So...my grandmother just gave me her old DPNs from when she used to knit in China, what can I make with these superlong needles? by Chocklatesoopin knitting

[–]starcastic 3 points4 points ago

My sister in law gave me a bunch of those from her mother, too (thailand). I have NO IDEA what to do with them, besides just have them sit there.

Though a friend suggested the other day to use them to kill vampires. Makes sense.

Ridiculous Instructions by notpandorain knitting

All my work is on my interchangables.

I have small dpns for picking up when I rip out socks, for doing small ami's, and for icords.

k80k80k80 is right on how to do an icord. This is what I used when I learned how to do an icord. http://www.knitting-and.com/knitting/patterns/stitches/icord.htm

Wait, what? Flipping your needles for an i-cord?

Two short-ish dpns. k3 (or 4, w/e), push needle all the way through, repeat. You never turn your work on an i-cord.

[–]starcastic 16 points17 points ago

I would have done an i-cord. They are actually pretty fun to make.

You know what, if it was just a drawstring, I'd do what I did for all my yarn ball sacks: a crochet chain. Tada, drawstring ahoy!

So, r/crochet, I just found out I've been crocheting incorrectly for the past 10 years. Anyone else ever do a massive crocheting facepalm? by littlehobbitfeetin crochet

I make all of my ami's inside out. I actually think they look better that way.

He might actually do well there. I think it was great that we went ahead with Luck.

Those numbers really do just look like they gave crayons to a child and told them to draw 0-9.

I'm really trying to not be biased here... but the Broncos jerseys are fucking retarded looking. The numbers look off somehow, like a kid drew them on in crayon.

Looking for a Doctor Who pattern by hitchcocklikedblondsin knitting

[–]starcastic 2 points3 points ago

This is actually a really good pattern. Crochet is quite easy to learn and once you have the hang of some very basic principles (inc and dec, really), you know everything you need to in order to make ami's.

To do this pattern, I believe all you need to know how to do is:

  • Single Crochet
  • Single Increase
  • Single Decrease
  • Magic loop (different from knitting's magic loop!)

More offseason filler. What is the story you will tell your kids/grandkids about football? by Pup420in nfl

And don't just focus on the catch part - watching Eli during that play is MORE exciting, IMO. He almost goes down a couple of times, but just keeps standing, in the end. It was amazing.

Oh holy jesus, that's the one where we were down by 18 points at halftime v Patriots. I still talk about that game.

I remember exactly where I was and the emotions I was feeling - how HORRIBLE it felt at halftime. That game will be told to my children someday. Definitely.

As promised, the first panel of my Journey scarf! by LolCamAlphain knitting

[–]starcastic 0 points1 point ago

I would doubleknit in just red/yellow. Duplicate stitch the white on.

It is POSSIBLE to do fair isle while double knitting, but it is a ginormous pain in the ass. The hardest part is to get the first stitch right and to carry the other yarns correctly. But good news is that you would be carrying them through the middle, so you couldn't see it.

Actually, for this one, I would attempt dk/fair isle. There's enough white that I think it would be okay. But since I've never heard of this game besides for scarf purposes, I don't think I'm going to be trying it out anytime soon.

Also - what's the point in a one-sided scarf? Something like this is bound to flop over and then what do you get? Bleh! Wrongside! If you're not going to doubleknit, at least do it in the round, with two pattern repeats and a purl stitch in between.

My wife is disabled due to a crash accident that happened 4 years ago. Is it wrong of me to want to move on with my life? by ThrowawayAcctforeverin AskReddit

[–]starcastic 1 point2 points ago

Did I say it was? No. I said he was an empty shell of a person, which he is. He has no personality (literally). The only things he does is sleep, eat, and shit himself. He doesn't talk to anybody or interact with anybody unless forced to.

I was not trying to give advice to someone who is looking for an excuse to cheat on their partner. I was trying to help someone who is in an incredibly difficult situation.

My mom is dealing with something similar. Her husband had a severe brain injury followed by at least 2 strokes. He needs 24 hour care. He can get in and out of bed, into his wheelchair. He cannot feed himself or clean himself or...do anything. She's been doing this for 2, maybe 2.5 years now. I can't even remember exactly when it all happened.

She moved across the country with him to be closer to our family. She has someone come in once a week so that she can get out of the house. My grandparents try to come down 1-2 times/week so that one of them can stay with him and the other can take my mom out to get her errands done.

She has set herself a time limit on doing this. Come November 2013, if he is still alive, he is going into a home. She knows that all of the disability he gets will go to the nursing home, and she will have to start over with a new job in a new place. But she set herself that time so that she has something to look forward to.

Her husband is not the man she married. He is an empty shell of a person and is incredibly depressing to be around.

Both you and her are stronger than I could ever be. Remember that you ARE strong, and that if people tell you otherwise...screw them. Most people can't even imagine what you've done, and continue to do, every day.
