"Shipley said investigators are trying to determine whether Pettigrew had reflective clothing on or had operating lights during her pre-dawn ride, but it was not obvious at the scene that she did."

Wake-up, cyclists! If you're riding in the dark, you better have lights on your bike, and reflective clothing is even better. And riders who don't have lights on when required by law for motor vehicles ought to be cited.

Big Alcohol Donates Money To Fight Legalization Of Pot. When will Big Pizza step up? by frycookin reddit.com

That's what big petrol did to squelch production and use of ethanol in automobiles, by pushing the US Government to enact prohibition. http://www.stargatezero.com/forum/index.php?topic=2359.0;wap2

When the people who use tasers on grandmas or illegally wiretap innocent people from the NSA look themselves in the mirror, the person staring back at them is Adolf Hitler. That must be a tough pill to swallow for so many 'Americans' willing to participate in evil... seeing Hitler in themselves. by [deleted]in politics

Godwin's law, as explained in The Economist magazine: "A good rule in most discussions is that the first person to call the other a Nazi automatically loses the argument."

Why not Pyth-on-Rails? by nousplacidusin ruby

Yehuda makes an excellent case for the syntactic elegance of Ruby with respect to metaprogramming. Many features of Rails take advantage of this to add dynamic behavior to classes. While I'm sure that Rails could be implemented in its entirety in Python, I doubt it could be done with the same level of conciseness.

Overlooked? The unit of magnetic flux density (tesla) is named after him. He joins the ranks of Faraday, Ohm, Volta, Ampère, Watt, Newton, Joule, Curie, Kelvin, and Coulomb by being one of the very few scientists that have a unit of measure named in their honor.

"Agreed, but the vast majority of USA voters want it optional and affordable, which of course is impossible."

I don't buy that. The only demographic that seems against the idea of mandatory or universal health care is young healthy people (a key Reddit demographic for sure). A CBS/NYT poll two years ago reported 64% of respondents agreed that the US Government should guarantee health care for all: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/03/01/opinion/polls/main2528357.shtml

Health insurance should be mandatory and affordable. There's already precedence for mandatory insurance. Many states require registered autos to be insured. Many mortgage lenders demand homeowners to carry insurance as well (and in some cases, mortgage insurance as well).

I'm left breathless from the extent the breakup of the AT&T monopoly has been undone. The seven Baby Bells are now merged into three, with AT&T being one of them (recall that the '84 decree severed the parent company from all of the regionals). Long distance as a business has given way to cellular, with AT&T being one of the major players. And regulation has hardly kept up, leaving the Death Star with even more control than it had 25 years ago.

That said, hardware manufacturers should be free to make deals with companies as they wish. If Apple wishes to limit its share of the cell market by locking out other US carriers, so be it.

At the very least, we need to outlaw the practice of insurance companies denying coverage on the basis of preexisting conditions and chronic illness.
