The Jets & Mark Sanchez: How NOT to Develop a Young QB by MikeHoncho1in nfl

Yeah, it is way more cutthroat than anyone really wants to admit.

The Jets & Mark Sanchez: How NOT to Develop a Young QB by MikeHoncho1in nfl

[–]smhinsey 22 points23 points ago

It could be a madlib: The Jets & _____ : How NOT to ______ .

But seriously, it's impossible to tell which side is more to blame here. One thing I think we can agree on however is that Pete Carrol is the absolute master of leaving other people holding the bag while he laughs all the way to the bank before heading off to the next high paying job. He is like Emperor Palpatine with this shit.

Good camping areas in Virginia by KeyboardDogin nova

This looks pretty nice. The reason I tend to avoid Shenendoah Park is that it gets too crowded for my tastes - I don't like to go camping and have neighbors. Is that a problem here too?

Three sided wars? by quelarin history

[–]smhinsey 1 point2 points ago

There were wars in British India that might qualify, where you'd have 2 opposing Indian factions fighting one another with British forces (often sepoy units made up of yet more factions, potentially controlled by the East India Company rather than Britain itself) attempting to intervene. These are sort-of civil wars and I think if you want to count them, there are a lot of examples in the colonial period thoughout Africa, India, and the Americas. The American Civil War itself almost turned out this way, as the Confederacy was desperately seeking a foreign alliance and intervention.

Three sided wars? by quelarin history

[–]smhinsey 19 points20 points ago

I don't think there's much incentive for the 3rd party to remain independent. This is basically why the USSR was a part of the Allies during WW2.

The best example I can easily come up with is the French and Indian War in colonial North America. It was mostly Britain vs. France but the stakes were different from the perspectives of the participating tribes who didn't really much care about why France and Britain were fighting yet another war.

There are others if you're willing to play with the definitions a little, such as Korea with Chinese involvement or Vietnam with the Viet Cong as well as the North Vietnamese Army.

There are numerous other examples in history of wars where a smaller 3rd party picked sides out of necessity rather than loyalty. This can be said to be true of the minor partners in almost every alliance, particularly when you're talking about situations like Belgium during the 20th century, to take one example.

What is the most fucked up thing you have ever witnessed? by ouijalin AskReddit

[–]smhinsey 6 points7 points ago

I don't know if they thought he was just attention seeking or what, but people are assholes. I don't see how you could do that and sleep at night afterwards. I've actually heard of that happening in other instances as well.

People are just assholes, which is a terrible thing to think, but it explains so much, especially if you are a politically interested American. (May also be true elsewhere, but I lack personal experience.)

I saw someone jump in front of a subway train. It happened in slow motion. I saw on the news that the person had been hesitating and people were yelling "jump!" at him. I had my headphones on but just happened to be looking directly at it as it happened.

I believe I am witnessing a genuine phenomenon by Stevo182in UFOs

[–]smhinsey 10 points11 points ago

If it happens at a predictable time, set up a camera on a tripod and film it. You say in another comment that you're a teacher, so if you don't have a camera, borrow one from the A/V department. Really, if there's a predictable time, you have no excuse not to thoroughly document this.

This will probably not be super popular, but I think the MFLB is not all that great. Maybe I've just never learned to hit it properly or have had bad luck with the batteries or whatever, but I think it'd be worth your while to try something else.

I would recommend checking out something that gives you more control over the temperature, like the Volcano. Obviously the price isn't for everyone, but there are definitely other vaporizers that give you that kind of control. Different temperature ranges are going to produce different effects and some people prefer different temps than what others do. Different strains also work best at different temps depending on their chemical makeup.

My personal technique is to start with the fresh stuff in my Purple Days (unfortunately no longer sold, but the style is definitely out there - it's similar to the MFLB without the hassle of batteries) and then move it to the Volcano after I get what I can out of it. Due to the PD's low fixed temperature, it's good for at least several bags on the Volcano at increasing temps. This also works with the MFLB and I believe that they both operate in similar temperature ranges.

I would also suggest that you make sure to space out your hits. The low temperature vaporizers really sneak up on you, especially if your only other experience is with combustion.

Also, what's your grinder situation? Make sure you're doing a good job with that. The grinder the MFLB comes with (or came with when I got mine ~12-18 months ago, a small circular magnetic one with 3 small teeth) isn't very good. I have tried Sharpstone, Space Case, and Chromium Crusher grinders, and I recommend the Space Case.

Put something in it that will sound like ice shaking around. You could use those plastic reusable ice cubes or something like that. Put a small platform above the box using a piece of cardboard or stiff paper and drop them in on top. This also gives you cover if someone wants to look into it.

That was the X-37b which is unrelated. I believe there is one in orbit right now, but I haven't followed it all that closely so it could've landed.

Wild, as a superlative, like "that concert was wild." I still use it though.

