Mayor McGinn convenes startup roundtable: Could these 5 ideas transform Seattle’s startup community? by shemp420in Seattle

non-tech start-ups

Guilty! Good point... I never even thought once of non-tech the entire time reading this.

50-100 mile round-trip, camp half0-way by devlinrosein Seattle

[–]shemp420 1 point2 points ago

Yes, I have personal experience camping and recreating at all of those places.

Although I am not sure about the logistics of getting from the Amtrack station to a camping location in the Chuckanuts (Larrabee or Bayview) without an auto... Bike with racks and bags would work. The bike slots on Amtrack do get reserved and fill up, so check on that.

Whidbey, Camano, Kitsap, Mountain Loop, Chuckanuts, Baker Lake. San Juan's themselves can be a bit of a hassle and extra expense (time and money) with the ferry. I would personally save that for the edges of the off season (lower rates, less people).

Maybe one of the brewery bars. They are not trendy, but reliable.

Best Android Tablet? by SmoothTalkin Android

[–]shemp420 1 point2 points ago

The acer's are a heck of a value and are well equipped with ports. Many like to mention that the asus is thinner and build quality feels better. But it doesn't matter at all once the tablet is in a case. The other benefit of the asus is the physical keyboard, dock, and extra battery. Length of battery has not been an issue with my tablet usage (a500). The physical keyboard can be accomplished on the acer for less $ other ways.

Nearly 40 percent of Puget Sound homeowners are underwater on their mortgages by russ_walkerin Seattle

One of the comments posted below the article is just delicious:

"This article means NOTHING and has no weight to it. When a buyer purchased the house, that buyer had a JOB and a commitment to pay the bank. That has not changed despite what the value of the house is. It's like buying a brand new car, most car will not worth of much less one year into the purchase of a new car. But we all have to respect the contract we all sign. We are only underwater if we our employer pay us less than what we made when we sign that agreement to purchase the house. Please stop printing this articles because it means NOTHING. People makes mistakes, and we all have to MAN UP our mistake and fix it."

That little wooden box standing towards the lower left is a community book sharing box. I have never used it, but there it is. http://myedmondsnews.com/2012/04/waterfront-coffee-owners-talk-about-their-little-free-library/

Long coal train through town - 106 cars! by ktvplumbsin Edmonds

[–]shemp420 1 point2 points ago

Whether it's coal or something else, these tracks are going to get busier and busier. I am not all for the increased coal mining, but rail is a better shipping method than clogging I-5 with less efficient semi trucks. It is too bad it's along the waterfront, but that is grandfathered legacy and won't change.

Nice capture

Just in time for the long weekend, gas prices could rise as much as .35 / gallon. by ktvplumbsin Seattle

[–]shemp420 2 points3 points ago

I read that article twice in disbelief that they didn't mention this. They came close: "due to tight supplies that are boosting prices" It seems wrong for the reporter to get people riled up on such a touchy subject without reporting on the well documented specifics.

Seattle pilot program could mean brown grass at city parks by shemp420in Seattle

Our grass starts growing in February and then goes dormant/brown quickly between July and late September. Once it starts back up it grows well into November.

Critics asking SPD to back off jaywalking tickets by shemp420in Seattle

[–]shemp420[S] -2 points-1 points ago

99.999999% of the time drivers are able to speed without getting a ticket. Not all laws can be enforced at all times for every infraction. Due to bandwidth, discretion needs to applied. It's nice to see SPD is re prioritizing on the jaywalking tickets.

The non-native argument becomes more worthless every day. Many non natives have lived in the Seattle area for longer than the entire life of some "natives". Seattle is a city of imports. The culture is continually evolving with the influx of population from elsewhere.
