Honda Civic ex 2006 trunk won't open. HELP!!! by ctctct1919in cars

[–]shihchiun 1 point2 points ago

Do the rear seats fold down for trunk access?

Edit: Hah, nevermind. You need to do it from within the trunk.

Never received item, will I get a refund? by thirdrevelationin Ebay

[–]shihchiun 1 point2 points ago

And on what date was the notice left?

Ideally, I would get a refund from EBay without hanging the seller out to dry. Does that typically happen?

No, not really. eBay is very much a zero-sum game (or they wouldn't make any money).

Used 2010 Toyota Camry Hybrid (47,000 miles). Is this a good deal? by SuperHappyFunEvelynin Autos

[–]shihchiun 1 point2 points ago

before the money taken off in trading in my current car (a '99 camry which they say they'll take $1000 off for).

So they're giving you $1000 for the '99? It's worth more than that.

I sort of think getting a camry is what I want. Also, I've never owned a hybrid so I don't even know if it's worth the extra money.

So what's your goal here? Do you want a new Camry? Do you want something that gets better MPG? Do you want a hybrid?

Buying a hybrid over some other pure-gas car generally doesn't work out financially. Plus, in this situation the Camry is a fairly large car. If you want to use less gas, get something smaller and lighter.

Going to a funeral, and I have no idea what to expect. by xanoran84in taiwan

[–]shihchiun 2 points3 points ago

Well, I've been to a few funerals recently. I'm not entirely sure how much these things vary, but here's my experience:

There was a memorial service during which various Buddhist things happened. As someone who is relatively close to the deceased, you'll probably be participating. It's fairly self-explanatory; they'll pretty much show you what to do. It would definitely help if you understand Mandarin/Taiwanese, but you can get by without.

After that there was a procession to the crematorium (in Taipei, they're kind of like full-service places that have everything on a single lot). Once that's done (roughly an hour or two), you will probably be involved in placing the remaining bones/ashes into an urn (it's not as gross as it sounds).

From there, you will (probably) be travelling to the deceased's final resting place (typically on a mountainside somewhere). There are a few more rituals, followed by the symbolic burning of paper and other offerings. Once that's all over, you'll probably go somewhere to eat because that's what Chinese people do.

Dress is fairly standard though given the climate you probably won't be expected to wear a full-on suit. I'm not sure what the deal with the money is; I had nothing to do with it.

Framinghamers and Sudburyers, how long is your Morning/Evening commute if you're going to Cambridge? by DrBiochemistryin boston

It takes me about half an hour just to get to Framingham from Waltham. Figure another half hour from Waltham to Cambridge, and that's in the middle of the day with relatively little traffic.

Am I about to get taken for a ride? by yellowdart654in Ebay

[–]shihchiun 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, sounds like he just wants a better deal... Fortunately, eBay will generally require the buyer to send back the item in order to get a refund.

[–]shihchiun 3 points4 points ago

If you refuse the 50% refund, you'll probably get negative feedback and the buyer may file a claim which you may lose. It's basically extortion, but if the value of the card isn't too high you may want to just give the refund and be done with it.

What I would do is offer only a full refund if the buyer returns the card. If the buyer is pulling something he probably won't go for it; if he's legitimately upset, he'll return it.

Looking at a used 2007 Prius for only $5,995. The catch is that it has 224,979 miles on it. Is it not worth it? Would it still run well enough? by Figgotsin Autos

[–]shihchiun 0 points1 point ago

I can't find any solid numbers on the expected lifetime of the battery, but I would find out how much it will cost to replace. If it's still cheaper than going for an equivalent car with fewer miles, it may not be a bad idea.

CD/DVD burner - cheap, black, quiet? by Exavionin hardware

Just look on Amazon/Newegg and find one with a lot of positive reviews. They're pretty much commodity items these days unless you want specific features like LightScribe or whatever.

Buyer claims he didn't receive item by checoloin Ebay

[–]shihchiun -2 points-1 points ago

You're required to provide the refund first, then collect the insurance proceeds on your own time.

Delivery confirmation is not really proof of anything. All it says is that delivery was attempted somewhere, not that any specific person received the package. You need signature confirmation to be sure.

What you might try is casually hinting that mail fraud is a felony and that you will be providing the buyer's information in filing a claim.

So I just paid $450 for an iPhone that doesn't work with my cellphone carrier. by pmrypyjrtohjyin iphone

[–]shihchiun 0 points1 point ago

No, the only way to use it is with a CDMA carrier. I'm not sure if you have those in Canada.

The problem with that is that stolen phones generally have their IMEI numbers (basically an ID number) blacklisted to prevent them from being used.

Those cards are all several years old at this point. I wouldn't expect to get much for them. They may be good for certain GPU-based applications, but new cards are better.
