I want r/paintball's opinion on my next purchase by caseanatorin paintball

[–]sherlok 1 point2 points ago

I think it's more that electronic guns are capable of faster rates of fire, which will freeze a co2 tank. They also tend to have much more sensitive internals, and so 'clean', consistent air is preferred.

If you enjoyed the ion check out the GOG Extcy, it's basically a fixed up ion. I agree with the rest though, your dollar seems to go much further in the used gun realm (just because it's old doesn't mean it's bad)

How easy is it to take back to normal semi operation?

Been running this silly thing off and on for a little over ten years now. by houndstoothjacketin paintball

My first real gun. Sanded down the bolt face, removed the venturi, replaced the main springs, threw an on/off and old wgp reg on it. Sanded down the sear and replaced the trigger spring. Mighta thrown a delrin bolt in there and drilled out my valve too. Trying to run that thing at the lowest pressure possible.

That was the ultimate home project gun. I miss doing that.

Yea, I noticed a moist spot in a parking lot one day, but wasn't sure if it was mine or not. I park on a gravel driveway so that kind of stuff isn't immediately apparent. Now I know it's probably something I should watch for. Could've saved myself some money.

For future reference it was my waterpump. We got her up on the lift with someone revving the engine and the coolant had a pretty steady leak. It doesn't really explain the rattling, but I'll find that out when I go to pick it up tomorrow.

I'm curious to see if that's the original waterpump or not. I can't imagine it being, I'm at 164k miles. But who knows.

So it sounds like it's time to take it into the shop then, have them look at it.

no idea, I bought the car with ~ 123k miles on it, being a dumb kid at the time - didn't ask if he'd done any maintenance.

Sorry I should've been more clear. I removed the belts and ran the car, the sound was still there. Manually turning the pulleys felt fine, they rotated smoothly.

On the up side I discovered why my AC never worked. Apparently the previous owner removed the belt to milk more horsies out of it. Good to know.

got the belts off, however the sounds still there. It's definitely coming from the engine.

A liver recipe for someone who couldn't stand liver by sherlokin Paleo

[–]sherlok[S] 0 points1 point ago

I actually gave that a try. I grew up with full on cows liver (was a staple from my dads childhood) and it was just too much for me.

A little bit wasn't too bad, but eating a normal 'meat serving' amount would just overwhelm me.

Best Practices for User Notification and JDBC Connection Loss? by sherlokin java

I responded to the post you commented on here: http://www.reddit.com/r/java/comments/tt6za/best_practices_for_user_notification_and_jdbc/c4pmjpz

Just in case you had any more insight as to the specifics. Regardless thanks for the reply.

Best Practices for User Notification and JDBC Connection Loss? by sherlokin java

[–]sherlok[S] 0 points1 point ago

Yea that definitely seemed like the right way to do things.

So my only issue with it (and hence the question) would be that for the most part the upper level components that receive the exception will handle it similarly. Essentially they'll allow the user to retry the operation or fail.

I imagine this will amount to a while loop attempting to do whatever needs to be done until it's successful, if there's an exception we prompt the user and retry (loop) if they want, otherwise we exit.

This makes for a good deal of duplicated code throughout the program, or some sort of complex Runnable/anonymous inner class usage to try to generalize it (remember that this is any operation within the gui, so I need to be able to wrap any operation in this while/try/catch loop).

I can sense that it's getting complicated, here's a pastebin with some sample code: http://pastebin.com/LYrASCLn . Looking at it, I get an off feeling, which makes me think I'm going about this whole process wrong.

It's just not something I've seen around I guess. Java callbacks require defining an interface (assuming you want to pass parameters). Not supporting was a poor choice of words, it just doesn't seem to flow with java's overall design. I could definitely be missing something here.

I'm starting back up after 5 years and i'm looking for a new gun. $300 tops used ok. Suggestion? (first post ever :D) by Goobers515in paintball

[–]sherlok 0 points1 point ago

Just wondering if you've gotten any closer toy our final decision?

I'm in the exact same boat as you. It's mind blowing seeing Angel's, Shockers, Timmies and DM6/7's in my budget along with tons of new guns that I don't know much about at all (Axe, XTacy, etc).

Still gotta get a new pack tank and hopper too. Bleh.

All in jest of course. I'd just like to be able to enjoy a healthy food without having to hide it. I guess arguably pate is hiding it in butter and something acidic, but it is a classic way to serve liver.

Gave this recipe a shot this past week and it was fantastic. I've been struggling to find a way to get liver into my diet. Cooking it with bacon/onions seemed the most popular way, but I just couldn't get passed the mineraly-ness of it. Up to this point I'd been mixing it with ground meat, but that's kind of a cop out.

Enter the above recipe. I followed it pretty much to the T and it came out fantastic. It's got a flavor similar to liverwurst with only a very light irony after-taste. I've been having a little for lunch each day with a plate of cut up vegetables and some local sausage.

I did substitute a nice balsamic vinegar for red wine (didn't have any) and I think that's really what did it for me. It's got that balsamic sweetness and buttery richness with the liver in the background.

Fantastic and highly recommended.

Actually my coolant resevoir was pretty low, however that could've just been from neglect. Power steering fluid seemed to by pretty good, I'll take another look. I did notice some liquid under the car last week, I just remember noting that it wasn't oil. I'll have to take another look when I leave work today.

Having a hard time finding literature on removing belts. They don't just pull off, right? Aren't there tensioners involved? Is there a rule of thumb for starting the engine without belts? Are certain ones required, or will it run fine with no belts?

How simple is removing the belts? I'm assuming they don't just pull off, correct?

2nd half of my question. by OKC_Snakein paintball

[–]sherlok 0 points1 point ago

Yea I think some changes are definitely in order for the way things currently are. Prices seemed to have dropped a little since I last played (2006) which is good, but it's still a relatively expensive sport. The more we can cut out the unnecessary the better it is for everyone.

2nd half of my question. by OKC_Snakein paintball

[–]sherlok 2 points3 points ago

Definitely an interesting idea. I didn't want to rush it or anything, but a lot of ideas sound great when they're general and hand-wavey. If you can break stuff down to specifics, then you really start to see how good it is.

I'm curious as to how the numbers work out. What if everyone becomes a member? Then you essentially become an almost pre-paid establishment. Interesting (Thinking out loud).

I'm assuming you'll have some sort of age restriction?

I know a field near me (and I'm sure many others) lets you purchase season passes. This sounds almost like a super-privileged season pass, which is incredibly appealing.

Honestly, I'd totally do something similar to what you explained above. It sounds worthwhile for me, sounds like you build a solid community for the field which will not only attract (and retain) new players, but keep the field top quality.

And worst case scenario, no one joins and you have a normal field.

[–]sherlok 1 point2 points ago

Can you go into any more detail?

Say I'm into the idea, I give you the X dollar yearly fee. What do I get? What do I have to do?

What am I paying out of pocket for a day of play? Same as everyone else? Less? Are there special events? What if I can't show up when I'm supposed to? What if I never show up (or take a long vacation).

What kind of authority do I get at the field?

It sounds good to me, but I can't tell if it's because it's different or if I actually like the idea, need more details.