Good Abraham Lincoln biography without all the jingoistic emancipation circlejerk? by Baby_Rakistin history

[–]smhinsey 1 point2 points ago

No problem, that is totally fair enough, it just set off "this guy might have a shady agenda" alarms. Lincoln is definitely worth learning about, I think he was the kind of guy who was the friend everyone always wishes they had.

[–]smhinsey 6 points7 points ago*

I don't really know what you mean by "jingoistic emancipation circlejerk" and I have to be honest that the particular phrasing you chose for that sort of sets me on edge (it's like asking for an FDR bio without the "jingoistic Pearl Harbor circlejerk", in that it was a crucial and formative moment of his presidency), but nonetheless, my two favorite Lincoln books are Abraham Lincoln: The Prairie Years and the War Years and Team of Rivals. The former is much more of a straight up bio, but the latter provides a lot of fascinating context and also includes a good retelling of my favorite Lincoln story, about the barn fire and his son's horse.

[CK2] 1.05 Is Up on Steam by Curious__Georgein paradoxplaza

I don't know if this is the right place to ask or not, but I have seen elsewhere that there is some benefit to not using the Steam version of CK2. Can someone fill me in on what that's all about? I could be totally misunderstanding.

Phil Plait: "I'm seriously wondering if a bunch of billionaires are about to go asteroid mining." by cursonin space

[–]smhinsey 5 points6 points ago

Bad wording on my part there, I meant the "not interesting" bit to apply to the gold standard part.

I've seen discussions about this crop up in several places today, so it may be realistic. Personally, I like to think it is because I have been telling people for years that if I ever hit the startup lottery, this is what I'd be looking at next.

What is the most novel application for this sort of material abundance that you've come across?

Phil Plait: "I'm seriously wondering if a bunch of billionaires are about to go asteroid mining." by cursonin space

[–]smhinsey 33 points34 points ago*

This is such a tremendous argument against the idea of the gold standard for currency that I can't believe I've never heard it before. What do you do when someone manages to capture an asteroid full of precious metals?

This is probably the least interesting side effect of asteroid mining, but it's fascinating to me to think about the repercussions of silver, gold, or platinum becoming as cheap as iron. E.g., what does it mean for our electrical grid if all transmission wires could be made out of silver? What if we could use gold as battery contacts for even stuff like AA batteries?

Lets hear it from the other side : As a single mom, what do I need to teach my only son? by alphaniain AskReddit

[–]smhinsey 39 points40 points ago

I'm also the son of a single mother and I came here to say something like this. My mom had me at a young age and I don't think she ever put too much thought into the impact her dating had on me. It ruined our relationship and now, with me in my early 30s, it's only just starting to be repaired. I can easily see how it could've ended up with us completely estranged.

X-Post from r/conspiracy..."Crazy idea but could this be one of the main reasons our ancient alien creators had us mining for gold ? I can imagine their oversized brains being susceptible to tumors." by sebastianpaul1787in UFOs

[–]smhinsey 8 points9 points ago*

It's not just planets. Many asteroids are composed of precious metals. We are only decades out from having the technology to capture a Kuiper Belt object containing more gold and platinum than could ever be mined from the surface of the earth. The idea that anyone would go through as much trouble to mine gold as is implied by this post is comical. If you can travel interstellar space, picking up one of these objects is trivial.

Which game have you played the most? by mkensingtonin AskReddit

Hey, I just stumbled across /r/paradoxplaza on Random. You should check it out, it covers all of the Paradox games and gets more traffic than I ever expected.

Which game have you played the most? by mkensingtonin AskReddit

[–]smhinsey 0 points1 point ago

No problem, good luck. They're good games but definitely require an investment.

My general tip for the Paradox games is, unless the thought terrifies you, to open up your save files in a text editor and poke around. It's not hard to skip tedious time consuming stuff if you just want to set up a nice scenario. Also, HoI is a lot easier to pick up if you start out as Germany.

Also keep an eye out on Gamer's Gate. It's nowhere near as popular as Steam but it has a way better selection for this genre and also has great sales on a fairly regular basis.

[–]smhinsey 0 points1 point ago

You might want to give Hearts of Iron 3: Semper Fi a shot if you like the setting. It's way easier than 2 or even 3 and there are some interesting mods too.

I picked up all of the Paradox games during one of those crazy Steam sales, so I have all of the EU expansions, but I think I'd go for the Chronicles collection that has them all. I think Heir to the Throne was the most interesting of the expansions though.

Which game have you played the most? by mkensingtonin AskReddit

[–]smhinsey 0 points1 point ago

I played the first one, but I don't think I've played 2. I think it's supposed to be sort of the "entry level" game of the Paradox grand strategy series, but between EU and HoI I just didn't have the time to learn it since even an "entry level" grand strategy game is still like 100x more complicated than your average game. Just checking the reviews makes it sound totally worth checking out though, if you're into that sort of thing and EU or Victoria don't do it for you.

Grand strategy games are a super weird niche, but I love them.
