About face in Quebec: New poll shows support for Charest's tuition increases has dropped 41 points in six days by kungfugroundsquirrelin canada

[–]squidgy 2 points3 points ago

Seriously, I support the hike, and as a resident of downtown Montreal I'm pretty anti-protest at this point (or, more accurately, pro-sleep), but Charest is out of his fucking mind. Whatever the intent of the bill, the anti-assembly sections sabotaged the entire thing, I really have no idea what he was thinking with that. Those sections haven't even done any good, the SPVM declares the protests illegal but won't do anything to stop them so long as they're peaceful, so now we just have even more protesters out every night. He also threw away any hope of being re-elected, practically ensuring the PQ gets in. Nice job, Charest.

I'm still in favour of the tuition hike, but it's pretty hard to disagree with the protests when Charest pulls shit like this.

There's an account from the firefighters that were first on the scene that I can't find at the moment - they honestly didn't know. They were picking up those chunks of graphite with their bare hands and loading them into trucks until they were told otherwise.

He had a play (forget which, but it was a comedy) with Catherine Tate. My parents saw it and apparently it was absolutely brilliant. Now I'm eternally jealous.

I really hope we don't see cop burnout as any sort of victory. The vast majority of cops are good public employees who want to help out. Fighting them will not get us anywhere. by kylemacmacin montreal

[–]squidgy 0 points1 point ago

Yup. The goal of at least some of the protesters is to provoke the police, it makes their cause look all the better and gets them a shitload of media attention. A peaceful march at this point doesn't get in the news, that's just a daily occurrence. A riot where a student gets a baton to the face is far better PR.

Huge sinkhole opens in Montreal street after student protest passes by theaceofacein canada

I'd like to think the only reason they're connecting the two is that its a really damn good thing that a 4 meter deep hole didn't open while a few thousand people were walking on it.

A sealed vehicle with an inch or more of steel surrounding the cabin is quite useful. It offers at least some protection against both ambient radiation and fallout particles in the air, far more than one of those canvas-covered lorries.

That said, I doubt any of that even factored into the decision. That's what they had nearby, that's what they sent. The military didn't know anything about what they were heading in to, let alone about how to protect against it.

Actually the cash thing is 100% Funcom, look at Age of Conan. EA has next to nothing to do with TSW, mostly because its a direct competitor to SWTOR. They're publishing it and thats about it.

The same principle as sending a picture from your phone really. The rovers (well, rover now) don't have very powerful radios, so they send whatever data/photos they've gathered up to the Mars Odyssey Orbiter when it passes over, which in turn uses its high-power antenna to transmit everything back to Earth.

I would assume the contempt charge was mentioned due to the potential for a $50,000 fine. In an article covering possible financial difficulties, that seems fairly relevant.

Fallout from Quebec student protests could mean trouble for Harper. Rebirth of Quebec Separatism? by Matazumain canada

I'd almost rather live in a broke country, than have any association with the RoC.

And people wonder why this single, unified, homogenous region known as "the RoC" tends to find Quebec to be full of arrogant pricks...

Nadeau-Dubois would make a very good politician. He's got the charisma, and more importantly the complete lack of scruples when it comes to getting what he wants. The frightening thing is that he's got an entire army of people like the authors of that manifesto ("article" doesn't quite seem like the right term) believing every word he says. Most of the incitement provisions of Bill 78 are aimed squarely at him and what he's been doing so far.

Between his various comments "understanding" the vandalism and bombings to Paul Rose "somehow" getting up to the CLASSE mic and being let speak at a rally, I honestly wouldn't be surprised if his endgame is to keep escalating this until someone is killed.

It's a shame really, because one kid has effectively managed to discredit an entire movement's cause.

All of your sources are very biased. In fact, I am offended by how blatantly you presented your biased sources.

Get over yourself. All sources have some kind of bias because they're all written by human beings. Take the information from the source along with the knowledge of where its from, combine it with what you've learned from other sources and draw your own conclusions. It's called critical thinking. If you reject sources that don't fit your own biases out of hand, you're hardly credible yourself.

My friend just got laid off from Bioware (SWTOR Project) by DeadTORin gaming

[–]squidgy 12 points13 points ago

There's a difference between "Bioware" Bioware and Bioware Austin. The latter is more or less a wholly different studio with the Bioware label slapped on. I've never understood why they did that, you make short term sales off the name while ending up with situations like this, which do a hell of a lot of damage to said name.

As for the "real" Bioware, they're not exactly blameless. They have a lot of control and autonomy within EA, partly from being their own label, and partly because EA arguably needs them more than they need EA.

Can you provide a reference for this assertion?

Here, the first google result and its written by a Psy.D. There's also a huge amount of anti-vax style FUD out there aimed at schizophrenics advising them that the anti-psychotics are actually harmful (or part of some conspiracy or something), and that they should stop taking them in favour of natural remedies or some other bullshit.

The quote from the article, "of the 300,000 people in Canada who live with some form of schizophrenia, the vast majority lead quiet, law-abiding lives hoping for some quality of life," suggests you are incorrect.

This isn't talking about the vast majority of schizophrenics, this is talking about one who, in a delusional state, murdered, beheaded and consumed a human being. I think it's safe to say that he poses a bit of a higher risk than your average schizophrenic if he were to go off his treatment.

I've seen a few documentaries that have interviewed former SS... they're surprisingly open about everything. Some of them openly admit they hated (or in one case still hate) the Jews, others just say they were following orders. I can't help but think that being the perpetrators of such horror did some permanent psychological damage though, the way they speak about what they did is just chilling. No emotion, no remorse, just facts. One of them was talking about how they herded the Jews into the gas chamber at either Birkenau or Treblinka (can't remember), and when he described opening the door afterwards and seeing the bodies of men, women and children that he'd been speaking to minutes earlier, it was as if he was mentioning a mere curiosity he'd noticed.

My boyfriends sister is visiting and brought over her cat. by chaneenin pics

[–]squidgy 46 points47 points ago

I had a Siamese when I was a kid. She weighed maybe 7lb. Our friends brought over their ~200lb St. Bernard one day. We were a bit worried that the cat might get hurt or something, the dog was very kind and laid back, but the weight difference alone was a bit concerning.

Suffice it to say by the end of the day the poor dog had been fucking traumatized by that cat. She started off curious about the cat, sniffing at her and whatnot. That lasted about 5 seconds, until the cat decided she'd had enough and slashed the dog across the nose, hissed, and ran off. The rest of the day involved the cat sneaking up on the dog and doing little hit-and-run slashes. Nothing deep enough to actually hurt the dog, but from that day on she was absolutely terrified of cats.
