Please report one million moms as a hate organization...they should lose their facebook page. by DaveMagee83in atheism

That St. Paul was sexist and the church is also? Is that your point? I agree, but feel that invoking this to tell women to shut up makes us sexist,

If it has no relevance to what they're doing (and it sure as hell doesn't have anything to do with a facebook page, why shouldn't they ignore it? Last I checked, facebook isn't a church.

But however you spin it, it strikes me that you're telling people that they have to follow your interpretation of the verse. And you're basically telling them that as women they have to shut up. Seems that this is the behavior we should be against.

Your intrerpretation of their book tells them to shut up. You disagree because you don't believe it has legitimacy, and they disagree because they don't think that interpretation has legitimacy. So you're saying they should shut up based on something nobody thinks.

Because religion is privileged. This is just more holding the atheist to far higher standards than the theists.

Only in the specific aspect that I don't expect atheists to ram the bible down people's throats.

The FAQ would disagree with you on what atheists believe. So would most of the people here. I'm in no way defending 1 Timothy 2:12. I'm in fact attacking its use because I consider it sexist and insulting.

As far as I can see it, a Christian at least has the excuse of believing what they preach. An atheist doesn't. He's telling people to believe what nobody believes.

76 things banned in Leviticus (tattoos, eating fat, mixed fabrics, sacrifices to Molek)... by jamesrbukin atheism

  1. Touching the carcass of any of the above (problems here for rugby) (11:8)

Why is it problem? We stopped using pigs bladders a few years back.

You know, a lot of these I have no problem with a ban (lying, incest, slander), and would expect that most of those who oppose gay marriage will have violated very few of them. I can say with certainty that I've never planted different seeds in the same field. Don't think I've mixed cotton with linen either.

Why?

This was instruction to timothy on the running of the church. Not general every day advice.

It annoys me when people use Bible quotes without having a clue what they're about. When atheists do it it's even more hypocritical.

The right to freedom of speech isn't a legal thing. It's a principle. It's a principle that's backed up by laws, including the US constitution, but freedom of speech informs the law, not the other way round.

Are One Million Mums free to speak? Are they more or less free if there are certain forums where we makes a point of removing them? Who are we to say what should and shouldn't be permitted in forums that we have only a minimal involvement with?

Is silencing those we disagree with really the best way to deal with them?

Google doesn't lie, molest my kids, or ask me to kill in its name. Oh, and Google pays taxes. by sci101in atheism

[–]squigs -1 points0 points ago

Protip: shifting profits overseas to avoid taxation is not illegal.

Neither is operating a religion. Point is, that Google is shifting money around and paying a pittance in taxation. If you're critical of a religion for not paying taxes then you can't give Google a pass.

My main problem here would be the "it's a fantasy" reveal.

I've never liked that. We know it's a fantasy. That's the whole point of fantastical films. We buy into them on the understanding that it's not real. Telling us it's not real feels like they're destroying the illusion. we know

That's what it's there for. If we didn't have it, people might end up joining a religion that expects them to be religious.

Our monarch is head of the church, we have an official church (well England does), and a lot of the culture has been strongly influenced by Christianity.

It's suggested from time to time. You might hear it mentioned on Any Questions if there's been something about Blasphemy in the news recently. Usually they'll add a qualifier. e.g. "ostensibly Christian nation"

I really need your help. How the hell do I get all of this glass out of my apartment? by CityOfOnein AskReddit

Sticky tape might be able to remove the small bits of glass. Put a strip down, pull it off immediately otherwise you have glue stains to deal with as well.

They always illustrate these with a Predator or a Reaper. The drones being deployed tend to be much smaller, simpler, cheaper devices.

Met to start fingerprinting people on the street as identity check by fact_huntin unitedkingdom

[–]squigs 0 points1 point ago

I think the reason they're saying they won't is that these aren't actually particularly useful records. They're not hugely accurate. There are likely to be thousands of people who match to the level of accuracy they work at.

It's adequate to confirm that you're probably who you say you are, (since you have no way of knowing who the other hundreds of people who match you are), but, there will be hundreds of people who could match if you don't give any other ID.

I may be wrong. This is just what I've seen with other fingerprint based systems.
