similar things in order to make a profit from your money. That profit becomes income, and is then subject to tax. I feel that tax should be lower than standard income tax, because that money was already taxed when I earned it in the first place.

Capital Gains vs. Ordinary Income by icko11in Economics

[–]steve93 0 points1 point ago

Yes, once you're taxed on earning that income, you shouldn't have to be taxed again at the same rate because you used that money wisely (Investing it vs buying a new computer).

It's a murky issue. If work a job, pay income taxes, and save up money, why should I be taxed at the same rate when I use invest that money and it earns a profit?
