At least the UK government are helping small businesses, I'm two days late paying the VAT - I asked for some leeway a week ago, they said they'd get back to me but never did... I've been fined £4,000 and told there's nothing they can do. And more... by eh777in business

Well, I do have sympathy with your situation, but you do owe this money. If the government or whoever were giving out grants to help you hire, or something like that then that'd be one thing, but here they're effectively bailing out your mis-management. You could have allocated 20% of your income to paying off your VAT bill and not been in this situation. You could have badgered HMRC further to give you payment options. You say you're in a good relationship with your bank manager yet they won't provide an overdraft facility? And your accountant never gave you any idea how much your VAT bill might approximately be/you weren't tracking what your VAT bill might be yourself?

Like I say, I do have sympathy, but my experience (and that of other UK businesses I know) is that there are grants and funds available for those that want to use them to grow their business. I'm not sure why you'd expect assistance in this situation though, because they'd basically be bailing you out.

If you approach the HMRC before the fact then they are usually more amenable to some kind of payment plan. In fact, our accountant has told us that over the past couple of years they've been more likely to do so.

We are turning over a little more than you but even last year our bank would give us a loan or an overdraft, and we were two years old then.

A few of suggestions which are probably too late:

  • Get a good accountant
  • Build a relationship with your bank manager
  • Do not leave things in the hands of HRMC, always be proactive with them

By my previous comment you'll see I'm not necessarily that enthusiastic about ST1. But you've already developed the app with a single developer and now you're going to scrap it, write it in different tech, and put a whole team on it? Why? Can't your really good dev spend a day evaluating ST2 in the context of the failings of ST1 and then plot an upgrade path? I understand you've had a frustrating experience with ST but it would seem wasteful to ditch the development work which has been done so far if ST2 solves some of your problems.

ST1 came at the wrong time. Sencha were in the process of making big changes to Ext JS (adding all the MVC stuff) and ST1 was kind of an experiment in that area. They left loads of things out, but remember that ST1 was released a pretty long time ago - they got it out there and usable very quickly. ST1 has big gaps and is quite buggy, but it did help me make a decent mobile app and indeed lots of big companies have used it too.

In regard to ST2, they've extended the initial ideas in v1 (MVC, the Ext.Application stuff) and the core classes are shared with Ext JS. So I think ST1 was really "let's get this out there so people can use it though it won't be perfect" and ST2 is "ok let's do this thing properly".

Caveat: I haven't actually used ST2 in anger yet but I have used Ext JS 4 which shares many of the same ideas.

New Star Trek TV series being planned, takes place after Voyager, will ignore the last movie. by davincihin entertainment

I have no idea what this means. I added a comment which tries to make you realise that you don't understand how the "old" Trek and the "new" Trek interact. This is a discussion. I'm sorry that your viewpoint doesn't gel with mine but I think Reddit will probably manage to exist without that being the case.

You're not reading it correctly.

The new movie does have ramifications for the "old" universe. It is not a replacement for the old universe, it is a fork. Completely ignoring the movie would be to ignore not only the fork but the events in the old universe that caused the fork.

Massive Student Protests Rock UK by TimBravoin worldnews

Because money allocated to defence is never going to be re-allocated to education. There, I said it. While on the face of it, it would be a good idea, there are political and economic ramifications which aren't immediately apparent.

Exactly. Which makes me feel three things:

  1. A lot of protestors don't understand what they're protesting for
  2. A lot of protestors don't understand that due to previous financial mismanagement, this money needs to come from somewhere
  3. It would be better to amend the university system as a whole than any kind of knee-jerk reaction

A lot of the problem stems from the devaluation of university by reducing the number of vocational qualifications and turning them into full-blown degrees instead. Another issue is percentage targets of students attending university.

I personally believe that a degree should not incur any cost for those who are bright enough and work hard enough to get into university - but when they get there the qualification they receive should be worthwhile.

I'm late to the party, but this is utterly idiotic. This is not a "racket". If you don't like a product, or you feel it's too expensive, just don't buy it. If you're going to write dramatic headlines, make it about something real or something important.

I was really disappointed when I watched the first episode last night. Everything just felt a bit awkward - the acting was slightly hammy, the reveal for the criminal at the end was unconvincing, and the gay stuff was really unsubtle. I get the impression it could be a great show, but episode one didn't gel for me at all.
