Suggested better dates for South African public holidays. by alphanumericsheeppigin southafrica

[–]skagvark 2 points3 points ago

Throwaway comment: productivity isn't everything.

With the amount of structural stresses the average saffer lives with, I don't see harm in some days off. And if the addons to public holidays come from worker's annual leave, it shouldn't be making that much of an economic difference.

Who decided that firefox's context menu item 'properties' was no longer useful??? I must have attempted to find it on at least a dozen occasions today! Stupid new firefox..... by Mashed_upin geek

And they aren't the user base Firefox should be appealing to.

WTF? Who decides this shit? You just declare that wondering about image dimensions are something the average person doesn't need, because you say so, and also that you know best when it comes to deciding who to pitch a frikkin browser at... wut?

I don't understand the argument here, you saying the fact that for eg IE still has the properties item will make my grandma switch to FF the moment she realises that FF doesn't?

"FF, now needs a goddamn plugin to show the size of an image" <- great appeal to the unwashed masses there.

My theory? People who bother to install their own browser might just be people who wonder about things like "how big must a pic be to print on an A4" etc. People who click shit to explore.

Also, don't just declare something is useless because you are unable to think of uses. Put it to a vote, amongst the actual users, not the ones living in your head

What would you do if you were rich and never had to work again and had total freedom? by spivey378in AskReddit

[–]skagvark 4 points5 points ago

Water.

Assuming that rich means lots and lots of money and not just comfortably off, I'll be creating water-saving solutions.

The whole centralised storage (dams) and distribution of water astounds me; there are countries that have tied up more than 90% of their water supplies already, and it all goes into this inefficient system. Whole rivers are channelled into central points, purified, and pumped long-distance at great cost.

This centralised system wasn't designed to cope with the changes in weather either (bigger, but less frequent storms, meltwater drying up, severe drought interspersed with flooding etc), so better ways to manage water must be found.

I would love to fund thousands of small local research projects where local solutions to the water-based problems are found. Not fund the systems, but rather fund the research, educate, give the expertise; find ways that people can make money out of taking care of their own water.

If it doesn't fund itself it will never work in the long run anyway.

This picture shocked the whole world. No one knows what happened to the child, including the photographer Kevin Carter who left the place as soon as the photograph was taken. Three months later he committed suicide due to depression by [deleted]in pics

They were members of the Bang-bang club (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bang-Bang_Club)

Kevin Carter committed suicide because of depression with VARIOUS causes, not just because of this photo.

His suicide note mentions that he hopes to join Ken Oosterbroek, the first member of the Bang-bang club to die.

They went into truly horrible places, saw horrible things, enough to drive anyone over the edge.

See if you can find the book (http://www.amazon.com/Bang-Bang-Club-Snapshots-Hidden-War/dp/0465044131) for more info. There are other books that I can recommend if you want to understand how bad it was in the places they went to. [edit fixed where / were in first sentence]
