I have my doubts you paid $25 a month for the 50 mb/s connection. That sounds more like the deal for the 15 mb/s connection.

Baton Rouge, LA, voted to raise their taxes to preserve and expand their struggling bus system. The landmark measure will nearly double transit funding by MIIAIIRIIKin urbanplanning

[–]skandalouslsu 6 points7 points ago

As a recently-former resident of Baton Rouge and someone who voted for the measure, I'm glad this passed, but I take issue with this statement:

One of the biggest differences between this successful measure and the recent failed measure in 2010 was the use of more strategic targeting of resources in key precincts. Though the campaign did deploy some resources in suburban areas with small amounts of service, mostly to blunt opposition, the brunt of their efforts focused on getting out the vote in their strongest precincts.

They didn't have to target the suburban districts because they were gerrymandered out of the vote. I can guarantee you if those districts were allowed to vote that this measure would not have passed. There were hundreds of people that showed up to vote and were turned away because their district had been axed from the vote.

I'm saying all of this because I don't want people to get the wrong impression that there was this magical coming-together to get this thing passed. The article makes it seem like we are a textbook example of grassroots outreach and something to be proud of when in reality it was nothing of the sorts. Baton Rouge has some serious problems and this is just one of them. High crime. Rampant racism on both sides. Terrible schools. Shitty public transportation. The list goes on.

Aspiring Urban Planner needs some advice where to start. by ericidin urbanplanning

[–]skandalouslsu 0 points1 point ago

As far as volunteering, look to some local non-profits in your area. Not sure where you're at, but most communities have a few non-profits that look to advance planning. They usually need help putting on public workshops. Public workshops are great experiences - for better or worse. You really get to see it all at those things.

As far as schools, I like to recommend looking in to landscape architecture programs, but I'm a little biased on that front as I am a landscape architect who does a good bit of planning. A number of the LA grad programs focus heavily on urban planning. I tend to believe planners with a background in landscape architecture have a much broader outlook on things, but again, I'm showing my bias so take it for what it's worth.

And here's where I drop LSU's name program for consideration. If you need a contact there, let me know.

Brewing industry sweetens on sour beers. - Coloradoan by Spaceman_Spliffin beer

[–]skandalouslsu 2 points3 points ago

I know a few people like to talk down on New Belgium for making mediocre beers, but Le Terroir is hands-down my favorite sour. I've had a good numberof sours and make one every year, and Le Terroir is still my favorite - even after only having it once a year or two ago.

Speaking of, does anyone know where to find it online? NB doesn't distribute in Louisiana.

So I gave my friend a bottle of my cider yesterday... by rayyeterin Homebrewing

[–]skandalouslsu 2 points3 points ago

I brought a keg of my cider out to our hunting camp last year. By the end of the night I witnessed a grown man try to plug his glasses into a phone charger.

Homebrewed cider is a beautiful but dangerous beast. I wish more people enjoyed it.

Yeah, that was my question. Jambalaya is not soup, so I was confused. Those poor souls outside of Louisiana.

This is what it should look like. I'm not a fan of tomato based jambos.

Has anyone ever had a girlfriend's father say "No" when asking for his blessing for a marriage proposal? by uncleocein AskReddit

[–]skandalouslsu 2 points3 points ago

I think it's more of a southern thing. I was born and raised in Tennessee and now live in New Orleans. My father told me a southern gentleman always asks for the father's blessing to marry their daughter. I'm sure it has some root in Old South property and aristocracy, but nowadays it's a way of showing your respect. We Southerners love our tradition. Some good, some bad.

A few years back I told Parks and Parkways where to plant about 3000 trees, a few of which were live oaks. I don't know who planted the current crop of mature trees, but in a hundred years I can take credit.

CATS passes! by CharlieCharliein batonrouge

I have seen the non-homeowner voting argument a lot lately. Doesn't make sense to me. If my landlord's property tax on my rental goes up, does my rent not also go up to cover it? My landlord's a cool guy, but I doubt he's that cool.

And do prices I pay at stores and restaurants not go up as well to offset the increase in overhead for the business?

I can understand the argument of people not paying anything for housing not being able to vote on property taxes (whether I agree or not is a different story, but I can at least understand it), but to say that all non-homeowners should not be allowed to vote is a bit over the top.
